MDT's process is gone after first reboot

Hi all,

We use MDT 2012.

Recently we decided to customize the Image/Capture file that is installed on the computers at the company.

We have a computer that we performed a capture of it, we did no changes on it, other than Windows 7 updates and editing the Default user (wallpaper, homepage, desktop icons etc.)

Until the last capture we made, everything worked fine.

We tried to capture a new image using the old Task Sequence of capturing with no success, every time we received error messages (each time more and more).

The same problem also appeared when we tried to create a new Task Sequence of capturing and left the default settings of it.

Then we created a new Task Sequence with no Sysprep (http://oi41.tinypic.com/348qeis.jpg).

The capture seem to be working properly. We updated the .wim file in the Task Sequnce of the deployment, the came a new problem:

After deploying OS (By the way, the installation of the OS is correct, but without applications or "Finish" screen), the computer reboots and reach the login screen without a trace of the deployment process.

Even when we took a new capture of computer that is configured to "automatically login", after deployment, the computer reach the desktop screen without a trace of the deployment process.

PLEASE HELP!

MDT 2012 hangs at Preparing disk 0 partitions

Howdy!

Trying to push an image to an Asus P9X79 using MDT 2012 (working fine for all other machines/motherboards) and after I click Finish to start the image, it will hang at "Preparing disk 0 partitions" and just sit there.  No error pops up and it doesn't progress past this.  Hard drives are configured as RAID 1 and have tried breaking and recreating RAID as well as formatting and un-partitioning the HDD's.  Hoping someone has seen this before and can help out.  Thanks!

I am getting the message below when I try to deploy any image.  All my deploy tasks where working fine.  No changes where made, this issue just showed up out of nowhere.  I never edited the unattend.xml at all, everything is default.

Any suggestions?

Windows Could not parse or process unattend answer file[C:\windows\panther\unattend.xml for pass [specialize].  A component or setting specified in the answer file does not exist.

MDT2012 - Deploy image from USB?

I am currently using MDT to deploy images/applications (via bootable USB) from my deployment share.  Am I able to copy certain files directly to a USB stick and install that way?  with the MDT server down or not present?  I want to ship these USB sticks to branch offices and have them deploy the images (not across the WAN, but locally).

Windows Server 2003 SP2 Refresh throws this error message: BDDRun.exe - Entry Point Not found

Full error:

The procedure entry point DecodePointer could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll

This happens as soon as the OS has been installed and we enter the Operating System for the first time.

Not sure how I can get around this - after hitting "OK" - the refresh resumes as normal.

Any ideas?

Black Screen when booting from Linux PXE

Hi all,

I'm experiencing a strange problem:

when I try to boot my MDT 2012 ISO image from Linux PXE, I get a black screen after the image is loaded to memdisk on VMware workstation and "older" laptops (Lenovo T410s, W500, ...).

On newer models (T430s, W530, ...) it works properly.

Any ideas?

best regards,

MDT2012 Local Backup WIM Deleted

$

Hi all,

We're having some problems with the 'Computer Backup' process in MDT - when we start a build from within the OS (REFRESH) we sometimes need to create a local backup WIM of the existing client before rebuilding - in this situation we don't want or need to backup/restore any 'user data' we just want an image of C: just in case, we would like to store it locally on the PC rather than taking up space on a network share…

When starting MDT from inside the OS we select the following:

  • Where to save your data and settings = Do not save data and settings
  • Specify where to save a complete computer backup = Automatically determine the location (allow the backup to be stored locally)

The PC starts the build process, boots to WINPE and uses ImageX to create the WIM locally on the PC (as we want...) When the task sequence has completed the WIM file created has been deleted - I’ve done a full search for *.WIM and it no longer exists!

I suspected it was something I’ve done so i created a new Out-Of-Box deployment share with no changes to customsettings.ini or bootstrap.ini, imported my OS and created a new Standard Client Task Sequence again with no changes, i tested the process again using the same answers as above and got the same results (the WIM file was created and then deleted - i did another search for *.WIM too... just to make sure)

Help!

Thanks

Richard

LiteTouchPE x86 - stuck on "Windows is loading files"

Hi guys,

We have a bunch of PCs that our Windows 7 LiteTouchPE x86 (we're using MDT 2010) image won't deploy to. We have fewer PCs, and some random laptops, that it will work on though (and it works fine - running through the entire process without a hitch).

