Windows 10 deployment fails randomly on one type of PC/hardware - installation can not continue

I am deploying Windows 10 1803 based image which contains some additional SW. We have several types of computers - mostly Dell, some Panasonic laptops and some HP workstations (HP 7300MT). On these HP machines the deploy fails randomly with message "The Computer Restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error.  Windows installation cannot proceed.  To install Windows, click OK to restart the computer and then restart the installation". The second or third installation on the same PC usually works. I do not know why this is happening just on these HP machines.

There is not drivers injections during the MDT setup. Previouly Windows 10 version 1709 worked well on these machines.

Where can I find the reason of the failure?

How to replicate HKCU registry setting to all user using unattended or MDT

Hi,

I have to implement show hidden file and show file extension for all user. This can be done using registry setting. But problem is that it is in HKCU setting and we want to implement for all user.

We have a situation where we can not implement GPO for this, so is there any way to do this using unattended or with MDT.

i have tried to add synchronous command in OOBE phase to show hidden file and set copy profile true. This did work for the user in which deployment finish, but it did not replicated the setting for other user.

I also tried to run synchronous command at specialize phase but this also did not work for any user even for which deployment completed.

Thanks

Looking for assistance with GPO to prevent peer-to-peer MS Updates.

I know very little about GPO. We have a Server Unit which should maintain this.

During MDT imaging, I can turn off peer-to-peer and also disable driver updates during MS Updates.
We also have an OU which is the ONLY OU to allow MS Updates. All of the others prevent Updates.

However, while in an OU which prevents MS Update, clients still get updates via peer-to-peer. These are computers
that were deployed prior to me fixing this through MDT.

What I'm hoping to find is a GPO template setting to prevent peer-to-peer updates, regardless of the OU.
So far, our Server Unit is preventing updates from MS itself. They are not addressing the peer-to-peer issue.

Unless I tell them specifically where to make a change...and what to change, nothing will get changed.

Has anyone modified the peer-to-peer option to prevent updates from happening from pc to pc?
Thanks!

Prefer UUID over MAC

Hi,

Is it possible to tell MDT to prefer a certain identifier over another? We have lots of Surface devices along with Surface docks, so the Surfaces themselves could be deployed when connected to any dock.

MDT seems to always prefer the MAC of the dock, rather than the UUID of the Surface, so we end up having to manually enter the computer name (we have MDT to only prompt for computer name, all other wizard screens are automated).

Thanks

Pen drives not booting up now

hello, have been using MDT 2013 for some while now when im imaging i use the Pen drives to boot the machine.

However the pen drives are now not booting, i have tried a couple of pen drives and a couple of different machines and different network cables. Each time i press f12 and boot of the pen drive. All i get each time is the black screen with the blue windows logo.

Anyone else seen this?

And not sure if it is network related as i thought maybe its not as the connection to the deployment server is only booted up from the pen drive.

Thanks

UEFI No Bootable Devices Found

MDT 6.3.8443 on 2008 R2

trying to deploy image to Dell Latitude 5590

BIOS boot options are "Legacy for External Devices ONLY", or UEFI

Image was created from ISO. Drivers for Latitude 5590 added to Out of Box Drivers

Selection Profile Created for Latitude 5590

Task created in Windows 10 Task Sequence to inject drivers for 5590

When booting device, I press <F12> Note says Legacy boot mode does not support OS boot on internal storage devices such as HDD, SDD, NVMe, or eMMC. It is intended for use with external storage devices only, such as SD Card, USB, and Network PXE.

I select Change Boot Mode Settings and choose Legacy External Device Boot Mode, Secure Boot Off

Intel Boot Manager starts, I press <F12> to PXE boot and get to my Boot WIM options menu. We run both WDS and MDT. I select MDT Server. GUI is displayed. I select my Windows 10 Task Sequence. Task Sequence runs, I can see it go through the tasks, inject the drivers for the 5590 and install the OS but when I reboot I get the "No Bootable Devices Found" error.

