Microsoft automatic Intel driver updates messing up our Windows 10 HP systems during and post deployment

$

We have HP desktops and laptops we deploy via MDT using the out of box drivers from the HP website and/or via SSM Softpaqs.

However, somewhere during the deployment, even though our Windows updates are configured to be pulled from  our internal  WSUS, these Windows 10 systems keep updating drivers with ones from Microsoft.

The HP laptops update the 18.32.12 wireless drivers from HP that work for the Intel 8260 AC NIC to later versions like 18.40.0.9 that are very buggy to the point of being unusable.  User's cannot even log into their laptops on wifi until we manually roll back the driver.

The HP desktops update the Intel AMT drivers/firmware from our OOB drivers with a later version from Microsoft that is missing the Intel Management and Security Status tool that is mandatory for our systems to automatically get AMT configured.

Why are HP and Microsoft not coordinated in which drivers should or should not get updated automatically?  Aren't the OEMs supposed to post their drivers to Windows Updates so only the correct drivers per model get updated?

How can we stop these systems from using unwanted drivers during deployment or silently updating later?

WSUS update PC during Deployment - MDT

Hi

We have SCCM to push the windows update to the client PC's,but it makes the client machine very slow on newly deployed machines.

I want the windows update to push directly to the newly deployed machine during the initial machine setup stage. We do not have any GPO for windows update set on client PC, as SCCM is configured to push updates.

If the windows update can be pushed to the newly deployed machine, during deployment with patches up to date.

How can configure this on MDT ?

I have  try few things like in custom setting specifying the WSUS Servers details and enabled on the task sequence. but this does not work as it keep on showing searching for updates.

Please let me know how can i fix this problem.

Thanks

FAILURE ( 7706 ): ERROR! Drive D: was not found!

I was wondering if anybody run into this issue and could point me in the right direction.

I have been using MDT for over 4 years and last week was the first time that I have ever seen this "FAILURE ( 7706 ): ERROR! Drive D: was not found!" message. I'm running a MDT 2013 deployment server with AIK 8.1 and this error occured while imaging a Surface Pro 3.

We successfully imaged about  +10 Surface's with this MDT build however they all had 128GB SSD's and and 4GB of RAM this one that failed has a 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM and the issue was replicated on another Surface with the exact same specs.

So far I have;

1) Tried another Surface Pro 3 of the same SKU and it had the exact same issue.

2) Successfully imaged this Surface with Windows 10 and with the Windows 8.1 Pro Surface Pro 3 recover image from Microsoft using USB media.

3) Updated my deployment share to MDT 2013 Update 1 and AIK 10 and tried both the original MDT 2013 standard deployment Task Sequence and the updated MDT 2013 standard deployment Task Sequence both modified for Surface Pro 3 (Driver Firmware, patches etc...)

4) Updated the Surface Pro 3 driver set with the very latest drivers but I noticed that even the latest drivers still uses the Intel ahci 8 driver from 2013 that the worked fine on the other 128GB SSD 4GB RAM Surface Pro 3 SKU's that we imaged before.

When looking at the BDD.log I can see that SSD drive is successfully cleared of any existing partition but it fails to create any partitions and after it fails in WinPE if you manually run Diskpart no drives seems to be available even though driver for the storage controller should still be loaded.

I have done a lot of research and I have found similar issues but none of the solution suggested has solved this issue and I'm running out of things to try.

Here are some of the Logs Files, let me know if any others are required;

Copy a Deployment Share to a new server

$

Our current MDT server needs to be rebuilt so to avoid any down time I have built another server to use while I redo the current one.  Everything I have read says all I have to do is a simple copy of the Deployment Shares (there are two I need to move) to the new server and do and update to get the share(s) working. (note: the servers are have different names) And in fact it does kind of work except that when you run the imaging process on the temp server it's running all the TS from the old server and picking up the drivers and OS from the old server.

So further research shows that I need to change the server names Boot.ini and Config.ini files.  If I do it from the console snap in gives me an error. (I have tried changing it at the console and in the .ini files before hand)

So what step am I missing?  Do I need to close the deployment share before I copy it over to the new server?

Thanks for you assistance.

Task Sequence to restart after final task is complete

I've been using MDT for a while and I wanted to know if I can create a task sequence variable to restart the computer after all tasks have been completed?

I had to remove the FinishAction=Reboot in the custom.ini file for a special task sequence, but I still want all my other TS to continue to reboot once finished.  Can I add a task sequence variable to each task sequence to get them to reboot when finished?

Thanks,

Michael

MDT 2012 Server is up and running. I mistakenly deleted a Task Sequence step called "Install Application" that I thought was not needed (I know I should have disabled it and tested).

I have a problem now, when I went to image a computer I did not get application list (This used to work before I deleted the above TS step) with items to check and uncheck for installation.  "Install Application" TS was readded but now when I try to image I get this error:

"The task sequence has been suspended. LiteTouch is trying to install applications. This cannot be performed in Windows PE."

I've tried moving it to different positions on the list (Higher and lower) to no avail, I always get the same error. Please advise.

-Thanks in advance!

