Trying to understand MDT2012 Multi-Cast

I'm trying to use MDT 2012 from Server 2008R2 to image about 50 computers (volunteering at kids school)

CONFIGURATION

Server 2008R2

MDT 2012 integrated with WDS

Clients are Windows 7

HP Procurve V1910-48 Gigabit Switch with IGMP Level 3 Snooping enabled (and no multi-cast broadcast limits)

Everything works wonderfully when Uni-casting the images to the PC's but, when you unicast 50 PC's the time to image all 50 is roughly 2 hours.

We enabled the share for Multi-Casting in MDT

and WDS shows Multicast Transmissions -> MDT Share Deployment$  when you right mouse click properties it shows Autocast and Active

But, no sessions show up in WDS.

In the event log on the server there are 2 error messages for each connection

First error

I have MDT 2012 Update 1. Is it possible to get task sequences and applications alphabetically ordered automatically?

MDT 2012 Update 1 crashed

My computer (Windows 7 Professional with SP1 x64) with MDT 2012 Update 1 was used for applications deployment (two Post OS Installation TS) to computers with preinstalled Windows 7 Professional with SP1 OS (x86/x64). It crashed last week. Yesterday I installed brand new virtual machine (Windows 7 Professional with SP1 x64) and today I am going to install MDT 2012 Update 1 on it. I have backup of deployment share folders (I had two) from crashed machine and also I took screenshoot of share and NTFS permissions set up on them. New machine has different name. What has to be done on new machine in order to everything works as it used to work on my crashed machine.

Thanks in advance!!!

MDT 2013 Windows 2012 R2 and PowerShell

Hi,

I installed my new MDT server with :
  Windows 2012 R2 (with native powershell V4)
  ADK 8.1
  MDT 2013

When I generate my Generix WinPE and my LiteTouch image I don't have the powershell.

Powershell is well cheked in the feature to add.

The output from the update deployment share is strange because I can read :

=== Processing Generic (x86) boot image ===

Building requested boot image profile.
Determining if any changes have been made in the boot image configuration.
No existing boot image profile found for platform x86 so a new image will be created.
Calculating hashes for requested content.
Changes have been made, boot image will be updated.
Windows PE WIM C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\x86\en-us\winpe.wim will be used.
WIM file mounted.
Set Windows PE system root.
Set Windows PE scratch space.
Added component winpe-hta
Added component winpe-scripting
Added component winpe-wmi
Added component winpe-mdac
Added component winpe-netfx
Added component winpe-powershell

and after ...

=== Processing Generic (x64) boot image ===

Building requested boot image profile.
Determining if any changes have been made in the boot image configuration.
No existing boot image profile found for platform x64 so a new image will be created.

Set Windows PE scratch space.
Added component winpe-hta

Added component winpe-powershell3

Why is it not the same name for powershell or netfx in x86 and x64 architecture ?

It works with x86 Generic WinPE, not with x64 Generic WinPE.
It works with x86 Lite Touch, not with x64 Lite Touch.

Thank you for your help.

Ludovic.

MDT 2012 USMT 3.01 XP to XP Replace

$

Greetings.

I deployed the MDT 2012 Update1 with Database, but without SCCM.

and I'm trying to do a user capture and restore with an XP to XP OS replace.

the followings are the steps I tested:

1. I have installed USMT 3.01 on a WinXP computer, copy the installed files in C:\Program Files\USMT301 to the MDT server's DeployShare\Tools\x86\USMT3.

2. I set the Rule settings as following:

    [Default]
    USMT3=YES
    ScanStateArgs=/v:5 /o /c
    LoadStateArgs=/v:5 /c /lac
    USMTOfflineMigration=False
    UserDataLocation=Network
    UDShare=\\MDTServer\MigDataShare
    UDDir=%ComputerName%

3. I created 2 task sequences, the 1st is "Standard Client Replace Task Sequence" to capture the state of a demo computer. the 2nd is "Standard Client Task Sequence" to deploy new computer and restore the captured state.

4. I start WinPE and use the 1st task sequence to capture the state of a demo computer. it's success. and it create the  folders as following:

     - MigDataShare
       +--DemoComputerName
         +--USMT
            +-- USMT.MIG

    the USMT.MIG is the file of the captured state.

5. I start a new VM with WinPE and use the 2nd task sequence. and specify the restore location to \\MDTServer\MigDataShare\DemoComputerName.
  every steps are running well until it restore the user state.  and finally,  it return the following warning:

    " No user state folder (USMT3) found at\\MDTServer\MigDataShare\DemoComputerName, unable to restore user state. "

 I think it's something wrong on set the MDT 2012 to use USMT3.01. maybe the captured state should in USMT3 folder or the file should be name as USMT3.mig.

but I don't know how to resolve it. hope you help.

Thank you!

LiteTouch has encountered and Environment Error (Boot into WinPE!)