I restart and select Change Boot Mode Settings. switch back to UEFI; Secure Boot: ON

Reboot and get same "No Bootable Devices Found"

I checked the Task Sequence and verified that the Format and Partition (UEFI) task is present.

The image works as expected on devices with the BIOS set to Legacy Mode.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated as we're getting a wave of new laptops with this same type of BIOS.

Thanx

Installing all Windows and Office updates via WSUS in Task Sequence

$

Hi community,

I want to achieve a seemingly simple task: When I build my master image (Windows 10 Education 1803, with Office 2016 and other things), the task sequence correctly runs the step with installing updates via WSUS. However, it seems there are only security updates being installed. Office 2016 updates are completely omitted.

My unsuccsessful attempt to solve this was like this: I let the task sequence import lokal GPOs which are configured to install all reccomended updates and also optional updates then do a restart and then continue with the wsus updates process.

The following happend after the restart: the GPOs are correctly applied and the internal wsus is contacted and the usual update process starts. HOWEVER: it makes no difference. there are no Office 2016 Updates installed and only the same Windows Updates like before.

When i go into the Windows Update settings you can see that the GPOs are not yet applied correctly, since you still have the option to manually change the switch for searching for recommended updates etc. I know this behavior from previous versions where it seems that only after the first initial search for updates via internet the settings are applied in the update settings page.

What is the solution here? What am I doing wrong?

Greetings!

Correction: i didn't mean "recommended updates" but updates for other microsoft products.

if i start office afterwards, i still have to manually choose the update behavior in office... this shouldn't be, since i can see in gpedit.msc that these settings are activated.

MDT 2013 Offline Media

I am trying to create a Zero Touch Installation (ZTI) offline media (ISO file) to do remote installations.

I have successfully created the ISO; and it executes the installation without any user intervention; but when it completes and reboots the machine, the use is constantly prompted to insert the media (DVD).

I can remove all the information in the media rules and go through the installation and answer all the questions and it works fine.  So I don't think its a problem with the Task Sequence.  I believe its something (missing?) in the rules.

Any suggestions?

Question regarding availability of applications to install via Applications or Task Sequences in Deployment Workbench

$

Bit of an odd question, but I haven't seen a plain answer yet.  I have a question as to where application files reside depending on which module they are in in the Deployment Workbench.  In Deployment Workbench, under Applications, say I create App1 & App2 to be listed as optional installs.  In the Task Sequences module, I add App3 & App4 to the list of sequences to install before doing Windows Updates.  I then create/update the install image.  I'm assuming that App3 & App4 are copied as part of the install image or to the install media, but App1 & App2 are only available via the Applications share on the network, so if App1 or App2 are selected, they will only install if the target PC is correctly on the network and can access the share.  Otherwise, they will try to install, but will error out at the end.   Is this correct?  Thanks

Share Permissions on deploymentShare$

Hello, I have been using MDT 2013 and recently stripped of the server\Users Permissions to the deploymentShare$.

I have now only the named users (active Directory accounts)Creative Owner, server\administrator and System Account on the security tab of the DeploymentShare$.

I thought then to boot up a client and try to login as a domain account that is not listed in the security tab of the DeploymentShare$ and to my surprise i could login , but then got a blank screen after that.

I thought it would say access denied, but is this because the actual Share Permission (deploymentShare$)is set to Everyone?

Thanks

Windows could not parse or process unattend answer file [C:\Windows\Panther\unattend.xml] for pass [Specialize]

I know this is a widely reported error.  My situation is this:  From MDT 2012 U1, I created a normal Sysprep and Capture task sequence.  Made no changes either to the answer file or the TS.  This has previously worked without a hitch.  From my reference Windows 7 X86 vm, I run the litetouch.vbs script and select the above TS, which successfully captures the image.  When the VM is done, it restarts and goes through the OOBE (installing devices, services, etc.).  After installing devices, it throws the error in the title, beyond which I can go no further.  It keeps restarting.

