USMT5 - backing up and restoring wifi profiles - W7 and W8

Has anyone noticed with USMT5 that wifi profiles back up correctly (scanstate), i.e. this location, "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\Profiles\Interfaces".

But do not restore (loadstate) correctly. i.e. they restore to this location, "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Wlansvc\MigrationData\Profiles\Interfaces"

MDT 2012 - DaRT 7.0 Integration Issue

$

Hello everyone,

I have successfully configured a new MDT 2012 environment from Release-To-Web versions of MDT. (Clean environment, no remnants of MDT 2010, etc.)

1 - I have copied the DaRT 7.0 Tools.cab file from both an x86 and x64 installation of Windows 7 Enterprise from the tutorial posted here:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/mniehaus/archive/2011/11/28/mdt-2012-new-feature-dart-integration.aspx

I enabled DaRT, updated my boot WIMs, and tried PXE booting to my deployment share. I connect to my deployment share with no issues.

I then open the DaRT toolset from the intro menu.

Problem: The Standalone System Sweeper fails to run. Clicking on it displays "The tool failed to run. Try choosing another tool." The only option is to click OK and takes you back to the main DaRT menu selection.

Tests I have performed so far: For kicks and giggles, I have also rebuilt the boot WIMs with all of the contents from (Admin PC's hard drive) C:\Program Files\Microsoft DaRT 7\v7\ folder into the X:\DeploymentShare\Tools\(x64 or x86)\ . I thought "Sweeper.cab" might do it, but no success.

Also, I know DaRT is partially working. Remote Connection starts automatically when the PC is booted to WinPE. I also know my DaRT media is not corrupted because I was able to generate a DaRT.iso image on my admin PC, extract the .WIM from the ISO and PXE boot that with NO issues. (Everything in that DaRT media works without issues, which leads me to believe it is something in MDT 2012.)

FYI, if it helps any, the "Version.txt" file from the DaRT 7.0 installation says: 7.0.291.0

I have my scratch space on my WinPE media set to "128"

My WAIK version is 7.1 (7.0 with SP1 Supplement)

Also to the MDT 2012 team: Thanks, this version is much more polished out-of-box versus the 2010 initial release. I don't have to use extra scripts to clean up the "dirty" environment at the end of a Task Sequence anymore (it just works now), and I don't get the odd partitioning scheme that 2010 used (BitLocker reasons). So, thumbs up!!!

Thanks,
stealthfield

Dell driver import problem

MDT 2010

Trying to package up NIC drivers for the Dell models:  Latitude E4300/E4310/6400/6410 and Precision M4400/4500.  I've downloaded the drivers (R244198 and R267025) and extracted them into separate folders. When I point MDT to those folders for importing, I get a bunch of errors.

No other drivers have this problem. Can anyone else confirm? Anyone know of a fix (other than wait for Dell to provide updated/fixed drivers)?

Thanks

Thanks,

Local GPO - User Configuration Export. Please Advise.

Hello, we are moving from Ghost to MDT. We have one machine that is NOT joined to the domain and has 3 accounts. I'd like to export the policies for a given "local (kiosk)" account. Can I do that even if I am not logged on as the "kiosk" account. I noticed the "User Policies" are different if I were to log on as "administrator" vs "kiosk" account.

Can someone please guide me in the right direction? I am continuing my search on Google as well.

MDT 2013 Driver Import Failure

This has been happening on every version of MDT that ever existed.  Never found a solution. Newer versions of MDT have been failing more frequently. Now it fails every single time:

It appears MDT is no longer supporting drivers of any kind.

Capture thick image and redeploy does not log on automatically as local admin

$

Hi all,

I realize that there are some issues with capturing a thick image that's domain joined, but I am trying to see if there are suitable solutions for what I am trying to achieve.

I am making a thick image for deployment to over 200 desktops. The image is then deployed with multicast (which fast). Some of the software I am installing, in order to configure it correctly, requires it to be domain joined.

Thus, I have a base reference image (built using a separate TS), I have a deployment share and TS that builds the thick image and captures that and then a third deployment share actually deploys the thick image and does a few small things that don't like being cloned.

