Server 2012 R2 Image build

I never dealt with server 2012 RE image build. We are planning on deploying datacenter, core and standard, building the image with MDT 2013 deploying with SCCM. Do we need to build a wim for each version? or are there better methods / practices?

Thanks

USMT in a mixed user environment

We are moving systems from a Novel network to an AD network.  We are migrating XP to Win7 for the most part.  the XP systems are NOT on the AD domain.

On my XP systems, we have some local users.  Say 'oldmachine\Fred' is the login.  for some of my accounts, we have created a Fred login on the domain, so in AD we have domain\Fred.  But not all of them.  We want to push users to use domain accounts as much as possible, so for those accounts we can use the /MU option and rename those accounts with the domain\Fred name.

My challenge is an XP machine with both oldmachine\Fred and oldmachine\Wilma.  I'm trying to figure out a way to script scan/load state commands so that we backup both Fred and Wilma accounts.  When we restore, it tries to restore both as domain\Fred and Domain\Wilma, but since Wilma is not in the domain, we want a local account recreated for Wilma, so NewMachine\Wilma.

Anyone have any ideas on how this might be done?

Thanks

Hi ,

I have setup Sequence table along with prefix, and a stored procedure to update the computeridentity table, all works fine it updates the sequence number and computer name  BUT

i am unable to get the OSDCOMPUTERNAME set to same name as computeridentity table has when its imaged with windows 7  it always sets to default MINIT-xxx name.

i am using stand alone media created form SCCM 2012.

Please suggest how to get the same machine name as updated in Computeridentity table. any settings to be done on CS.ini ?

Thanks

Unattend.xml settings contained within a revised image

OK, just a question about revising a custom OS install image with a "revised" version 2 if you like. So say I have an image called Image1_March_2015. I have some small settings in there (BGInfo, Windows updates, etc). I apply that image to a VM in order to revise it to a new image called Image1_April_2015. Now, when I apply Image1_March_2015it obviously gets settings applied from the unattend.xml - is this a real problem going forward? How do you guys deal with this dilemma? Do you revert back to a vanilla unattend.xml temporarily?

Settings in Administrator Profile Return to Default After Restarting Master

Hello,

I have question about the behavior of the Administrator profile when rebooting after sysprep.

I set "Smooth edges of screen fonts" to unchecked and changed our default TIF viewer to MODI instead of Windows photo viewer in our master. I captured the image with an MDT Sysprep and Capture TS and deployed. The two settings were as above. I had to make unrelated changes to the image so I turned the master (VM) back on, made the changes and recaptured and deployed. The two setting mentioned above were back to default, Windows Photo Veiwer for TIFs and "Smooth edges of screen fonts" was checked. It seems that these two settings, at least, have to be reset before each capture.

(We have SkipRearm set to 1).

Is this the correct behavior of the Administrator profile after sysprep/capture? I can't find a KB, etc. that describes this.

Thanks.

Is it possible to edit a MDT Task Sequence after starting a deployment, between Hyper-V snapshots?

Using a Hyper-V VM, I take snapshots of my base image build between major sections (automatic updates, application installation, scripts and extras, etc.) with the intention of being able to go back to that area and look at it for troubleshooting's sake.

Each of these snapshots is manually taken during a pause in my MDT task sequence (using LTISuspend).  I would like to be able to roll back to these snaphots make edits to the task sequence (obviously to sections that haven't yet run), then resume and see the changes implemented - but I don't know where the task sequence file(s) resides on VM being imaged, or if that can be changed after kicking it off at the very start of the build.

Is it possible to replace the task sequence file (and any other necessary files) that are cached locally on the VM during the imaging process?  Where are those files located?  Or any other way to implement changes to my task sequence so I wouldn't have to start the image build completely from scratch?

This build takes about 6 hours.  Having to make even the slightest modification causes me to lose an entire day, so this would be golden even if I have to manually edit certain files!

MDT to OEM PC's and Laptops

We have a small PC repair and PC supply shop

Have been using MDT for a couple of years to deploy to new PC's as well as re-image customer PC's and it works fine.

My issue is that when we receive a new OEM UEFI laptop that has been downgraded to Win7 I would like to deploy our custom Win8.1 image then have it find and activate with the embedded Windows 8.1 product key.

If I install from a dvd it works but not from MDT 2013.

Thought that it needed the GPT partitions and fixed that. But it still will not work.

Using LocationServer.xml breaks share credentials

$

I have multiple deployment shares setup (Production, Development, International, etc.) and I am trying to use one boot environment for all. I have followed to the documentation about LocationServer.xml, removing the DeployRoot property from Bootstrap.ini, placed the custom LocationServer.xml in \\Share$\Extra Files\Deploy\Control, added Extra Files to the PE settings, and updated the Deployment Share to create a new iso and wim. When the deployment wizard launches it correctly displays the location wizard with the deployment shares' friendly names in the drop down list. But when I try to connect any share it prompts for credentials, which are defined in the Bootstrap.ini. I cannot find any documentation for how to define the deployment share user credentials within the LocationServer.xml file to automate this portion. If I cannot automate the user credentials, then the LocationServer.xml function is pretty much useless for me.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,

Wayne C.

MDT - The following networking device did not have a driver installed

Using MDT 6 and WDS

x2 different dell laptops E5440 and E7250 using the same nic card - Intel I218-LM

Booting into litetouchpe_x86 wim

get error

The following networking device did not have a driver installed

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_155A&Subsys_0DE2039&REV_04 - E5440

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_15A2&Subsys_062D1028&REV_03 - E7250

Downloaded the drivers from the intel site and loaded im certain the correct drivers I m loading both x86 and x64 as when i look at the inf files it shows

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_155A and PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_15A2 however the subsys number does not match does this matter?

so in MDT i load the drivers into the WinPE folder then updated the share which completes successfully then updated the image in WDS but i still get the error.

