MDT's process is gone after first reboot

$

Hi all,

We use MDT 2012.

Recently we decided to customize the Image/Capture file that is installed on the computers at the company.

We have a computer that we performed a capture of it, we did no changes on it, other than Windows 7 updates and editing the Default user (wallpaper, homepage, desktop icons etc.)

Until the last capture we made, everything worked fine.

We tried to capture a new image using the old Task Sequence of capturing with no success, every time we received error messages (each time more and more).

The same problem also appeared when we tried to create a new Task Sequence of capturing and left the default settings of it.

Then we created a new Task Sequence with no Sysprep (http://oi41.tinypic.com/348qeis.jpg).

The capture seem to be working properly. We updated the .wim file in the Task Sequnce of the deployment, the came a new problem:

After deploying OS (By the way, the installation of the OS is correct, but without applications or "Finish" screen), the computer reboots and reach the login screen without a trace of the deployment process.

Even when we took a new capture of computer that is configured to "automatically login", after deployment, the computer reach the desktop screen without a trace of the deployment process.

PLEASE HELP!

"ignoring extended attributes" by capturing Windows 8

Hello,

when doing a capture from windows 8 ..this will take a LONG time ( 45 minutes).

In the bdd.log these lines are added (and will cause the long time).

What to do to fix this?

single custom image vs multiplule custom image

hi,

I am looking for some points that could help in deciding single custom image over multiple custom image in MDT2012.

We have 2 set of users with some common applications and few have different applications.

I have a choice to either go with 1 custom image with single TS (put hardware logic to differentiate the end user in TS during App deployment) or with mutipule custom image with multiple TS for each class of end users.

Few points I can think of keeping one custom image with 1 TS are

 - Storage- Save storage since we have 1 image

- Management - Easy to manage 1 image if we think for image management lifecycle

Need some more pointers\good articl as deciding factors to choose between single vs multiple custom image.

A connection to the deployment share cannot be made. Connection OK. Possible cause: Invalid Credentials.

I'm hoping that someone out there can help me resolve this problem that I am having. I have worked on this for several days now, tring almost anything that I could find in the posts here as well as any other message board.

The problem is this: I am trying to do a PC refresh of an existing XP machine to Windows 7 using the MDT 2010 Update 1 toolkit. I have imported a base OS into the workbench, added applications to the workbench, added out of box drivers, and created a task sequence. I then updated the deployment share.

On the XP machine that I want to "refresh", I have started the LiteTouch.vbs script and it runs through completion in the XP environment. It captures the user state (I opened up Windows explorer and could see files being created under the MiniNT folder of the users profiles) and completes that process and reboots.

Here is where the problem starts. After rebooting and "starting Windows 7", upon getting to the flashy "Microsoft | Solution Accelerators" screen I get a popup error stating "Connection to deployment share (\\servername\DeploymentShare$) cannot be made. Connection OK. Possible cause: Invalid credentials." Then you get three options to Ignore, Abort, Cancel. I believe that the "Ignore" and "Abort" options will put you out into a command window.

So when in that window, I have tried various things to see if I have connectivity as well as the IP settings (just to make sure that I am really communicating on the network). An IPCONFIG/ALL shows that I have indeed pulled a valid IP address from the DHCP server and a ping of the server IP does result in returned traffic. Even a ping by servername returns packets, so it's not a communication problem.

When trying to do a net view servername it returns an "System error 5 occurred Access denied". I don't understand why this is happening since I have the DeploymentShare shared out using the default when the installation created the share "Everyone/Full control" share permissions and the NTFS permissions are "Users, Read, Execute, List, and Special Perm's Create files and folders". The account that I used initially to connect to the share worked just fine as it downloaded all the files to the "refresh" machine without any issues. I even tried creating a local user on the MDT 2010 server and using that account and still no luck.

So if the account that you intially tell MDT 2010 to use to connect to the network shares is ok and working fine, what account is it using to complete this process when it boots into the Windows 7 installation?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me nuts!

Thanks in advance to your suggestions and responses.