The issue I run into is that after deploying the OS, the TS isn't logging on automatically as local Administrator. Instead, on the Windows logon, it shows <DOMAIN>\Administrator. When I log on manually as .\Administrator, the TS picks up and finishes successfully.

So, ideally, there is some smart workaround that would make it possible for the TS to logon as .\Administrator instead of getting stuck trying to log on as DOMAIN\Administrator...

When I used to run sysprep manually (using my previous deployment technology), sysprep removed the machine from the domain and it just got rejoined using the unattend file. This seems to be happening, because the machines are joined to the domain with their new names.

I haven't verified it, but it seems as simple as there not being a correct domain name set in the registry key for autologons?

I know I could try the alternative of installing the software, capture the image and in the actual deployment attempt to configure it, but there are some many dependent pieces of software that I wouldn't really have the thick image I am after.

Thanks for any suggestions,

SA.

Cannot run BGInfo in Windows PE set in TS

$

I try to add BGInfo to the Windows PE background, which is only used to install new computers from an USB drive. I have tried several things without success:

- using a ExtraFiles folder in deployment root folder, and adding the folder in Windows PE settings in MDT. Then copied relevant files to that folder (BGInfo64.exe and the .bgi file and a custom .vbs script for sorting IP's). Also tried to add files to subfolder in the ExtraFiles folder (Windows\System32\)

- In Task Sequence in MDT 2012 I then add a Run Command under Initialization. I have tried several paths in here:
%DeployRoot%\...
X:\Windows\System32\...
E:\Windows\System32\...

Also tried adding the files to Scripts folder and the call them with the %ScriptRoot% path.

So my question is, how can I run BGInfo64.exe in Windows PE during Initialization using MDT 2012? I would prefer not to introduce the unattend.xml file for this. I am trying to keep most settings in the MDT Task Sequence and the customsettings.ini file.

Hi
i have SCCM 2012R2 up and running and wanted to integrate it with MDT 2013.
Just out of curiosity, once MDT has been installed, do we really need to download and install WAIK?

What is the benefit of having it in MDT? i can see under MDT Components the status is: Required.

Thanks, M@

Making my first attempt to capture user state and keep running into the same error. I'm following the sample in the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit Samples Guide that I downloaded with MDT 2013. Any hints on where to look for the cause of this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I am trying to create a reference WIM image of Windows 8.1. I would like to embed some security updates in the image. How can i do that? In which node i need to add the Updates and how can i use in task sequence. Please help.

MDT 2013, wim, invalid

don't know where to start really, here goes

we have ben using sccm 2012 r2 but had no end of issues most of all the 02 error when trying to image just errors out randomly with no reason nothing in solawinds monitoring etc.

So I have decided to try MDT 2013 then push the sccm client out as a application....this is where ive started to run into issues MDT side, the images I have made in sccm wim files MDT doesn't like when I go to add them into WDS I get the following error"The file does not contain a valid install image"

I have made sure the location where the image are currently and the destination has sufficient right to allow adding images....I can confirm the images do work they have worked in sccm on deployment when this hasn't been giving me the run around bombing out.

so fellow IT people do you have any advise for me or is it something to do with the images set to sccm?

Anyone has experience building Kiosk image using MDT?

Does anyone have any tips or ideas to share for building a Kiosk image using MDT?

This machine will have a "kiosk" user and would like to have local GPO's restrict access to desktop etc. for"kiosk" user only.

If i sysprep and capture, I have read that it doesn't take over the "user configuration"policies that have been set. Any help is appreciated.

MDT 2012 U1 LTI Format incorrect partition

Hi, everyone:

I recently  update for xp to Win7 use MDT 2012 Update 1. Everything looks can be, but except for some individual strange question.

Details are follows:
The original xp partition C: is Primary partition, also system disk; other is extended partition, including D and E drive.
After performing MDT task sequence (disabled "format and partition disk" step for only format C:),  this machine D drive formatted and put wim applied to the D drive.

