MDT - winpe does not see HDD after subsequent re-imaging

Hello everyone,

I am facing a weird issue with my MDT deployment now. I am deploying WIN 7 64 bits on different models of workstation already re-imaged numerous times in the past using the same process ie with o USB stick.

The issue I am running into is that if for whatever reasons the deployment is stopped, then the HDD is no longer visible from win pe and therefore subsequent deployments are failing.

So the steps are easy to reproduce:

start a deployment
interrupt the deployment
start again
deployment fails with the following error: disk(0) not found which is normal because the drive is not being seen anymore by winpe

Thank you all for your time and help!

Windows 10 customized start menu question?

$

Hello,

I am trying to do make a customized start menu using the process of copying LayoutModification.xml file to the C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Shell folder. I am using a PowerShell script to do the copy xml file. The file copy is successful but when I login as a new user I do not see the customized start menu. I am doing the file copy in State Restore in the TS.

  • Doing this on Win 10 Enterprise RTM joined to a domain
  • Do I need to delete/rename the existing file?
  • Do I need to rename my LayoutModification.xml file?
  • I am doing the LayoutModification.xml file copy in the correct place in the TS

Some deployments do not finish state restore.

We have a couple computers -- different brands -- that will boot into Windows but won't complete the State Restore phase: Windows updates, install applications, and custom tasks. Here is a screenshot from the end of the BDD.log:

The universal unique identifier (UUID) type is not supported

We deploy our Win8.1 build to MS Surface 3 Pro using MDT 2013. Occasionally users get the message "The universal unique identifier (UUID) type is not supported". The article athttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2976660 suggests putting the following command into the task sequence - cmd /c reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\gpsvc" /v Type /t REG_DWORD /d 0x10 /f . Trouble is when I add this Command Line step into the sequence it errors at this point. Does anyone know how I can get this to work?

Add drivers to existing image for nonexistant hardware?

What is the best way to force drivers into an image for a device that will not be attached to the computer during the MDT deployment process?

There will be a device the users will plug in after the workstation after the workstation is delivered.  Since the device will not be connected during the deployment task sequence, the Inject Drivers task will not include these drivers.

We need the drivers to be automatically installed from the computer's local driver store when the user later connects the device.

Add Task or Execute Command to "Update Media Content"

Before I delve further into researching this myself, I wanted to see if anyone has already been able to add an additional step to the "Update Media Content" process?

Scenario is that there is a request to add the ability to CheckSum the Image/ISO

  • To ensure that when DVD/Blu-Ray is created from the ISO everything matches
  • Security wants a process to ensure Image is "unaltered"

So, my thinking is this:

  1. Create a way to Generate/List/Verify MD5 Checksum <-- (This is already done using MS FCIV with custom CMD files)
  2. Add an additional folder to the "Update Media Content" process (http://blogs.technet.com/b/mniehaus/archive/2013/10/10/ensuring-custom-gpo-packs-are-copied-to-linked-deployment-shares.aspx) <-- (Can do this easily enough)
  3. Add a step the "Update Media Content" that will run my "CreateMD5.cmd" right before the "Reset read-only attributes." step is done during the "Update Media Content" process.

Anyone tried/done something like this before (Step # 3)?

When installing MDT2013U1 I'm getting no help file "Microsoft Deployment Toolkit Documentation Library.chm" in the folder "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\Bin" like in earlier versions, is it by design or a bug? What’s the plan for the updated documentation for MDT2013U1?

MDT 2013u1 - Deployment Workbench - Powershell is Required

$

Hello all,

I have MDT 2013 update 1 installed on a Windows server 2012 R2 box and everything has been running flawless for about 8 months now.  Last weekend I installed Microsoft updates on the machine and after rebooting I can't get the Deployment Workbench to open.  When I attempt to open it, I get the following error.

"Powershell is required to use the Deployment Workbench. Please install PowerShell then relaunch Deployment Workbench."

  • I've uninstalled all of the updates one by one, but that did not resolve the issue.
  • I have verified in Roles & Features that PowerShell is installed.
  • Followed the steps in this article: http://sccmguy.com/2012/04/25/mdt-2012-with-server-2012-powershell-initialization-error/

None of the above fixed the issue.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Windows Could not parse or process unattend answer file error installing image from WDS NO UNATTEND FILE

$

We have an image that we uploaded to our WDS server and then loaded onto multiple machines in a lab. Four of those machines keep coming up with this error message:

Windows could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass [specialize]. The settings specified in the answer file cannot be applied. The error was detected while processing settings for component [Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup].

The problem is there is no unattend file attached to the image or any of the images we have. I've tried removing the image and re-uploading it and re-formatting the hard drive, both did not work. Looking for fixes to this very annoying problem.

MDT 2013 - Different settings per task sequence

Hi,

I'm trying to create different settings for different TaskSequenceIDs. For one TS I wanted to join the pc to a workgroup and do SkipApplications=YES and for the other TS I wanted to join a domain and do SkipApplications=NO. But I can't get it to work for some strange reason.