Tried using the Dell drivers as well same problem

What am i doing wrong ?

Any help would be great.

Quick update still having the same problem but i went into winpe and opened the .inf from MDT and I do see PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_15A2&SUBSYS_062D1028 in there dont see REV03 not sure if this makes the difference? so the drivers do match in WINPE folder and still getting the same error.

2 boot images

desired scenario:

2 mdt servers on the LAN (during transition/testing of new MDT)

Boot image from functioning MDT is placed on WDS (separate server).

Can I place a boot image from the NEW MDT to the WDS.

I believe it is transparent for PXE server and I should have choice of boot images when pressing F12 on client machine.

Then each image will lead to appropriate MDT.

Doable?

Sccm 2012 SP1 - Error 0x80070002 / 0x80004005

Hello,

First off all sorry for my bad english speaking ! I'll try to be as clear as possible :)

I want to build an image from a basic win7 captured image (that part was already done) adding some apps in a first capture and next (if the first one wanted to work a day...) another capture to run all the updates.

Here a capture of the Build and capture task sequence :

So, the task failed at this step : "Capture the reference Machine".

I've think that it was due to the account used but when I make the "verify" test it is a success.

Here the log (server name replaced by xxxxxxxxxx) :

MDT/WDS Keep installing OS on the wrong disk, can't figure out why ?

Everything in Task Sequence and Unnatend.xml  is set to install to Disk0 parition 1  (as default is)

New Dell PC out of the box comes with two Disks (1 HDD and 1 SSD)

SSD is Disk0 (Checked the motherboard and BIOS to see what disk are what) - 1st Boot priority

HDD is Disk1.

After booting from PXE/WDS and watchng Light Touch Installation progress I SEE it says Preparing Disk0 under the progress bar.

After first reboot it boots to Disk0 as as it should and then it says no boot loader found.

If i go to boot options and Boot from Disk1 it boots to Windows and conttinues with deployment.

If I disconnect Disk1 from motherboard it all installs perfectly.

Why is this happening ?

MDT 2012 U1 task sequence just stops, never finishes

I'm having a problem where a ts gets to the State Restore phase but then just stops, it doesn't throw any errors, doesn't run any of my custom scripts in the State Restore phase and never brings me to the finish screen though I'm using SkipFinalSummary=NO in customsettings.ini.  This ts is deploying Win7 x86.

I had specified the SLShare property set in customisettings.ini but no logs were ending up on the server, I'm assuming because the deployment wasn't finishing, so I've now added the SLShareDynamicLogging property and a bdd.log appeared there.  I've opened it with trace32, no red or yellow lines appear but the last few lines of the log are:

Property PHASE is now = STATERESTORE ZTINextPhase 16-04-2014 2:36:15 PM 0 (0x0000)
ZTINextPhase COMPLETED.  Return Value = 0 ZTINextPhase 16-04-2014 2:36:15 PM 0 (0x0000)

Any help would be appreciated.

MDT 2010 - USB 3.0 issue after OS Install and Inject Drivers steps

$

Hello,

I'm using MDT 2010 and I'm booting and image PCs from a USB drive. On some newer systems (eg: Latitude El530) I have issues when I use the USB 3 ports (if media is connected to USB 2 port, everuthing is fine). The systes recognizes the USB stick and I can start the Task Sequence just fine. I pass the Install OS step and Inject Drivers step, but after the first reboot, I get the prompt to insert the media to continue the deployment. This happens only if the stick is connected to the USB 3.0 ports. If I check Device Manager, I see the USB device withouth driver. The drivers are already on the USB stick...I puled them from FileRepository from an updated system with all the drivers. Is anyone else having similar issues? I see other people have USB 3 issues, but mostlly to start the deployment from it, or at partitioning...I don't have that issue. My issue starts after the OS is installed.

Any sugestion is appreciated...Thank you...

MDT 2012 Server is up and running. I mistakenly deleted a Task Sequence step called "Install Application" that I thought was not needed (I know I should have disabled it and tested).

I have a problem now, when I went to image a computer I did not get application list (This used to work before I deleted the above TS step) with items to check and uncheck for installation.  "Install Application" TS was readded but now when I try to image I get this error:

"The task sequence has been suspended. LiteTouch is trying to install applications. This cannot be performed in Windows PE."

I've tried moving it to different positions on the list (Higher and lower) to no avail, I always get the same error. Please advise.

-Thanks in advance!

Autologon fails after MDT domain join.

I have a Post OS Installation Task setup that I've added theRecover form Domain step to.  I use this TS just to join the PC to our domain.  When I run the TS the PC does join our domain correctly but after the reboot it tells me that the username or password is incorrect.  I'm presented with a logon prompt and the username is set to ".\Administrator".  I simply type in our default local admin password (not changing the username) and the PC logs in and the TS finishes successfully.  What has me confused is I've checked the unattend.xml file and the username and password is correct, although the username is entered as just "Administrator".   I'm pretty sure that the ".\" just refers to the local computer instead of a domain so I don't see what the problem is.  Any suggestions on this one?

Multi-Casting MDT

We are a mid-size school district planning to install linked deployments at 11 sites. We have a flat layer 2 network and we were questioning if the multi-cast option in MDT would be a benefit. Anyone that could provide some insight would be appreciated.

MDT 2012 and DomainJoin

I am trying to understand when MDT 2012 joins the domain during a standard client task sequence if the settings are specified in CustomSettings.ini. In 2012 Beta 1, I had machines joining the domain during the "Recover from Domain" step. After upgrading to 2012 RTM, machines are joining the domain well before that step (even before first logon).

Is this expected behavior and is there an easy way to change it?
