MDT2013 - USB Install Error

Hi Guys.

I've been using USB sticks with the MDT image on them to image PC's for quite a while and have never had any problems, however since i have upgraded to MDT 2013 and have updated the media content none of the USB sticks will work.

I can boot into them and it looks as though it is going to load into the setup window, however it then just comes up with a blue screen saying that the PC ran into a problem and giving the error: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

Nothing has changed on the deployment share apart from it being upgraded.

Any help.

Cheers.

MDT installation and random failures

We have MDT 2012 Update 1 x64 and we use MDT to install new machines. MDT is installed to virtual machine running Windows Server 2012 (hypervisor is also Windows Server 2012) We boot machines with PXE and start task sequence from there. Randomly MDT task sequence fails on some computers and few or more random applications wont install. We just start installation again and usually then it goes without errors.

When I open BDD.log it contains these errors:

WARNING - unable to set working directory:  (-2147024832)ZTIApplications11.3.2014 13:12:380 (0x0000)

Error installing application Microsoft Office 2010 ProPlus 32-bit ENG: The specified network name is no longer available.
ZTIApplications11.3.2014 13:12:380 (0x0000)

Any idea what could be causing this?

Cannot connect to deployment share due to LAN driver not being installed

Hello.

I have just received a Lenovo T510 laptop. I am trying to load an WinXp x86 image on the machine from MDT 2010.

I boot from the network, everything is fine, it loads the Litetouch WinPE x86 wim and it boots into winPE displays my custom background and gives me the first screen, Run Deployment Wizard - Run Windows Recovery - Command Prompt - etc etc.. When I run the Deployment wizard it says " A connection to the deployment share (\\...) could not be made. The deployment will not proceed. The following networking device did not have a driver installed. PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_10EA&SUBSYS_215317AA&REV_06"

Now I have tried every driver I could find for this network card from win7 to vista to xp.. 32bit to 64bit. I have updated my deployment share many times (Completely regenerate the boot images.) and still nothing.

Has anybody encountered this? I cannot seem to find anything that applies to my senario, and if they do, it does not seem to work for me.

Any help would be overly appreciated.

Deploying Windows XP using MDT 2012

Hi All,

I have wasted a lot of time on this and having no luck. I am trying to deploy Windows XP via MDT 2012 and the MDT database. I have installed WAIK and MDT 2012.

I have done the following:

  1. Setup a Deployment share
  2. Imported the Operating System
  3. Imported the drivers
  4. Setup a Task Sequence (Although I suspect some of my issues may stem from here)
  5. Created a Media
  6. Connected a database

What I ultimately would like to do is have an image on a CD/DVD that can be used to image new PC's. I would like the Image to refer to the MDT database and extract information such as: Hostname, Domain information and the local admin username and password. I have seen this configuration working via BDD.

I am confused as to how to setup the "rules" for media or deployment share and how to tell it to reference the database and tables to get the specific information. Can anyone help with this?

Windows RE - Custom refresh and reset options? Integration into MDT?

Hi Everyone!

I'm looking for some documentation or examples for deploying custom WinRE reset and refresh images inside of Windows 8.1.  I understand the basic premise of customizing WinRE, but I'm hoping to see some examples in action inside of MDT.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

windows boot manager error-mdt pxe boot

$

We are using MDT 2012 and recently we are experiencing a problem when network booting. We are attempting to image 64 bit machines. We start the PXE process, it's assigned an IP address and then we get an error message stating that the Windows Boot Manager has an error. Either a file is missing or corrupt. The odd thing is that if we use the x86 boot image it will boot fine.

Forgive me for being somewhat dumb here, but is it ok to use the x86 boot image for a 64 bit machine? Or better yet can someone offer some suggestions into getting the 64 bit working. I have the properties tab checked to run on x86 or x64 platform.

One other note, I attempted to update the deployment share by rebuilding the boot image. I was watching the log as it ran and noticed that it stated "no x64 boot image found and it would create one". This is odd because I did this before and moved the image to WDS.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bob

MDT - Using TaskSequenceID with Desktop-True or Laptop-True

$

I have now modified this to the following.

I am having an issue with MDT TaskSequenceID with Desktop-True or Laptop-True.