On xp running wmic results are as follows:

 C:\>wmic path win32_diskpartition get bootable,bootpartition,caption,description

Bootable  BootPartition  Caption                Description
          FALSE          Disk #0, Partition #0  Extended w/Extended Int 13
TRUE      TRUE           Disk #0, Partition #1  Installable File System

diskpart:

DISKPART> list part

  Partition ###  Type              Size     Offset
  -------------  ----------------  -------  -------
  Partition 1    Primary             24 GB    32 KB
  Partition 2    Extended           125 GB    24 GB
  Partition 3    Logical             49 GB    24 GB
  Partition 4    Logical             76 GB    73 GB

Finally, I found that if  the disk 0,partition #1 is C driver, the task  sequence will fail.

Anyone have a solution?  Thanks.

howdy,

so, I am running mdt 2013 and attempting to image some asus t100 tablets over a local network with a customised windows 8.1 using usb NICs.  however once the boot image has finished loading, all usb devices stop working (keyboard dock and NIC) and I receive an error stating: "no networking devices were found on this machine!"

all drivers I can find are injected into the image.

cheers

Tasks based on Chassis Type

I have a lot of conditional installations and configurations in my task sequence so that I can apply a sequence to many different types of machines. Such as checking to see if a machine is touch capable and then using DISM to import application associations as one example. In the picture below I added a condition to check if a machine is a desktop and then overwrite the file associations so that desktop apps will be the default even if it is touch capable. However when it comes to All-in-One computers, they report as a chassis type of 13. You can find the SystemEnclosure class here. I plan on editing the ZTIGather.wsf file (code located below) and simply adding 13 to the desktop list. I assume that's all that is needed but wanted to have any other MDT gurus weigh in with their thoughts on it.

' Get the SMBIOS asset tag from the Win32_SystemEnclosure class

		Set objResults = objWMI.InstancesOf("Win32_SystemEnclosure")
		bIsLaptop = false
		bIsDesktop = false
		bIsServer = false
		For each objInstance in objResults

MDT 2013 - All User Exit scripts fail with - "Unable to parse the user exit script file: Invalid character (1032)"

While attempting to implement the computer naming UserExit script technique found here:

blog.primaryschooltech.co.uk/2013/02/mdt-naming-trick-show-machines-existing.html

and here:

social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a59e16f9-16e3-44cf-9e33-85bf6c16ecfe/mdt-and-computer-name?forum=mdt

I found the scripts failing to run with the error "Unable to parse the user exit script file:  Invalid character (1032)".

After much troubleshooting I discovered I am unable to execute any script via the UserExit script option in CustomSettings.ini.  All scripts fail with the exact same error regardless of content or deployment share.

Easiest Ways To Update Offline Media?

We normally use PXE boot and deploy images across the network even though is seems slower since many computers are on a 100Mb connection due to sharing their network port with a 100Mb VOIP phone. We do this for convenience mostly because of the big hassle of updating multiple flash drives whenever the image or task sequence is updated.

We could use multicast if we were doing many simultaneous deployments of the same image, but the majority of the time, we are reimaging one-off machines one or two at a time.

However, I just saw some hardware and software that seems like it could make using offline media more manageable if they were used together.

Instead of copying the Content folder manually one stick at at a time to USB flash media, is there any reason you cannot just mass clone multiple copies of the LiteTouchMedia.iso file to multiple bootable usb drives using ImageUSB http://www.osforensics.com/tools/write-usb-images.html and a USB hub like this?

This software copies the ISO as if burning a DVD.  It does not copy the Contents folder files the way you would manually create USB media for MDT.

If this works, then updating as many USB sticks as we can get on a hub wouldn't be much more difficult than just updating one USB stick.

WinPe Resolution Issue

Hello everyone! I have an issue where WinPE even the "loading files" progress bar that appears before PE is loaded show off screen... It looks as though WinPE is showing an image larger than the resolution but this only affects my Lenovo machines (ThinkPad W530, W540, S431). If I PXE boot my Dell machines (M6500, M6600) the PE environment fits fine on the screen. Resolution in Windows after deployment is also fine on both my models (Lenovo and dell) its only PE that gives me an issue on Lenovo hardware. Any ideas? Is this an issue with PXE on UEFI hardware from Lenovo? Also to note if I use my old MDT 2012 share the PE environment loads fine on my Lenovo hardware. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! :)