Import Customized image with ICD into MDT 2013 update 2

Hello,

I'm using USMT to capture a provisioning package from reference PC, then importing this package into Windows ICD to customize my image. Now so far everything works fine if I create a bootable USB and I would image same PC with no issues.

I'm deploying Windows 10 Ent. I was able to import my custom image in MDT, create Lite Touch boot.wim and import it in WDS. PC will boot straight and before it finish the installation it fails in (Install Operating System) step.

In my custom wim i configured the disk also skipped the oobe, also in choosing Standard Client TS and disabled (New Computer) step as I already formatted the disk.

How should I configure my TS in this case?

Thanks in advance.

this is a Lab environment with Standalone WDS and DHCP setup.

Error 500 : variable is undefined VBScript Code : ValidateTSList

Hello,

I can't load wizard properly while PXE booting on a virtual machine and I'm getting this error :

Error 500 : variable is undefined VBScript Code : ValidateTSList

This is working without any trouble on a physical machine but it's broken on a virtual machine... (we are using Hyper-V and Windows Server 2012 R2)

Do you have some ideas about this ? Scripts files haven't been modified manually... I already updated deployment share and changed the boot image in our WDS, it didn't resolve the problem.

Thanks a lot,

Valentin

MDT 2012 - Error while importing driver CABs

Hello community,

I have a huge problem with MDT2012 since yesterday: I cleaned my driver repository a little and now I cannot import driver CAB´s anymore, every time it ends with this error:

Funny: For testing I have created a second (new) "deployment share" and the same CABs gets imported without problems there. So the problem must be somewhere in my old share, but I have no clue how to fix this.

I crawled tho hole web and can not find anything! I don´t wont to move my whole share to the new one :(

Any advise?

Windows 10 1607 LTSB 2016 LayoutModification.XML being ignored

$

On Windows 10 1511 or LTSB 2015 I was able to successfully export a customized start menu using the following steps

-->LayoutModification.xml and through MDT TS import it back into the correct directory

--> Copy XML

xcopy /y "%SCRIPTROOT%\LayoutModification.xml" "C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Shell"

--> Remove TileDataLayer

cmd /c rmdir "C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer" /q /s

Any new user, the startmenu would be fine!

Since using a new reference image LTSB 2016 and keeping the same TS steps, the LayoutModification.XML does copy over but is being ignored for all user accounts.

Using latest MDT 6.3.8443.1000 and again Windows 10 LTSB 2016... Copy of my XML file is below as well

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Building Windows Server 2012 R2 while MDT running on it

$

Hello,

Not familiar with MDT, but our standard shop build for Server 2012 R2 uses mdt within an ISO image.  During a server build, we boot an ISO image, enter standard network properties (eg. IP, DNS servers, etc), specify a share location where the build files are located, then the 'build' proceeds.  The build files are read from the share location we specified which may take hours due to the distance/network between the server to be built and the share location.  Consequently, the build may take 1.5 hours or 6 hours.

The only option in our build is to format the entire C drive of the server to be built.  Question I have is can mdt work where it would run off a D:\ drive, primary partition, and rebuild the C:\ drive, primary partition?  In other words, can mdt work where we have 1 physical drive split into 2 partitions and the C:\ drive is built from reading the build files on a separate D:\ drive, partition?  We wouldn't have to drag build files over the WAN and take hours just to rebuild a server.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your help! SdeDot

How to disable local Administrator and disable AutoLogon after install

Hi,

I need to disable the local Administrator account and AutoLogon after MDT finishes installation, what commands do I need to add to achieve that in Task Sequence?

MDT - Can I disable the Administrator account

$

I found threads on how to turn it on and maybe some on how to turn it off. I already see how to have my task sequence *NOT* enable the administrator account. I just remove the corresponding line in the unattend.xml file. However, are there any repercussions to this? I already changed what account it automatically logs into.

Disabling Admin Account after deploying from MDT

I have 2 accounts in my reference computer. One is administrator and one id ABC. I disabled admin account in reference image. I want to capture it and deploy it on physical machine using MDT and WDS. Is there any way I can disable admin account and set password for other account after the deployment?

(MDT 2012) - Black screen after install, restart allows continue

$

Hopefully this is a quick one!  I've been slowly moving from thin images to thick images for the deployment speed and I've come across a strange problem.

I have used MDT 2012 to capture and deploy a 7 Pro 64bit image and straight after the OS installation the TS will reboot and I'll just get a black screen with a mouse.  No matter how long I leave it it will just sit there.

If I restart the PC manually the OS loads fine and the TS continues as if nothing happened.

The MDT logs don't show any errors or anything,  the Windows event logs don't show anything (other than a single error showing that the PC was shutdown unexpectedly).  I've rebuilt the image twice and deployed to our test model and a virtual machine with the same result.  I originally thought it might be driver related but the VM has a completely different driver set etc.

There is only a couple of applications installed onto the thick image (and we have created these images before for our laptops using the same application list with no issues).

Any ideas?

Thanks!

MDT Failure with Unreadable Summary Screen

I have a system fail an OSD task sequence around half way through and the failure screen HTA popup that would normally be salmon colored with a description of what the problem was, popped up white with no readable text.  It was faded and blank as if"not responding" trying to load.

What would cause this issue?