Scope: Three TaskSequenceID e.g. [WIN7x86], [WIN7x64], [WINXPx86] to contain all settings but use [Desktop-True] to apply a workstation to a Desktop OU or [Laptop-True] to a Laptop OU (exempt [WINXPx86] which contains the OU information within its own TS).

If the OU is specified directly under the TS [WIN7] everything works fine so the user account/password and path are correct. I can see MDT is pulling the correct TS as well.

When I add into the mix the following the system will not attach to the domain..

[WIN7x86]
SkipDomainMembership=YES
NetworkLocation=Work
JoinDomain=removed
DomainAdmin=svc_mdtjoin
DomainAdminPassword=removed

[ByDesktop]
Subsection=Desktop-%IsDesktop%

[ByLaptop]
Subsection=Laptop-%IsLaptop%

[Desktop-True]
MachineObjectOU=ou=Desktops,ou=Windows7,DC=removed,DC=uk

[Laptop-True]
MachineObjectOU=ou=Laptops,ou=Windows7,DC=removed,DC=uk

The BDD.log shows it see the workstation (Dell OptiPlex 7010 as a Desktop).

The ZTIDomainJoin.log is showing it is ‘attempting’ to add to the correct OU as well.

Initial attempt: JoinDomain(,PWD,\,ou=Desktops,ou=Windows7,DC=removed,DC=uk,3), rc = 2

The system is not anywhere in Active Directory.
I can log onto AD Users and Computers as svc_mdtjoin and add the computer manually.

My settings at the start are:

[Settings]
Priority=TaskSequenceID,ByLaptop,ByDesktop,DefaultGateway,Model,Default
Properties=MyCustomProperty

Any ideas??

Thanks.”

Windows XP Image Deployment - Password Problem

$

Hi All,

We have Windows XP image for deployment.

The task sequence deploys the image to a workstation but have two problems.

1)

The Administrator password... You cannot log into Windows with the password set for the 'local Administrator account. This has been set at the time of adding the Operating system and is enabled.

It has also been set in customsettings.ini and also in the unattended.txt... No avail. Has something been missed?

The machine can add to the domain and be accessed via a domain username and password...

2)

Windows Firewall appears to stay on. In a Windows 7 deployment this would be changed in the unattended.xml, where is the setting in Windows XP?

Thanks in advance.

Copying Drivers From One MDT to Antother

I'm setting up MDT 2013 on a brand new 2012 R2 server. I'd like to copy some of the drivers from my older MDT 2012 server if I can. From what I can see, there's not really an easy way to do this. The view from the Out-of-Box-Drivers section doesn't match with the underlying folder structure in the file system. Has anyone found a creative way to do this?

MDT 2012 Sysprep and Installation Failure

$

A few days ago I tried to install a clean windows 7 installation with updates on a dell optiplex 3010,

it gave a failure and after that I didn't think much of it anymore
The next day i tried to install another 3010 and got the same error

Windows could not parse or process the unattended answer file for pass [specialize]. The setting specified in the answer file cannot be applied. The error was detected while processing settings for component [Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup].

Since I am fairly new to MDT I am clueless, I went to c:/windows/panther/unattendedgc and

got this log.

DomainOUList.xml correct usage

I am using MDT 2012. I have implemented the DomainOUList.xml in my control folder of my deployment share. The first code snippet works fine. When I try the second, I get the following error when selecting the OU: "Invalid OU format (must start with OU=)"

Am I missing something? Can you not make the OU a value to be able to use a cleaner display name?

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><DomainOUs><DomainOU>OU=XP Computers,DC=domain,DC=com</DomainOU></DomainOUs>

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><DomainOUs><DomainOU value="OU=XP Computers,DC=domain,DC=com">XP Computers</DomainOU></DomainOUs>

Issues Capturing Sysprepped Image to WDS Server on Hyper-V Virtual Machine

$

I am creating an image for our company of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and decided to use a Hyper-V Virtual Machine to create the image.  I successfully set up a fresh copy of Windows 7, sysprepped it and have it all ready to be captured to a WDS server.  My problem is that I cannot get this VM to boot to the Legacy Network Adapter--it is set as the first device in the boot order but gets skipped and goes straight to the OS (which then forces me to redo my sysprep on the VM).

