Cannot Edit Unattend.xml File

$

Hi,

I am trying to set the CopyProfile option true for my deployment task sequence. Doing so involves editing the unattend.xml file. Each time I try to do so from the task's properties, it gets stuck building the catalog file, which never completes. The process hangs and I have to forcibly quit out of it, resulting in an "Unable to edit unattend.xml file" error message. Why does this happen? For this task in particular, I imported the WIM along with a full set of installation files. That didn't seem to bring the catalog file over with it. Wha causes this, and how can I properly edit the unattend.xml file from the properties dialog. Right now, I just go in and edit the unattend.xml file directly, but I am sure there is a better way to be doing it. If I try to open the tasks's unattend file with WSIM, I get the catalog error stating there is no catalog file associated. When I try to use the target WIM to create the catalog file I get a "Unknown error (0xc1420127)." What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance

Windows Logon Message stops MDT

We have a Windows Logon Message across our network. Users see the message before they can logon.

However this is causing problems as it is stoping the MDT process. The image is installed, PC reboots but then the message appears. When you click OK, MDT continues and works perfectly.

IS there anyway around this?

MDT 2013 Update 1 Preview - Windows ADK RC for Windows 10 available

MDT 2012 - U1 on Win8: "Please install PowerShell..."

I built a new Windows 8 machine and then installed MDT 2012-U1 and the Windows 8 ADK.  All of these are the final RTM releases and not betas or release candidates.

When I start MDT I get the error:

“Initialization Error PowerShell is required to use the Deployment Workbench.  Please install PowerShell then relaunch Deployment Workbench.”

I've tried reinstalling MDT and uninstalling the ADK but I still get the error.

I've uninstalled both and then installed just MDT by itself but still get the error.

UEFI - Black screen with cursor

I'm attempting to image a Lenovo Twist S230u

Server 2013 with MDT 2013 - tested the image on a VM with no issues.. My environment is very simple - PXE with only a 64bit boot image

Windows 8.1 and the laptop has UEFI as well as legacy...  Which ever option I choose, it goes past the new blue server logo, and then sits there with a mouse cursor - I've let it sit for 30 mins with nothing changed - no keystrokes bring up anything either (shift + F8)

This computer has a mSSD as well as a spindle drive and the issue is persistent on both of them so I'm thinking it has to do with the BIOS

I've done research but I'm not seeing any definite answer that a new Task Sequence will need to be created for this

My deployment share has no drivers pre installed besides the NIC drivers for each model.

This deployment share has been running without issues for several months now.

Any help or guidance would be fantastic.

Hi,

I have created a USB media in MDT and generated an image. I used Microsoft USB/DVD tool to burn the ISO to the USB stick.

I have done this in the past successfully but this time all i get when i boot a new laptop is: "Error loading operating system"

Not sure what to do with that, could that be a driver issue?

Installing Applications Only With MDT 2013

I've been trying to create a task sequence to deploy applications only and I couldn't, although I created a standard  sequence that deploys windows 8.1 and then install the applications.

I trier to create a custom task sequence to install only applications and it comes with an error says "sequence has been suspended this can't be preformed on windows PE", so I created a standard task sequence and disabled the install group and the "new computer only" group so I could skip the formatting and installing windows part, the sequence goes well and then the client restarts to get on the desk top and install the applications like it should in the normal sequence but nothing happens the client is up ,there is no application and in the monitoring feature it says running and it's 69% complete.

I need to find a way to install applications with MDT with Zero Touch that actually works.

 Please Help A.S.A.P

Once the MDT build has been completed the 'System' E drive remains.

This has the boot image for MDT with the 'sources' folder and bootmgr file.

Litetouch deployment failed, Return Code = -2147467259 0x80004005

Hi I am currently part of a team deploying windows 7 to lenovo laptops. We are experiencing issues with deploying to a specific model the T410i laptop. A pink screen appears saying Operating system deployment did not complete successfully. 11 errors and 3 warnings were reported. We are using a desktop PC with windows 7 as a deployment server as it needs to be portable for use at satellite sites.

The odd thing is this doesn't effect all T410i laptops many build without an issue. At our most recent rollout we found 17 machines refused to take the image. So far we cannot image these machines. I believe one engineer said they had had sucess by removing the DVD drive and battery but haven't tested this yet I'm about to. We have tried the following.

1. Clean with diskpart and retry - no effect

2. Different SSD - no effect

3. Different deployment server - no effect.

4. Memory sticks instead of CD's - helps with some machines but not these 17

This is a sample of the BDD.log from the machine in question. Does anyone have any ideas? This is a little over my head if I'm honest.

NVidia drivers and MDT

Hello everyone,

I am trying to learn the basics of MDT in order phase out Acronis in our production envirment. The 1,000 foot overview of our setup here is that we are regularly building different desktops and laptops that fall in to a few different hardware and software configurations. All of these systems have to be heavily hardened for information assuarnce purposes.

My hope is to eventually get a system in place where we can build a base image that includes all of our hardening processes and then apply different packs of drivers and software on top of that base image. It sounds like I can do this through MDT but my most basic of tests failed.

