PXE Booting a new laptop fails

$

0

We already have it up and running. When I PXE boot a new laptop before it gets to the first screen where I enter my credentials, I get a the following error message: “Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart. (100% complete)

If you'd like to know more you can search online later for this error system thread exception not handled (ndis.sys)”

 All I can find on this is related to BSOD which this really isn’t. I’m thinking maybe because the drivers needed for this new laptop aren’t in the boot.wim since this is a new model in our environment.

Domain join failure in 802.1x secured environment

I am trying to build a deployment process that works in our 802.1x secured environment.

I have the WinPE phase of deployment working great, and I have Windows 7 really close to working.

I am using unattend.xml during the deployment process to call a script that will start and configure the Wired AutoConfig service (dot3svc).  I have added the command to call the script as part of the Microsoft-Windows-Deployment section of unattend.xml. It is working great.  I get connected to the network successfully and the service is configured to "Automatic so it reconnects on all reboots.

My trouble is that the Microsoft-Windows-Deployment section of the unattend.xml looks like it gets processed AFTER the domain join attempt so my computers are failing to join the domain during the minisetup.

Is there another way to get the network configured before domain join is attempted? Or is there a good method to retry domain join after Windows completes minisetup and the task sequence is resumes? Which would be better?

Install Windows 8.1 Enterprise on a Surface Pro 3/4 using a UEFI USB Flash Drive

$

Greetings,

I need to start deploying MS Surfaces Pro 3/4.  I just got them in and of course management thinks I can just wipe up an image pretty quick.

Since this is my first Surface, it won't be quick as I have to learn the in/outs of its UEFI etc differences from a starndard laptop.

I've search and read and it seems pretty simple (but something is not working though).

Here is my plan, I'm using a Offline USB drive, which I know they work as I have to used them to deploy to laptps at remote locations (PXE is not allowed).

I build a USB flash drive using the URL below.  Also, below are the drivers I imported.

Out Of Box Drivers
SurfacePro3_Win8x_151026_1.zip (all of them drivers and Firmware)

Drivers for WinPE
Surface Ethernet Adapter
Surface Gigabit Ethernet Adapter

UEFI USB Setup
http://deploymentresearch.com/Research/Post/471/UEFI-and-NTFS-Friends-to-MDT-2013-at-last

Drivers
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=38826

Surface Settings
Trusted Platform Module (TPM) = Enabled
Secure Bootl Control = Enabled
Configure Alternative System Boot Order = USB -> SSD

BitLocker was never enabled.

Questions / Issue.

When booting from UEFI USB flash drive on teh Surface Pro 3, I get an error "Invalid Signature detected.  Check Secure Boot Policy in Setup"?  Does this mean I need to disable Secure Boot or something?

Will the UEFI USB with the Offline media be enough to boot the MS Surface Pro 3/4?

Our AD (for now) does not have the BitLocker schema added, so I was thinking of enabling BitLocking with a startup PIN.  Will this be possible or do I need to tweak my Task Sequence?

Any suggestions?

Thank you for your time.

MDT 2013 Windows 7 Enterprise error while sysprep - "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error."

Hi

i have a problem with staging Windows 7 Enterprise x86 and x64 version (by the way, Windows 7 Professional x86 and x64 works like a charm). Here are some informations regarding my environment:

  • Server:                     Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2
  • MDT Version:  Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2013 (6.2.5019.0)
  • Clients:                     Dell Latitude xxxx (error logs and messages in this threat are from an Dell Latitude E7450)

The strange thing is that sometimes the installation works without any problem (about 30%) but mostly the installation fails with following error message while sysprep (so on first reboot after installation):

Install Windows

"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."

i did a lot of reseach but without any success:

  • added patch KMDF-1.11 with dism to the .wim image
  • added patch UMDF-1.11 with dism to the .wim image
  • added patch KMDF-1.11 to "Packages" in MDT
  • added patch UMDF-1.11 to "Packages" in MDT
  • HKLM/SYSTEM/SETUP/STATUS/ChildCompletion Setup.exe set to 3 but then sysprep is not completed successfully

If you need  any log-file feel free to ask me about it and i will provide it to you. Due to my account not being verified i have to upload the logs somewhere and send you a link. I hope you can help me with this problem.

Many thanks!

winload.efi , can't boot pxe and other questions

Trying to boot a new lenovo x1 carbon pc but I get this error:

1. When I read this on google it said I need to update my PE?

2. How can I see what version of PE I have?

3.Will I lose all my drivers if I update my PE?

I updated my MDT to 2013 update 1 and WAIK 10 to be able to deploy windows 10.My workaround for this error is to disable secure boot, and change UEFI mode to Legacy only then I can pxe boot.

4.Do you know any other solution?

My other questions are:

5. Do you know what ROW I can't write in customsettings.ini to create a local account that is not admin and assign it lets say a name and a password? Can the password be random and saved somewhere like ad or a text document? Sometimes people don't have a network when they receive our their new pcs and this could be a solution, to logon to a local account and the remote it.

6. Can I choose to hide a task sequence that will deploy windows 10 but still choose it somehow? I want to test deploy windows 10 without other users being able to choose that task sequence?

7. Is it also possibly to change the pxe language to Swedish keyboard instead of English?

Thank you guys and girl!

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone can help me as I've been pulling my hair out for a week over this one. I had my task sequences working fine a couple weeks back and now they fail with this error:

I've googled around and tried a lot of 'fixes' I've found from various sites but nothing seems to have remedied this issue. The only thing that changed (That I can think of) is the IP of the VM was changed to a different one. This seems to be when it started failing. All steps leading up to this point seem to work fine. Does anyone have any sugggestions? This is on a newly built, Hyper-v, server 2012 R2, MDT 2013 setup.