I tested the WDS PXE boot process by creating a new fresh VM and choosing to boot from the Legacy Network Adapter--that VM was able to boot to the network adapter just fine.  So I can PXE boot new VM's just fine and image them using WDS with no issues.

I should also mention that the WDS server is currently a VM that sits on the same Hyper-V host machine as the VM I am attempting to capture.

I'm confused and frustrated as to why I cannot boot the sysprepped VM up to the Legacy Network Adapter.  Are you only able to PXE boot to the Legacy Network Adapter on the initial set up of the virtual hard disk?

My fallback plan is use an iso of WinPE, boot the sysprepped VM to that and use imagex to capture.  Before I go that route, I want to find out if I am missing something to get this VM booting to the Legacy Network Adapter successfully.

Deploy Windows XP Embedded using MDT?

Is there a way to deploy Windows XP Embedded (XPe) using MDT? If so, I could use step-by-step guidance on how to do so.

Currently we created the XPe wim file from our XPe computer but when we import it to the Deployment Share it is not recognized.

Assign MachineName via table lookup in unattended install?

$

I am trying to create the "master image" for machines used for testing in one of our labs. The lab is isolated and not domain joined. What I'm missing is a way to intelligently and automatically assign machine names. I'm looking for something I can do either with the Unattended.xml or at first reboot that will set the machine name based on a lookup of some unique identifier (MAC address of eth0 for example). That way when "Machine_546" gets re-imaged, it will still be called "Machine_546".

I'm creating the answers file with Microsoft System Image Manger.

Any suggestions, or better yet proven solutions, would be appreciated.

Localize Windows 8.1 with unattend.xml

Greetings,

     I am using mdt 2013 with sccm 2012 R2 to deploy windows 8.1. I wish to localize it to en-AU.

   I have created a package with the unattend.xml file and specified that file in my "apply operating system image" task sequence step. I used windows SIM to add the "international-core" to my answer file and specified InputLocale, SystemLocale, UILanguage and UserLocale as en-AU.

  When I deploy this task sequence it ignores my settings and installs the default en-US.

  Exactly how does one localize a Windows 8.1 installation using the unattend file?

Thanks

MDT Windows 7 Deployment Task With Laptop Lids Closed?

Has anyone done this before?

How can this be done with a cart like this since the lids must be closed for them to fit?

We plan to reimage laptops while they are stored in a cart and connected to two 16 port switches.

The laptops are vPro capable, so once they are initially provisioned, we will be able to boot them outside of windows and remote control and view their screens through a VNC KVM viewer.  Maybe there is a 30 port physical USB KVM switch with video we could use with a single keyboard, mouse and small monitor or else a laptop?

Unable to find the SMS Task Sequence. The deployment will not proceed.

Hi,

After one week to work about my problem, I ask help !

I use MDT 2013 on Win 2012 R2 with WDS on Win 2012 R2.

I work, in this case, with Win 7 x64 as OS client OS.

I use VMWare to create my reference wim images.

I use my wim images to deploy new VMs and new PCs

Today I get an error when the PC reboot after installing devices :

Unable to find the SMS Task Sequence. The deployment will not proceed.

I'm not sure about what change between before and after : many things ! (OS (with WSUS Updates), Drivers, LiteTouch.wim, ...)

But I found something strange.

1) My deployments work fine if there is no formatted partition.

2) My deployments work fine if I deploy a VM (with no diag partition) if the VM is new or already with an OS

When I look my log files, in the litetouch.log, I found that the the DeployRoot is empty when the deployment fails and is \\PBCMDT.Cabinet-Besse.net\MDTProd$ when it succeeds.

I always use install operating system task sequence with : Use the next available formatted partition. In my build task sequence and in my prod task sequence.

I use a task sequence format and partition disk standard : disk 0, MBR, Create extra active partition and OSDisk (primary) 100% remaining space on disk in the build task sequence

I use the same parameters with the prod task sequence when the WMI Query report that I work with VMWare

I use a personal script in the format and partition disk with the prod task sequence when the WMI Query report that I work with Dell. This script use diskpart to delete partition 3 and 2 and create two new partitions (with the right size) leaving the hidden diags partition.

Could you help me ?
One week it is a very long duration to repair MDT !

Ludovic.