DISM Error:5 error when building boot ISO with WADK 8 and MDT 2012 sp1

Hi

Environment: Windows server 2008 R2(VM), 2GB RAM, WADK 8, MDT 2012 SP1

When I try to build a boot ISO using either MDT or ImageX, I receive an error when DISM is used to add packages.

Processing 1 of 1 - Adding package WinPE-HTA-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.2.9200.16384
An error occurred - WinPE-HTA-Package Error: 0x80070005

Error: 5

Access is denied.

This repeats for all WINPE packages being added by DISM.

I have rebuilt the server and reinstalled but the same affect. I have tried running it as admin, editing rights and making the name of the packages lower case but cannot seem to get anywhere. Any help would be great.

How to enable the Defender app inside the DaRT tool?

I'm pretty new to MDT so please go easy on me :-)

We're running MDT 2012 and I'm trying to figure out how to enable/turn on the Defender application inside the DaRT tool? Maybe possibly even add another source of AntiVirus application to replace Defender.

MDT not displaying all Task Sequences

We have MDT TS's for Windows 8 x32 and x64 deployed. We are using the 32bit boot wim. We are only seeing the 32bit TS's, none of the x64 ones. Is this normal? Does it check the processor and only display what can be deployed? Is there a setting we can change to display all TSs? We are running MDT 2012 Update 1.

I have posted my question here as well:

HP softpaq not installing all drivers?

Hello all.

I am using MDT 2012.  Lately i have noticed something a little odd.  When i check my device manager it shows me that some drivers are missing.

Here is how i have this setup.

I have each driverpack (downloaded from HP) setup as a separate selectable application which is installed via task sequence.

for example depending what model system im deploying i have it where i can select the corresponding driverpack that matches.  Lately when the deployment completes i have to manually go into the device manager and manually update the drivers.  once i point the missing driver to its instal location (c:/swsetup/whatever the driverpack is called) the missing drivers install without issue.

My question is why does this not install automatically?  is there a better way to do this?

thanks for all input.

Win7 + IE10 Slipstream error

I am trying to install a test image with IE10 slipstreamed in and getting an error "Windows could not parse or process unattend answer file [C:\windows\Panther\unattend.xml] for pass [specialize]. A component or setting specified in the answer file does not exist."  I used an original Win7 Ent SP1 image + IE10 and then imported full source as if from original DVD / ISO.  Then created a new sequence and problem still occurs.

I think it is being caused by:

<component name="Microsoft-Windows-IE-InternetExplorer" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
  <IEWelcomeMsg>false</IEWelcomeMsg>
</component>

Which I am not sure is a setting I set in MDT setup or a default setting?  This setting has been removed from IE10.

Dual Boot Macs Fail SMS Task Sequencer after upgrading to MDT2012

I have upgraded from MDT 2010 to MDT 2012.  After the upgrade, the PC's continue to work fine, the tools folder exists, and the install of applications occurs without a hitch.  The Dual Boot Macs are a completley different story though.  The install goes fine, but the Tools folder does NOT get copied to the machine and the computer errors out after the install of Windows during it's first boot into Windows when it logs in.

Here are the errors in LiteTouch.Log

Unable to generate LiteTouchMedia.iso file in MDT 2012

Hello,

I'm creating offline Media in MDT 2012. It is creating the "content" folder, but it is not creating the "LiteTouchMedia.iso" file. Once it's created the content folder folder, the Media creation wizard shows "process completed successfully" and no more progress to create the iso file.

I have created a separate deployment share for deployment, which contains only the captured wim file, some model drivers and standard client task sequence for deployment. I did search for log files to identify the issue, but i couldn't get any log files particularly for Media creation.

Can anyone help me on this issue?.

Thanks in Advance.

DFS Replication cause MDT to go in read only mode

Hi all

I would like to ask others if they are using DFS Replication of their deployment share to move to several sites, and if you find your deployment share wont update because something sets it to read-only mode?

what exactly set this to read-only? What are you doing to get around the problem?

DomainJoin based on Location and ComputerType

$

Hi there,

Currently I'm developing a new environment where the requirement is to Join objects to the domain based on Location and ComputerType.