I know there's already a lot of topics about this issue, and I've looked at many of them, but I can't seem to narrow anything down (I've spent the better part of yesterday looking solely into this issue), so I've come here with a new thread to get some fresh advice before I spend too much of today scouring the Internet without anything to show for it.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I am running LiteTouch.vbs manually to join the workgroup machine to the domain but I get an Wizard error. Currently machine is in workgroup and logged in as administrator. I have deploy media on USB drive (no network share)

Wizard Error

You must be running with Administrator rights. The deployment cannot proceed.

Login prompt customization

Good morning everyone.  Hopefully I can explain this with enough clarity that someone will understand my issue and steer me toward a solutionJ

When I prepare an image for capture, I have it set to not require CTRL+ALT+DEL so that when it boots, it boots up directly to the Administrator login, only asking for a password, not a username.  I can reboot the machine several times and it boots directly to the Administrator username and I just have to type a password.

However, once I sysprep and capture the image, that configuration doesn’t seem to stick.  After using the captured image to deploy a machine, it completes the deployment successfullly, but subsequent boots require CTRL+ALT+DEL and I have to type in the Administrator username as well as the password.

I have verified the Autologon section of the unattend.xml file contains the appropriate username and password, but I don’t think this section manages the particular setting that I’m looking for.  If anyone has a suggestion, I’d be eternally grateful!

MDT 2012 - LiteTouch Installation, exclude specific Windows Update forever

$

Dear community

I've successfully deployed several Windows 7 clients during the last week. Now my company wants to exclude some updates, for example the Microsoft Security Essentials (KB2805304) and of course the very annoying browser choice update (KB976002).

We use our WSUS server to install as many updates as possible. At the end of the deployment, we turn off the WSUS update for these clients because they won't be in our LAN anymore, that's why we have to turn on the Microsoft Updates.

I've been trying to exclude these updates using the specific setting in the CustomSettings.ini file:
[Default]
WUMU_ExcludeKB001=2805304
WUMU_ExcludeKB002=976002
But this seems to work with WSUS only. At the end, when we remove the WSUS settings from the registry and apply the Microsoft Update service, those updates appear again.

I've tried to hide them using the following VBS script:
Dim hideupdates(1)
hideupdates(0) = "KB976002"
hideupdates(1) = "KB2805304"

set updateSession = createObject("Microsoft.Update.Session")
set updateSearcher = updateSession.CreateupdateSearcher()

Set searchResult = updateSearcher.Search("IsInstalled=0")

For i = 0 To searchResult.Updates.Count-1
	set update = searchResult.Updates.Item(i)
	For j = LBound(hideupdates) To UBound(hideupdates)
		if instr(1, update.Title, hideupdates(j), vbTextCompare) = 0 then
	  		'Wscript.echo "No match found for " & hideupdates(j)
		else
			Wscript.echo "Hiding " & hideupdates(j)
			update.IsHidden = True
		end if
	Next
Next

This script works like a charm if I run it AFTER the deployment. If I run it DURING the deployment (at the end of it), it seems like the deployment wizard reverts the changes I made (I think because the wizard wants to revert the WUMU_Exclude part).
Quite strange, but I still hope for a solution. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards
Makorus

When to install the Applications

$

Hi,

I'm getting my head around MDT 2012 as I have 100 new workstations to install for our users.

I have successfully installed Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, joined our domain, installed Office 2010 and have created silent installs for our business applications, all of which install via the TS.

I have realised that I can not sysprep and capture an image if the workstation is on the domain, so that made me think of when to install the Applications.

Is it best to install Windows with required features, patch then sysprep and capture.  Then install the applications via the TS when deploying the custom image?

Or

Install as much as many Applications as possible with the reference PC in a Workgroup and then sysprep and capture?

How do you guys do it?

Thanks

Deploy OS on server with multiple volumes fails to boot to OS after reboot

$

When using a standard server tasksequence template there's only one Format and Partition Disk in the New Computer Only section (for disk with index 0). When I deploy an OS to a server that has multiple volumes (a VM with two disks or a server with two logical volumes) the server won't boot to the OS after a reboot, even though the OS was deployed succesfully and an active partition was created. Apparently after the reboot the server tries to boot from disk 1. This disk is not formatted so the server will PXE boot.

I guess I could create extra Format and Partition Disk task sequence items for extra disks but that will probably result in warnings/errors deploying to a single volume server. I could add an IF statement to the steps but there's no OSDDiskCount variable (that I know of) like there is for OSDAdapters. I guess I can use a WMI query to check if a disk/volume exists so I'll get this up and running eventually but mostly I would just like to know why this behaviour occurs. Why does the server try to boot from the unformatted volume instead of using the active partition?

Greetings & salutations,

MicaH
