Does anyone know how to make the windows update task sequence only do one pass? Or possibly be able to specify how many passes? Thank you

Failed to save environment to (80070057)

We use MDT to deploy Lenovo laptops. We have successfully deployed quite a few with Win 7. We built a new Server 2016, Installed the latest MDT and ADK. We successfully captured the image and are in the process of deployment. We are receiving the above error as well as:

Failed to save the current environment block. This is usually caused by a problem with the program.

Failed to persist execution state

Failed to save execution state and environment to local hard disk

These errors were taken from smsts log.

What's odd to me is that the model we are presently trying to deploy has been used before with Win 7 without a problem. I have read a multitude of posts on the web and none appear to work. Any assistance is appreciated.

MDT - Windows 10 imaging and initial default browsers

$

Hello!

I have been creating images for several years now and still have not found a suitable solution to changing the default browser for all new users from Edge to Internet Explorer.  Up until Windows 10 1803 this hasn't seemed to cause a pressing need to get this changed.  From what I have noticed, the Edge browser starting with 1803 causes issues with our state testing app.  There are several background services that start up and prevent the testing app to run.

I have tried to accomplish this 3 different ways.  I have applied a group policy that uses the xml file I exported from a computer I set all the defaults on.  I have used the same xml file and applied it in an MDT task sequence using the ZTIDefaultAssociations.wsf that copies the OEMDefaultAssociations.xml file to the system32 folder as well as writes the path in registry.  Both of these options have successfully changed the default browser to IE, but if you change the default to something else it is reverted back to IE every time you restart.

I have also tried using dism to load these defaults.

I need to get the default changed from Edge to Internet Explorer for every new user that logs into the computer, but allows the user to pick their own browser and have it stick.

After imaging, some pcs be it Dell or HP are showing inactive devices error. One cannot get into windows when the error pops up after image completion.  You can image the pcs 10 times and still the error. I have replaced the hard drive, <g class="gr_ gr_243 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="243" id="243">systemboard</g> and in some cases image. I do not know what to <g class="gr_ gr_467 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace" data-gr-id="467" id="467">do ?</g> Not sure what is causing it. Like I said it does not happen to all the pcs imaged.

Any help will be much appreciated

MDT captures 1809 W10 image, but 3 "Network Path Not Found" errors show in the summary

So I've recently been tasked with getting an MDT/WDS server online, as we're moving from a strictly WDS environment (2008 R2) to a 2016 Server install with WDS and MDT.  For the most part, things have gone well, except when it's come to capturing an image.

The long story short, is that I have the bootstrap.ini file configured to provide the username, domain, password, and deployshare information, which has worked well for the deployment aspect of deploying a Windows 10 Pro 1809 image for testing.  The issue comes, when I'm trying to CAPTURE an image.  The method that I'm using to capture an image is rather traditional - sysprep the image, power down, boot to network, choose the task sequence to capture an image, and then let it go.  I get no complaints through the entire process UNTIL it finishes, and reports 3 "Network Path not found" errors.  No error codes - just 3 messages saying the same thing ("Network path not found").  The image, however, seems to have been deposited on the "captured" directory within the deployshare.

Upon further investigation, I was advised to look further into the BDD.log, and the part that jumped out at me, was this:

My first thought, was that the NIC wasn't connecting to DHCP quickly enough, so I added in a command (wscript.sleep 60000) to have the script pause for a minute to give the machine time to establish a good connection, and that basically didn't have any effect.

I'm at a bit of a loss as I'm not sure what's going on.  The process itself seems to complete, however, those 3 "Network Path not found" errors seems to indicate that something couldn't find the share. So, I guess I have 2 questions.  1 - Being that the process completes, how concerned should I be that the captured WIM will have issues?      2 - How can I go about troubleshooting this error so that I can actually end up with a clean summary?  I'll post the entirety of the BDD.log file shortly.

Much appreciated.

pxe boot with WDS/MDT

Hi,

Recently I have deployed WDS and MDT on Windows Server 2012-R2, my DHCP is running on a separate server.

After the deployment of WDS and MDT and I am facing boot errors, I have requested network admin to add IP helper address as WDS IP in the router. Also, note that my client machine and WDS are on the network.

Anyone know how to deal with the following error message.

PXE-E79: NBP is too big to fit in free base memory

PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.

Need help imaging one SSD and not a storage drive.

I was given a pc today and I dropped an image on it. Everything to me looked fine as the C: was a whopping 984G.

What I later found out was that the pc also has a 512G solid state drive and that is where they want the OS to be (C:).

Every pc that runs through MDT gets one whole drive and the OS resides there, C:. I have no idea how to have MDT drop my image onto the smaller drive and leave the large one as storage (D: maybe?).