My MDT environment is connected to a database and I would like to approach this step as flexible and manageble as possible, so I'm overlooking my options here and possibly ask for advice from all of you MDT experts ;)

So currently I have 5 locations defined:
Country A
Country B
Country C
Country D
Country E

..which I can give each their own properties in the details:

DomainAdmin
DomainAdminDomain
DomainPassword
JoinDomain
MachineObjectOU

These properties will be set based on the matching Identity which is specified to be a specific gateway.

Or I could specify these values to each separate computer by doing a mass-import in the SQL Database, this would be my last resort because that isn't really flexible and manageble either

Or I can resolve this in my CustomSettings.ini
For which I have now specified:

SkipDomainMembership=YES
NetworkLocation=Work
JoinDomain=CONTOSO.COM
DomainAdmin=
DomainAdminDomain=CONTOSO
DomainAdminPassword=

[ByType]
Subsection=Laptop-%IsLaptop%
Subsection=Desktop-%IsDesktop%
[Laptop-True]
MachineObjectOU = "OU = CountryA,OU = Laptops,OU = CONTOSO,DC = CONTOSO,DC = COM"
[Desktop-True]
MachineObjectOU = "OU = CountryA,OU = Desktops,OU = CONTOSO,DC = CONTOSO,DC = COM"

Or I could incorporate 10 steps, two steps per country which call a script with each different property's when it comes to Location and ComputerType and put conditions on these steps.

So who's got a bright idea?

Windows Image System Manager

I've got two questions about sysprepping an unattended install for Win2k8 R2.  TIA to anyone who can answer one or both questions!

1.  I've read the definition of each config passes however I'm still confused.  There are config options, such as "...-Windows-International-Core_6.1...neutral",  which can be added to multiple config passes.  If we take a look at the aforementioned config, it can be added either to the specialize or to the oobe pass.  What's the difference?  Why would I added to one or the other?

2.  I see we can configure whether Windows will get its network info from DHCP or not.  Would it be possible to tell Windows to get an IP from DHCP while still being able to statically specify DNS servers through unattend.xml (i.e.: just pretend that no matter what, DNS server can't be served via DHCP)?

Thanks for your help!

Problem Upgrading Deployments From MDT 2010 (v5.1.1642.01) to MDT 2012 (v6.1.2373.0)

$

As the subject states, I am unable to upgrade deployments to the new version of Microsoft Deployment Workbench. I have many deployments that were created using the 5.x version. I recently upgraded to MDT 2012, version 6.x, and none of the deployments will open without upgrading them first. But I get the following message when it fails do upgrade:

Access to the path 'E:\Deployments\<name_of_deployment>\Deploy\USMT\x64\DlManifests\bitsextensions-server' is denied.

If I pull up properties of that folder, the Read Only check box is shaded. I can clear the check box and apply it to all sub-folders, but it just reapplies. When I pull properties back up the box is shaded again.

Does anyone know what causes this, and how I can resolve it?

Getting errors related to during unattend.

Hi All, I'm testing an unattended install of 2012 server core and I'm getting errors during package install. I looked at the autounattend file and under the sectioncpi:offlineImage, the value for cpi:source= is the path to the local install.wim that I'm using to build the file in Windows SIM and, of coarse, the installer is looking for that and can't find it.

Am I missing a step in Windows SIM; Am I supposed to click somewhere and the reference will be changed to the default location on the DVD?

Can I just remove the reference and the install will look in the location on the DVD, or am I supposed to add a reference myself?

Thanks again for your help.

Variable Deployment Share?

$

Hello everyone:

I'm preparing for a large MDT implementation where one of the scenarios is that we have to rebuild a branch server from a USB stick/USB hard drive.  That's fine for the base OS, but I'll have two VM's to build and will be booting from WinPE ISO images.

Right now, if I boot from ISO, I have to use the "DefaultGateway" variable.  Well, I'd just assume not code in 250+ default gateways.

Is there a way of prompting for a DeploymentShare before MDT initializes in WinPE?  Guessing it would have to be custom?

Thanks,

Greg