Research has yielded a plethora of possible causes since it deals with the answer file.  I pulled the following logs from the VM:  setuperr.log and setupact.log from c:\windows\panther\unattendgc and the same two logs from c:\windows\panther.  Since the setupact.log files are long, I thought I'd post the two setuperr.log files here.

c:\windows\panther\unattendgc\setuperr.log reads as follows:

2013-04-03 09:57:00, Error [windeploy.exe] Setup.exe failed, returning exit code [0x1f]
2013-04-03 09:57:00, Error [windeploy.exe] Failure occured during online installation. Online installation cannot complete at this time.; hr = 0x80004005

c:\windows\panther\setuperr.log reads as follows:

2013-04-03 09:56:55, Error [setup.exe] SMI data results dump: Source = Name: Microsoft-Windows-IE-InternetExplorer, Language: neutral, ProcessorArchitecture: x86, PublicKeyToken: 31bf3856ad364e35, VersionScope: nonSxS, /settings/IEWelcomeMsg

As I type this, it occurs to me that it may not be a coincidence that the second error log mentions an IE problem, and this is the first image I'm attempting to capture that incorporates IE 10, not 9. Looking at the IE entry in the answer file yeilds this:

I note that version is blank, but I can't edit this field, nor am I sure that it's necessary to edit it.  Is the IE component of the specialize pass even necessary? Could it be removed?

At any rate, I'm going to try reverting to IE 9 and see if that allows me to capture the image.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Powershell script cannot access network shares during OS deployment

$

I have written a powershell script that updates bios on client computers. It works fine when I run it in a separate custom task sequence by itself using litetouch.vbs , however when I run it during OS deployment it fails.

I am running the power shell script from a batch file this way:

PowerShell.exe -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Command "& DDSBIOS.ps1'"

The power shell script runs and tries to access a unc path which is on the deployment server, but a different share. It tests the unc path and reports an error if the path does not exist. So it is reporting that the path does not exist. This is really odd because as I said it works perfectly in a separate task sequence by itself.

What is different about running a powershell script during an OS deployment task sequence vs a custom task sequence? How can I make sure the script has access to the network credentials given at the beginning of the deployment?

Hi,

1. first Dell OptiPlex 7050 model. Added drivers to Out of Box. The image is Windows7 (Dell supports this downgrade).

Deployed without problem corporate image from MDT. Device manager is clean.

2. Knowing that drivers are OK, created Offline Media Key.

3. Deployed from the Key on the same first machine.

PROBLEM: Keyboard, mouse are dead...  During Windows startup lights from mouse and keys gone.

Any ideas what it could be?

Thx.

No of deployment in MDT

We have MDT share in DFS.

We have around 50 thousand win 7 machines planned for deployment to win 10 using MDT PXE setup -> Wipe&load. approach

I have 2 questions

(1) Is there any limitation for MDT deployment at large scale ?

(2) Is there any limit for the number of concurrent connects to the MDT share during deployment ?

MDT unable to to connect to share

I have the latest version of the MDT and the ADK installed on a Server 2019 Server just doing some testing and an issue I'm having is any time I boot a PC with the boot image it will get to the credentials page and after entering any credentials it will tell me network path not found. inside the boot.ini file I have the root set as \\SERVER.DOMAIN.COM\deploymentshare$ so it is set to the fqdn. If I let it sit for awhile eventually it will work and I can log in. while it says network path not found I do have a valid ip and I can ping the server the deployment share is on if I try net use I also get network path not found.

when on a full windows device that is joined to the domain I can enter the fqdn of the share into windows explorer and it will open but if I try this on a non domain joined device I will get network path not found and eventually it will work but if I try to run a task sequence such as to capture an image It also will give me network path not found. the odd thing is on a non domain joined device if I do get it to let me in the share when I run the litetouch file I lose access again while lite touch is running saying network path is not found.

does anyone know a solution to this? I have even tried to set the permissions to everyone having read access just to see and still get the same issue

MDT 8450/ADK 1809/Win10 v1803?

We ran into the "Not enough memory resources are available to process this command." problem with ADK 1803 as described here:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4339170/not-enough-memory-resources-error-cmd-winpe-windows-10

Can we upgrade the ADK to 1809 and still deploy Win10 1803? (We are using MDT separate from SCCM.)