I've tried and tested this solution https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/Different-settings-per-4faa55e9#content but it doesn't work.

I tried this too : http://www.the-d-spot.org/wordpress/2012/07/20/how-to-use-different-settings-per-task-sequence-with-mdt-2012/ but it doesn't work.

Perhaps MDT 2013 acts different then 2012 and 2010???? It would be nice if you could help me out on this one. :-)

can not get WSUS to work with MDT 2013

Hello

As above i have WSUSServer=http://******:8530 (the correct name) setup in my rules.

I have the two tasks for pre application and post application in my task sequence enabled. We have an internal wsus which is delivered by a group policy.

When the windows 7 machine is built im seeing that the downloading and installing updates task's happen but it looks like its from the microsoft server not our internal one.

Im seeing in the registry the correct settings for WUServer and WUStatusServer but not for UseWUserver this should be 1 and not 0.

Any ideas as to why this is not beeing set to use our Internal WSUS?

thanks

Powershell commands do not work

Hi,

I'm trying to get MDT 2013 Update 1 up and running via Microsoft's own documentation, and I can't even start.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/library/mt297533.aspx

Most of the powershell commands aren't working. They just spit out cryptic errors that of little or no use. One particular error is when I am trying to import applications with powershell.

$ApplicationName = "Install - Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 - x86" $CommandLine = "vcredist_x86.exe /Q" $ApplicationSourcePath = "E:\Downloads\VC++2005SP1x86" Import-MDTApplication -Path "DS001:\Applications\Microsoft" -Enable "True" -Name $ApplicationName -ShortName $ApplicationName -Commandline $Commandline -WorkingDirectory ".\Applications\$ApplicationName" -ApplicationSourcePath $ApplicationSourcePath -DestinationFolder $ApplicationName -Verbose

I run these commands one at a time, one per line.

The error is: Import-MDTApplication : Cannot bind parameter 'Path' to the target. Exception setting "Path": "Cannot find path 'C:\Windows\system32\DS001\Applications\Microsoft' because it does not exist."

Googling the error comes up with nothing. The command to create a drive for powershell did work (surprisingly)

New-PSDrive -Name "DS001" -PSProvider MDTProvider -Root "D:\MDTBuildLab"

The path "C:\Windows\System32\DS001\Applications\Microsoft" does not exist on the file system. Should it? There were no instructions to create it at all.

I know zero about powershell, except that it is very difficult to use. I'm just trying to get this set up the way Microsoft suggests. I could create all of these applications manually in the GUI in about 15 minutes. What could be wrong with my (Microsoft's) syntax?

Thanks

Windows 10 will not install

Hi,

I'm trying to create a reference image of Windows 10 Enterprise with MDT 2013 Update 1. I followed the directions here:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/library/mt297533.aspx

When I run the deployment task into my copy of VMware Workstation, Windows fails to install. The image copies over in no time, and goes into first-run settings. After that it reboots a couple of times and tells me it cannot complete the installation. I have logging enabled for the deployment share on the server, but there are no logs. The instructions build a deployment share specifically for creating reference images, so there are no drivers involved. Could that be the problem? Setup doesn't have the drivers for VMware Workstation? I've installed Windows 10 manually into Workstation and it went fine.

How can I try to troubleshoot this problem if I don't have any logs? Googling the error comes up with nothing close to my problem. Is there a way to pull the logs from the failed deployment? Pressing Shift + F10 gives me a command prompt, but I cannot connect to anything to copy/paste the log files from C:\Windows\Panther.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Jason

WMI query: Checking TPM status to install software

$

Maybe someone has already done this. I have two Dell application packages made with Dell Command Configure, one turns on TPM and the other Activates it. I’m trying to set it so that the application will only run if it meets the right condition. I’ve gotten this to work for installing Dell's Command Update, it runs a WMI query for certain models and installs the software if the is that model.

For some reason I just can’t figure out what kind of query to make for TPM. If I make a query from the command line I get “no instance(s) available” if TPM is not on. If TPM is on but not activated it'll return a False answer.

Here's what I have

Dell Enable TPM.
Added the following conditions to this application:

If any conditions are true

WMI namespace:root\cimv2\security\microsofttpm
WMI query:SELECT * FROM Win32_Tpm WHERE IsEnabled_InitialValue IS FALSE

WMI namespace: root\cimv2\security\microsofttpm
WMI query:SELECT * FROM Win32_Tpm WHERE IsEnabled_InitialValue LIKE “%No Instance%”

I'm looking to make the task sequence as hands off as possible so that even if a tech forgot to enable TPM in the BIOS before starting MDT it would enable TPM during the TS but before it attempted to enable BitLocker.

Config Summary -

MDT 2013 Update 1

UEFI Partition layout

Standard Client Task Sequence

Windows 10 Preconfigured WIM file

Question

I am looking for a method for deploying my image to a target computer which will be defined as a new computer, I have the wim file setup the way I need it so I don't need it to run through the admin account. I am new to MDT and I am trying to create a simple solution for my systems.

Can it be done.
