Copying Total-Control Driver Structure

$

Hey guys,

I've been searching for this and haven't found an answer yet.

I started using a total-control method deploying my drivers and for the most part it's been great - But when trying to import my driver package to another deployment share, it reports tat it cannot copy files because there are duplicates.

I thought it might have just been complaining about the files itself (because MDT seems to manage the back end files on its own, as not to create duplicates, etc.) and still be copying all the links in my organized folders... but it isn't doing them either.

Has anybody found a solution for this?

Thanks,

Windows 10 customized start menu question?

$

Hello,

I am trying to do make a customized start menu using the process of copying LayoutModification.xml file to the C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Shell folder. I am using a PowerShell script to do the copy xml file. The file copy is successful but when I login as a new user I do not see the customized start menu. I am doing the file copy in State Restore in the TS.

  • Doing this on Win 10 Enterprise RTM joined to a domain
  • Do I need to delete/rename the existing file?
  • Do I need to rename my LayoutModification.xml file?
  • I am doing the LayoutModification.xml file copy in the correct place in the TS

Multiple entries of "Windows Boot manager" in UEFI on Surface Pro 3

Hi

We are deploying a custom captured image on  Surface Pro 3 using a  using MDT 2013.
Every time i deploy a image there is a new "Windows Boot Manager" entry created and same is visible when you try to boot from a device.

The below post talks about the same issue but option given is to use bcdedit
http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/7817-multiple-windows-boot-manager-entries-under-uefi-section/

The below post says that Dell would be fixing it in future BIOS releases.
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/192596f1-1c68-4c4b-8b0f-21b279a79403/eufi-options-multiple-windows-boot-manager-entries?forum=mdt

Is it a bug with the surface pro 3 UEFI or am i doing something wrong?
We are using the same image to deploy ON Lenovo Thinkpad 10 but i dont see this issue.

BCDEdit /deletevalue might be an option but want to know if it is a known bug or something wrong with the way i am doing.

Deploy Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 to Surface Pro 3 without Bitlocker

We use an 3rd party disc encryption software.

If a Surface Pro 3 is taken out of the box, and imaged with our MDT Windows 8.1 or 10 image, Bitlocker will be re-enabled.

Is there any change that can be made in the TS to prevent Bitlocker from being enabled?

Litetouch Deployment failing out of nowhere. -2147023504

Hey everyone. We recently switched vendors that we obtain our laptops from. We use the HP Elitebook 9480m. Previously all laptops we received would image fine using MDT 2013 Update 1 and Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 (x86 and x64).

Now we get these laptops in (again, same model) from another vendor and they are failing on deployment. They appear to be deploying fine and after the operating system deployment I get an insanely generic error message:

"Litetouch deployment failed, Return Code = -2147467256 0x80004005"

It shows this error twice and no additional details. Based on snooping around the web this seems like a very generic error message. What is interesting is if I try to deploy to an older laptop that we previously received from our other vendor it will deploy fine. I checked the BIOS settings between the 2 systems and they appear to be identical. There haven't been any driver updates for this laptops in quite awhile that we haven't already imported that I would think could affect this. Any ideas?

Replacing Direct Database Lookups with Web Services

$

Hi All,

I have a pretty basic question on Web Services as I have only just started to use them now that we are reaching the crunch time for our desktop rollout. I have to rollout a couple of thousand PCs in a very distributed environment using SCCm 2012 R2 with MDT 2013 U1 integration.

Currently we are using CustomSettings.INI with the standard database lookups that the MDT Workbench produces out of the box. They work great. However Over the WAN, as Johan points out in several of his TechEd sessions, we should really look to Web Services to provide the same functionality.

To that end I have downloaded and installed the Maik Kosters Web Service from CodePlex. We have a pair of load balanced Web Servers that are hosting the web service and the lookups themselves also works well using a browser.

I have been working through the CustomSettings.INI file to replace the appropriate Database Sections with equivalent Web Service sections. What I am struggling with is how to efficiently replace the Database calls. For example:

  • We have a single Computer Record for every PC
  • Each Computer Record has OSComputerName + 2 Custom Properties and is associated with up to 2 Roles
  • Each Role has a series of Properties and up to 25 Packages

To get this information out using a single CustomSettings.INI file is a bit of an effort to be honest.

My main question is, is this achievable using a single CustomSettings.INI and the default Web Service methods provided by Maik Koster? The only other alternatives I can think of are:

  1. Using multiple CustomSettings.ini files and associated ZTIGather.wsf scripts in Run Command Line Tasks
  2. Developing new Methods that help reduce the number of calls needed to retrieve the data we need
  3. Using another script from Maik Kosters zti_executewebservice.wsf"http://maikkoster.com/executing-web-services-a-generic-mdt-script/" and, again running multiple commands in the Task Sequence.

What is every else doing?

Thanks again in advance,

Nathan Sutton

When running the PXE boot and litetouch i want to select from the drivers available on the MDT console. (client machine one being imaged).

Can this be done?

Hi.

Just took delivery of some Dell Latitude E5450 and they don't boot using a MDT USB boot stick (x64). It loads the MDT environment screen for a second and then blue screens. I can boot up fine with a regular Windows PE USB stick. Any ideas ? I can't see any log files created anywhere. I'm using MDT 2012 Update 1 Environment.

Appreciate any help here thanks !