I set up a computer for MDT and built task deployment. I used the install.wim from an OEM Windows 7 CD and downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers (which come in the form of an EXE.) I unpacked the drivers and added everything from that unpack folder to the driver list, created the task, and burned a deployment DVD (We don't have a server to deploy over the network.) Windows installed fine but the video card defauled back to standard VGA. I double checked and I did have drivers enabled.

Is there anything obvious or basic that I am missing?

Installing MDT & ADK

Hello,

I've installed MDT 2013 and Windows ADK 8.1, but when I attempt to create a new deployment share I get an error prompt stating ADK is not present and to install Windows 8.1 ADK.  Any idea as to why this is occurring when both are installed on a Windows 7 system?

Thanks!

MDT Windows 7 Updates- WSUSOffline is slow, WSUServer faster???

$

Currently I am running Server 2012 and MDT to deploy OEM images to various models, complete with Recovery images and some 62 Windows 7 updates included. I used WSUSOffline to acquire the updates and add them into my task sequence using MDT and the appropriate package and unattend.xml settings. Everything works essentially, but SLOW. it takes 20-28 minutes to apply the Unattend file after initial format and install.

My question is: Would it be faster to set up WSUS as a Role and distribute them that way? Or would the speed be the same? I will be using this server offline after the initial update scrounging, so the prospect of keeping up images with updates is moot.

MDT 2013 Application Error: Path to file not found

Hi,

Looking to get some help on this error I get on one of my applications.

Here is the scenario:

- I imported the application selecting Application with source files

- I browsed to the source directory and after entering description about the application I entered setup.exe as the command to run

- During the installation setup.exe needs to read information from setup.xml which is in the same source directory.

- But I get error that setup.xml cannot be found. Cant find the config xml file \\server+fqdn\share\applications\applicationdirectory\\\server+fqdn\share\applications\applicationdirectory\setup.xml

Why is it looking for it in that path? Why is it repeating and putting 3 back slashes in between?

Thank you so much whoever can point me in the right direction on this.

Trouble Capturing A New Image

$

Hello all! I'm in the process of creating a new image and after countless hours of research, tutorials and reading, I'm STILL stuck and looking for answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've created a golden image with all of the updates and everything that I want installed. I then create a sysprep and capture task sequence. Once the task sequence was created, I update the deployment share. In the "rules" tab of my deployment share, I make sure that "SkipCapture=NO".

On the target machine, I run the LiteTouch.vbs. Once I run the LiteTouch.vbs file, I get prompted to select the task sequence I want to run. I choose the Sysprep and Capture sequence that I just created and hit next. This is where I'm stuck.

All of my research says that I should then be prompted to select "Capture an image of this reference computer"; this is where I chose the name of the file and where it should be saved. This does not happen. My target virtual machine simply reboots and the process ends. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong? Do I need to make more edits to the rules for the deployment share? Should I alter the properties of the task sequence? I'm stomped and not seeing why my capture is failing.

MDT completion screen appears in middle of imaging?

Hi.

I'm used to seeing the completion screen (MDT wizard?) pop up at the end of a deployment, telling me the deployment completed successfully with zero errors, or if there are some what they are, etc.

I'm using a newly captured WIM file and now all of the sudden that screen appears (tellimg me it's finished and there are zero errors) right after the image is laid down and I'm still in WinPE.  I click Finish and it reboots, returns to an Installing Windows screen like I've already run sat through in WinPE, then reboots again after a few more minutes of procesing, then Windows loads up but there are no drivers and says it needs to reboot again.  I click to reboot, and it comes up, drivers and all, and everything so far seems to be fine.

Anyone know why it would be doing this, instead of giving me that completion screen at the end of the deployment?  I can live with this but I'm not comfortable with it...

MDT 2013 U1 - Bad credentials

So I updated my MDT 2013 inplace with U1 to test Windows 10

everything seems to go through fine until I boot the PXE
didn't connect for the longest time and then it said the credentials are bad.  Odd because it was just working.  tried to map the drive, no luck.

Created a new deployment share just for Win10 and left the customsettings and bootstrap.ini default so I would get the prompt for username, password, domain.  I've had this share running for sometime and when I try a net use I get System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found.

Even when I try to map a physical machine, I get the same.. All of this is running in VMware Workstation.  I can ping the machines and get successful pings

Is this a drive problem or something to do with MDT.

Any suggestions.

Microsoft OEM licensing - Downgradable Option

Hi There,

Please provide a response to the following queries,

  1. Can we downgrade OEM desktop operating system licenses? (For instance Windows 7 Ultimate/Professional to Windows XP Professional)
  2. If yes, can we downgrade the OEM desktop OS with a genuine previously licensed OS from another OEM machine (For instance, downgrading a Windows 7 Professional OEM machine with a Windows XP Professional OS using the media/key from another Windows XP OEM machine)
  3.  If yes, is there a  defined process/procedure for downgrading the OEM desktop OS licenses with another OEM OS license?

Thank you in advance

Cheers

MDT 2013 - VLAN Tagging at beginning of Deployment?

$

I leave the BDD Welcome screen enabled for our server deployments, so deployment techs can leverage adding static IP Addresses prior to connecting to the deployment server.

Is there a way to add a VLAN tag on the NIC, too?

I tried adding PowerShell to WinPE, but there doesn't appear to be any networking components to it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!