Much Appreciated..!

Hey everyone,

I'm creating a W8.1 task sequence and am facing issues while getting secedit execute in FullOS.

The .sdb is copied locally on the client before executing the Secedit Command line step.

Run Command Line - cmd /c secedit.exe /configure /db C:\MyFolder\ABC.sdb

This fails with a generic error 0x8004005.

MDT 2013 Update 1 - unable to obtain bitlocker key

$

Since upgrading from MDT 2012 to MDT 2013 Update 1 we have been having a bunch of issues, but this one is the most important right now. To test this, I have installed a brand new copy of Windows 10 Enterprise on a separate computer. On this fresh copy of Windows 10, I installed Win 10 ADK and MDT 2013 Update 1 and created a brand new deployment share. I created a HyperV image of a brand new Windows 7 x64 SP1 installation, captured it with the new MDT, and then tried to deploy with the new MDT.

However, when deploying this image, after the first reboot post the OS install phase, the computer gives the following black screen error right after BIOS:

"Status: 0xc0210000

Info: The action could not be completed because the BitLocker Driver Encryption key required to unlock the volume could not be obtained."

I have tested with 3 different computer models so far and it's the same result. Tested with Dell 7010, 9010, and E7440. Yes TPM is enabled and activated in BIOS. In addition, this happened with a Windows 8 image as well.

Since this happens on a brand new Deployment Share that I created just for the purpose of testing this issue, what could I be doing wrong? It worked perfectly out of the box with MDT 2012. I'm going crazy trying to figure this out, any ideas?

MDT 2012 Win7 x64 capture fails - boot loop

$

Hi everyone,

I'm pretty new to MDT and having a problem capturing a Win7 x64 reference image.

It seems to start out fine doing the Sysprep and so on, but then it has to restart the computer and after that it goes into a boot loop. After this, I have been forced to format and reinstall Win7 on the computer. This picture shows what it loops through in about 20 seconds - and it shows nothing else than what's on these pictures :)

www.jaded.dk/boot_loop.png

I have been Google'ing alot, but can't find any post with the same issue, since most other get an error msg which I dont.

Here is some info about the setup.

I'm deploying the task sequence locally using these commands:

net use * \\mdtserver\DeploymentShare$ /user:domain\username

cscript \\mdtserver\DeploymentShare$\Scripts\LiteTouch.wsf

Server running MDT 2012 U1 - Win server 2008 R2, 64 bit

The laptop on which i'm trying to capture the ref img is a HP Elitebook 8470p. It is fully patched with windows updates and I have installed a few apps like Office 2010, flash player, reader etc.

The "Rules" on my MDT Workbench is like this:

[Settings]
Priority=Default
Properties=MyCustomProperty

[Default]
OSInstall=Y
SkipCapture=NO
SkipAdminPassword=YES
SkipProductKey=YES
SkipComputerBackup=YES
SkipBitLocker=YES
SkipTimeZone=YES
SkipLocaleSelection=YES
InputLocale=0406:00000406
KeyboardLocale=0406:00000406
KeyboardLocalePE=0406:00000406
SystemLocale=0406:00000406
UILanguage=0406
UserLocale=0406:00000406

My task sequence looks like this:

www.jaded.dk/task_seq.png

I don't know where to find a log of the capture, to get a hint of what has gone wrong.

Hope you can help me out here :) And please let me know if you need more info.

Thanks

Morten

MDT 2013 Deployed Windows 8.1 image missing some property tabs

Heloo all,

I'm somewhat new to MDT 2013 deployments I have an issue.

When I look at the users or even the admin property tabs I'm missing some of the property tabs such as Location Previous, and only show the Security tab, General etc. I notice that the Owner is set as TrustedInstaller. Any ideas why I am missing some of the Property Tabs? Did perhaps sysprep not finalize or something like this?

Odd Problem With MDT 2012 Deployment

$
0

Disclaimer:  I'm an MDT n00b and barely know how to do anything other than the basics.

The odd problem:  Computers that I deploy Windows 7 to using MDT will NOT (after deployement is complete) pass credentials to our proxy (Smoothwall - NTLM Authentication) and cannot not access the internet.  It doesn't matter the flavor of Windows 7: 32bit/64bit or Pro/Ultimate same result.  Does this on an unpatched machine with only IE8 or a fully patched machine with IE9.  I've diddled all the security and connection settings in IE that I know to diddle with the same result. And it's not just an IE problem.  It does it with Firefox, too.  Now getting to intranet sites is no problem... this is strictly an internet proxy authentication issue.

Now... why am I asking the MDT forum about this?  Because I can load Windows 7 the old fashioned way with a DVD made from the same ISO that I used when setting up MDT and it works fine. So  MDT must be doing something differently when deploying Win 7.  As a side note, when I deploy Windows 8 using MDT we do not have this issue. Maybe Microsoft just wants me to upgrade? :)

Everything else about the computer seems quite normal.  No undetected drivers.  Windows activates normally.  I can join the domain either during or after the process.  Install applications automatically.  I mean the whole MDT process seems to be working great otherwise.

Help?  Please?

Removing Windows 10 built in Apps

$

Hello,

I created and captured a Windows 10 Reference Build. During my build process I removed some of the Windows 10 built in Apps using a PS command. I made some changes to the profile. When I bring down the image I am seeing the profile changes are there but the built in Apps are back! I was unable to find a place in the unattended file to remove these apps. So does that mean I need to remove these apps each time I build new computer or do I need to do it a different way?<o:p></o:p>

Thanks