I'm thinking it must be in the partition section of MDT, yet then I'd have to have that step apply only to the Precision 7530 model.
How do I go about either configuring the BIOS so that C: and the OS is the 512G drive and the other is a storage drive? Would I also have to hard-code that drive as a letter?
I've never had this situation before and they're in a hurry for it, as usual.

I will add that I'm a logical thinker but I'm no scripter. I still need my one-drive pc's to remain as they are, just for two-drive pc's I need to format and deploy to the SSD and I guess format and letter-assign the larger storage drive as well.

How to run multicast and unicast deployments simultaneously?

$

If we have one tech imaging 10 systems via multicast and another person imaging a single system using a different task sequence, how can we allow the first person to use multicast and the second to use unicast without having to wait for the multicast to finish so he can uncheck the multicast box?

The only way I can think of is using a different deployment share, but then we would have to recreate all of our applications and task sequences from scratch on a new deployment share and they would get out of sync.

Is there a better solution?

Unable to multicast with DFS-R

We have set up DFS-R to deploy workstations from a remote site.

This works fine for unicast.

However, when I enable multicast, it tries multicasting from the wrong site site even though we have customsettings.ini and boot.ini set as DeployRoot=\\%WDSServer%\DeploymentShare$.  I look in the WDS properties and see mulicast running from the site that isn't local to the workstations

As a test, I tried hard coding the deployroot to the site local to the workstation we are working with and now multicast doesn't get triggered at all, yet it still runs incredible slowly.

Of course, the enable multicasting check box is enabled.

What else needs to be configured to make multicasting work along with DFS-R?

Migrate User Data From Windows 7 Windows 10 New Hardware?

$

We have been migrating one-off users to new Windows 10 workstations.  We already use MDT 2013 Update 2 do a Windows 10 OS deployment to the brand new PCs and then deliver the new box to the user's desks.  We then help them manually back up some of their most critical app settings and data from their old Windows 7 machines, copy the info to a network share (such as their redirected Documents folder and then restore the settings to their new Windows 10 machines.

Now we are ready to do a mass migration from Windows 7 to Windows and this hand holding will be way too labor intensive.  We need to be able to just swap the hardware and have everything ready to go so we can quickly move to the next user's machine.

We have never used the USMT tool, but we would like to start now.  We need to capture the user's data and custom app and profile settings from the old system, have it uploaded to a network share and have MDT capture this data and load it into the user's new profile on the replacement PC during  the task sequence.

We don't want to capture *everything* from their old systems because that will include junk such as Start Menu and taskbar shortcuts for apps that will not be installed on the new workstation and documents that don't need to be captured because they are already located in redirected folders.

This is what we need to capture:

Mapped printers

Office/Outlook 2010 settings, ribbon customizations,  email signatures, autocomplete, Rules etc..

User data stored in on their local disk's data partion (excluding pst and mp3 files).

Desktop wallpaper.

LOB application personalized settings located in the following locations:

1.  Named folders in the user's appdata directory.

2.  Registry keys related to these apps in the user's regsitry HKCU

3.  INI or other files used to store application customizations that may be located in specified paths in Windows or Program Files directories.

4.  OBDC settings in control panel

In general, we will want most Windows and application customizations brought from the old PC except links to apps not installed on the new PC and data stored in local folders we already have redirected to network shares.

We don't want the Start Menu programs (All Apps etc.) directories to have any references to applications from the old computer that are not installed on the new computer.  We also don't want shortcuts in the Taskbar brought over because they may either be broken links or redundant links.

Is this something we can set up in a OSD Task Sequence on short notice?

How is this done?

MDT can't update deployment share.

Hello there, i've been running into some issues with WDS + MDT.

First to clear some things off, everything is virtualized in ESX.

So what i am trying to do is simply updating the deployment share in MDT, which spits out errors no matter what.

I have litterally no idea what is causing this and google did not help me at all (not even page 2).

The errors are as following:

=== Making sure the deployment share has the latest x86 tools ===

=== Processing LiteTouchPE (x86) boot image ===

Building requested boot image profile.

System.Management.Automation.CmdletInvocationException: Unable to open the specified WIM file. ---> System.Exception: Unable to open the specified WIM file. ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The system cannot find the path specified

   at System.Management.Automation.Runspaces.PipelineBase.Invoke(IEnumerable input)
   at Microsoft.BDD.Wizards.UpdateProgress.WizardProcessing()
   at Microsoft.BDD.Wizards.WizardProgress.InitiateWizardProcessing()

It says it can't open the specified WIM file, and weirder is when i go to the properties of the deployment share and under the "General" tab it says the network UNC path is invalid but i do have the share listed in the server manager. Keep in mind that this is all a FRESH install of MDT. MDT is also installed with the latest version. The deployment server is runinng on windows server 2016 Datacenter. The WDS service is running just fine and i CAN pxe boot just fine, i can capture and deploy images. I just want to use MDT.