MDT 2013 Update 1 Windows 10 Deployment Not Automatically Logging On After Windows Updates

$

I created a new Windows 10 standard deployment task and clicked the check boxes to enable the Windows Updates tasks in the TS.  It logged in automatically after each reboot during the deployment until it rebooted for updates.  Then it stops at the Administrator login screen waiting for manual user login after each reboot.  After manually logging in for each round of updates, the deployment task completes successfully.

Does something have to be manually configured for autologin to work or should it work by default?

Windows 10 upgrade with MDT

Hi,

I'm trying to test the upgrade procedure described here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt426643%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

When I enter the credentials tab, it seems to require that I'm testing in a Domain Controller. I'm on a test environment and I do not have it. Is the presence of a Domain mandatory to perform this upgrade task? I tried to put workgroup and local credentials, but it fails with the message network resource name not found. Where am I wrong? can you please help me on what kind of data this tab expects me to enter? I got error even if I fill the data with a well known network path. Many thanks

MDT 2013 & WSUS, poor performances with ZTIWindowsUpdate.wsf

Hello Guys

Here are the config ;
- Server HP DL380e Gen8 / 2704v2 (4 cores) / 96 GB RAM / 6 HDD 15k SAS RAID 10
- Windows 2012 R2, WORKGROUP
- WDS standalone mode (no AD), WSUS with SQL 2012 SP2 database, MDT 2013 update 1
- Customsettings.ini configured with variable WSUSServer=http://myserver:8530
- HP PC with SSD / 8 GB RAM / Core I5

Here are the issue ;
- Deployment works perfectly (no error at the end)
- The time for Windows Update in pre-app mode and post-app mode takes an extended time to finish...

Example ; Windows 8.1 deployment + Office 2013 + 4/5 freewares = 4h30 from the PXE boot to the successfull message... 3H30 are used only for the "Downloading updates", about 30 minutes for the installing updates (which is normal)

If I disable the Updates steps in the task sequence, the deployment takes max 30 minutes to finish.

The WSUS works perfectly ;
- If I configure the WSUS settings from the gpedit.msc console into Windows, and told Windows to use my server as a WSUS Server, the download works great and takes max 1 minutes to finish.

It's look like that the issue only occur when using WSUS from the ZTIscript while a task sequence is pushed on the PC.

Does anyone has already seen this issue ? Any idea ?
I has already seen that problem on the old server (which used SATA drive in RAID 1...) with MDT 2013 (no U1). So the issue is repeatable.

Thanks a lot

MDT Monitoring - WinPE not reporting to MDT Monitoring database

Hello

I have implemented MDT Monitoring and DART using guidance from the following articles

http://deploymentresearch.com/Research/Post/282/Using-DaRT-8-and-MDT-2012-Update-1-Monitoring-with-ConfigMgr-2012-SP1-Beta

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/alex_semi/archive/2014/07/07/dart-remote-recovery-starts-too-late-in-your-osd-mdt-deployment-here-is-the-fix.aspx

Dart Remote Recovery is successfully launching at the start of the WinPE Task Sequence Wizard, however I am not getting any information back into MDT Monitoring. I have checked various logs as suggested in this article, but still no luck

http://blogs.technet.com/b/mniehaus/archive/2012/05/10/troubleshooting-mdt-2012-monitoring.aspx

The MDT_Monitor SDF file is getting "Modified" by something, but I haven't got the tools to look directly at the SDF database.

Has anyone successfully got this working? I am desperate to get the Monitoring Data to work so that we can remotely get to our WinPE Boot Images to initiate Task sEquences

Any help greatly appreciated

Quick Access Desktop is Admin

All of my quick links point to the correct user but Desktop.  I've done some searching but I don't see anything online to help me.  CopyProfiie is set to True for both of my Task Sequences

I have two deployment shares
one for capturing the image
one for deploying

The capture sequence does all of my settings and everything has been working but this
The deployment share just deploys the golden capture

It's just confusing why all of the quick access links are correct but Desktop

Thanks for any help you can give me!

MDT 2012 USB Deployment not changing DeployRoot to new location

$

I'm currently seeing an issue when deploying machines using USB.

Initially the USB drive letter is set to M: in WinPE and the machine builds accordingly. At the first reboot into the O/S however the drive letter for the USB key is set to E: but the deployment is not running because MDT thinks it still should be M:

Property DeployRoot is now = E:\Deploy

Property ResourceRoot is now = E:\Deploy

Property DeploymentMethod is now = MEDIA

DeploymentMethod = MEDIA

DeployRoot = M:\Deploy

Property DeployDive is now = M:

DeployDrive = M:

If I use subst to set E: to M: and run litetouch manually then the build completes.

Any Ideas?

Application hanging on install - ZTI Heartbeat

$

Hi all,

I'm using MDT 2013 Update 1 to create a Windows Server 2012 R2 image with certain modifications including installing  a number of applications.

I'm having some issues whereby the deployment seems to hang for 5 - 60 minutes where it looks like nothing is happening.

The first time I encountered this is when I used the Cleanup_before_sysprep script created by Michael N. The build seemed to just hang for 15 - 30 minutes and then would crank back up and complete the build.

The next time I've encountered it is trying to install the Citrix VDAWorkstationsetup.exe. Again, the install seems to just hang until I interact with the OS and move a window around. Then it seems to wake up.

Has anyone come across this type of behaviour before? If so, is there a way to troubleshoot it to find out what's going on?

What log files am i looking for and where would they reside?

Thanks,

Mark