$

After updating to update1 RTM and regenerating my deployment share, some task sequences that were previously successful prior to update1 rtm now throw up a dialog:

The task sequence has been suspended.

LiteTouch has encountered and Environment Error (Boot into WinPE!)

OK to Reboot

Nothing on the deployment share was changed after the update1. I’ve read the “environment error” post here and not really tripping across anything that’s helping me. Something in the winpe in update1 has changed things for me, but that same winpe is successful on some of my task seqs. Strange. Worth noting that when it throws the message on a specific machine the x86 and x64 both will throw it.

Help with custom scripts

$

Some background, I am working with MDT, installing Windows 7 32bit, installing/testing in Virtualbox.

The main issue I am having right now is running custom scripts. The install of the OS seems to all go fine, until it gets to the point where it is supposed to run my first custom script it errors out. Reading through the error message it says "The system cannot find the file specified. (Error:00000002; Source Windows).

I have created an additional TS for a post OS install of the script to see if it would work that way and I get the same error. I CAN run the script successfully by opening it.

In the TS the custom tasks are under State restore, and I have the file location path (which is a folder called custom in the deployment share) in the command line.

Any ideas/help??

Thanks!

Language of Modern Apps changed after Deployment

$

Hi,

after deploying a Windows 8.1 Pro Image with MDT 2013 all the in-built apps have their language changed for all users. Before i do a Capture and Sysprep Task Sequence i can see that all the apps are in the "native" language (german) but when i take the captured .WIM and do a standard deployment task sequence with it, the language of all the apps change to english - and i haven't find a way to revert this yet.

so how can i prevent this language change that happens during deployment or how can i revert it afterwards? the other regional settings are fine and are correctly set as specified in the deployment properties - it's only the modern apps that are wrong...

thanks!

AppInstall.exe erroring after build and UDI components left behind

$

This is on a SCCM2012 and MDT 2012. I build a server task sequence with UDI .  After the build, I get AppInstall.exe errors on the newly built server (running c:\Windows\UDI\AppInstall.exe).  There is an entry in the HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run to start AppInstall.exe.

What steps did I miss to clean this up?
Do I need to manually clean this up after the task sequence?

MDT 2012 WinPE 4.0 802.1x Support

I am trying to get 802.1x support working to deploy windows 7-8 machines using MDT2012.  I have checked IEEE 802.1x network authenication protocol under features of the deployment share properties.  I am trying to follow the guide on the deploymentguys. I have my files on the boot image and can do a net start dot3svc, we are not using certificates at the moment for our 802.1x so I am skipping that line.  doing a netsh lan add profile filename="X:\8021x\ Local Area Connection.xml " interface="Ethernet2" does work.  I am having a problem with the third step when I run the following command netsh lan set eapuserdata filename=x:\8021x\Wired-WinPE-UserData-PEAP-MSChapv2.xml allusers=yes interface="Ethernet2"  All i get is error setting user data for interface ethernet2, the operation is not supported.

How does one get 802.1x working in WinPE 4.0?

Adding 802.1x to the winPE image

I am having problems adding the 972831 hotfix package to my boot.wim winpe image.

I've tried running the MSU with the /o option to which I get the "This does not apply to your Operating System" message.

Using DISM to add the package ends in "An error occured applying the unattend.xml file from the .msu package." when applying the MSU. If I extract and apply the cab file directly, I get WinPE-Dot3Svc-Package-TopLevel Error: 0x80073713.

I am trying to apply this to a winPE image version 6.1.7600.16385

What am I doing wrong?

Modify LiteTouch CustomSettings.ini/vbs/wsf to skip repartitioning task

$

I have been given a bootable USB stick that contains a LiteTouch deployment that we are using for our Win7 migrations. I have also been investigating USMT hardlink backups/restores and my problem is that the LiteTouch deployment has a task in there that repartitions and wipes the drive.

While I am unable to modify the tasks via LiteTouch / MDT, I am able to modify the contents of the USB stick, so I thought perhaps there is something I can put in the CustomSettings.ini to prevent this step from happening. I added:

DeploymentType=REFRESH
OSDStateStorePath=c:\backup
OSDMigrateAdditionalRestoreOptions=/nocompress /hardlink

thinking that the DeploymentType being refresh would instruct the deployment to not do a repartition/wipe, but that didn't work.

The USB has an autorun.inf which calls upon BDD_autorun.wsf, which in turn executes the LiteTouch.vbs script. I tried modifying that to pass in the DeploymentType flag:

If oShell.Popup( WelcomeMessage1 & vbNewLine & WelcomeMessage2, 15, WelcomeHeader1, 1 or 64) = 1 then
    oShell.Run "cscript.exe //nologo """ & WScript.ScriptFullName & "\..\LiteTouch.vbs /DeploymentType:REFRESH""",,FALSE
End if

but that too failed.

Does anyone know how or what can modify to prevent the repartitioning step to occur by just modifying the CustomSettings.ini, or any vb/wsf file?

thanks,