If this is something that has occured & solved before, i am sorry for taking your time.

All help is appreciated i will also try and share as much information that is needed.

Kind regards,

Quint

Server OS Storage Array Drivers

HP P408i Array with Server OS Storage Array Drivers injection.

Not for the PE, but for the OS.

Do those drivers have to be injected using DISM or can used native MDT functionality?

I think those must be injected after OS drop and before reboot?

Maybe you guys can share some links?

I am not able to find anything for some reason?

Thank you

MDT Error 5624 when attempting to install Custom WIM file

Good Afternoon,

I am reaching out because I feel like I am having tunnel vision here. Something just isn't right. Ive followed step by step guides on deploying a Custom WIM file. Used VMWare to build the machine in Audit Mode, captured the image by running the LiteTouch.vbs script, used a standard sysprep and capture sequence. Each and every time, this fails. HOWEVER, it i were to use a standard Win 1803 wim file, the operating system will be installed with the same task sequence that is failing. Which leads me to believe that there is something wrong with the capture.

Here is the capture sequence that is in place:

I am just asking for a second set of eyes. Maybe there is something small that I am missing.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Start Menu and Search not responding after Win 7 to 1809 MDT In-Place Upgrade

$

Hi and thanks for reading.

After running an MDT in-place upgrade on some machines, the Start Menu and Search (magnifying glass) don't respond when clicked.

  • It doesn't happen on every 7>10 IPU, but may be happening on all of them since 1809, not totally sure yet.
  • The original in-place upgrade task sequence has a few customizations, so I ran another in-place upgrade (after the machine had already been upgraded to 1809) with just the default in-place upgrade TS from MDT: same result
  • BDD.log is totally clean
  • Windows key does not open Start, nor do any keyboard shortcuts (Win key/ctrl+esc)
  • Right-clicking the Windows key successfully opens the "secret start menu), so does Win+x
  • Ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /[Check,Scan,Restore], none indicated any corruption
  • Ran sfc /scannow... "did not find any integrity violations"
  • Ran Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}... it looked successful on all of the AppX packages but there was one error, will provide if requested. Still same non-response from Start before reboot, same after.

In Event Viewer, every time I click Start, I get these 2 events. Clicking Search only gives me the top event:

MDT and WDS error

When trying to PXE boot a new HP ProDesk 600 G4, i receive an error that i am missing a driver. The missing driver is listed as: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_15BB&SUBSYS_83EF103C&REV_10. I believe I have setup the correct driver package from HP website on our deployment share.  I also Imported new WIN 10 1809 OS into MDT.  I saw what I thought was a resolve for this by updating WDS with the new image, but I am getting  lost on this part.  Even the what I can find instructions don't elaborate and I am so, so, behind in my work.  I am new to MDT and WDS.  I am using MDT 2012.  After I imported the new OS in MDT and updated the deployment share, I could PXE and image a HP ProDesk 600 g3 without any issues at all.  Now with the G4, I get the above message.  CAN SOMEONE AT MICROSOFT PLEASE HELP ME??? We are a volume MS business/education.

Passing parameters to LiteTouch.vbs causes Win10 update to fail

I've got a Windows 10 update Task Sequence.  We do not have SCCM and I'm wanting to automatically kick off the task sequence without remoting into machines we're deploying to.  I started out just trying to run "\\mdtserver\prod$\scripts\LiteTouch.vbs /TaskSequenceID:Win10x64Upg /SkipWizards:YES"  (including all the required data, not just what's shown here).  It didn't work, so then I created a newCustomSettings.ini file, CustomSettings-ZTWin10Upg.ini in the Control folder.  I called it using "\\mdtserver\prod$\scripts\LiteTouch.vbs /rulesfile:CustomSettings-ZTWin10Upg.ini".  I tried doing these both just by WinKey+R and typing in the path and using a batch file.

The CustomSettings-ZTWin10Upg.ini File:

It again did not work.  What is happening is my TS kicks off, runs the update, goes all the way through installing Windows 10.  At the end it tries to log in and fails (wrong password for some reason) and then if I log in as the Administrator on the machine, it pops up like it's trying to start the task sequence over, says it found a task sequence already in progress in an unexpected point, then goes flashing through the TS windows again, runs the gathering task and fails since it's already on 10.  Never cleans up after itself.  It shows in the monitoring section of MDT as "Running" at 29% on step 8 of 24 and just sits there.

I finally made a backup of my CS file and renamed the ZT CS file to CustomSettings.ini.  I then proceeded to run theLiteTouch.vbs script, which worked this time completely automated, did everything and finished.  I ran it again this time calling theLiteTouch.vbs from a batch file, worked again.  So something about adding parameters to the call ofLiteTouch.vbs is breaking the process :/

Is there something special I'm missing you're supposed to do when you pass parameters that way?
