DISM.EXE error while applying unattend.xml during LTI deployment with MDT 2013 - Reproducible bug

$

The problem I am about to describe doesn't exist with MDT 2010 update 1, MDT 2012, or MDT 2012 update 1 when using the either WAIK or ADK.  I have not attempted to reproduce this problem with older versions of MDT or pre-release versions of MDT 2013.  The problem definitely exists with MDT 2013 RTM.

This is the same problem as Inconsistent DISM.EXE error when applying unattend.xml during LTI deployment - Possible bug!, but this is more concise and provides details on how to reproduce the problem.

Status as of 2013-11-18 (Workaround Found - core bug still present)

Keith Garner determined that DISM.EXE was failing while processing an unrelated, unnecessary section in the unattend.xml file.  Removing this section resolves the issue,  The presence of this section didn't cause problems with previous releases of MDT/ADK - it is likely an interoperability bug within the DISM.EXE tool.  See replies below for details.

Problem:

When deploying Windows 7 Pro x64 w/SP1 and enabling/disabling features using unattend.xml, deployment often (almost 100% of the time) fails with this dialog:

Steps to reproduce ("bare-metal"):

  1. Create a new, clean virtual machine (I used VMware Workstation)
  2. Boot the VM with the Windows 7 x64 Pro w/SP1 Volume Licensing DVD
  3. Install Windows with default options, OOBE choices:
    • User name = Tony
    • Computer name = Tony-PC
    • Password = tony
    • Windows Update = recommend settings
    • Time zone = Eastern
    • Location  = Work network
  4. Install VMware Tools and reboot
  5. Configure Internet Explorer using express settings
  6. Configure Windows Update to get updates for other Microsoft products
  7. Apply all available Windows Updates*
  8. Install ADK for Windows 8.1 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39982)
    • Installs .NET Framework 4.5 automatically
    • Accept all default installation choices
  9. Install MDT 2013 x64 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40796)
    • Accept all default installation choices
  10. Apply all available Windows Updates again*

*When installing Windows Updates:

  • Select all important updates, except Internet Explorer 11
  • Select all optional updates, except Bing Bar, Bing Desktop, Security Essentials, and Silverlight.

Launch MDT Workbench:

  1. Create a new deployment share
    • Accept all defaults:  C:\DeploymentShare, DeploymentShare$, etc.
  2. Import Operating System:
    • Full set of source files
    • Source Directory = CD drive containing the Windows 7 x64 Pro w/SP1 Volume Licensing DVD.
    • Accept remaining defaults
  3. Create a new task sequence:
    • ID = Test
    • Name = Test
    • Template = Standard Client Task Sequence
    • OS = Windows 7 Professional
    • Key = Do not specify at this time
    • Settings:
      • Full name = Tony
      • Organization = Tony
      • IE Home Page = about:blank
    • Admin password = tony
  4. Update Deployment Share, and completely regenerate the boot images.

From another new, clean virtual machine:

  1. Boot from the "C:\DeploymentShare\Boot\LiteTouchPE_x64.iso" file from MDT computer.
  2. Run the Deployment Wizard, and enter credentials (tony, tony, . )
  3. Launch the created Task Sequence (accept defaults, click keep clicking ‘next’):
    • Computer name = autogenerated
    • Join a workgroup = WORKGROUP
    • Do not move user data and settings
    • Do not restore user data  and settings
    • Locale and time = accept defaults
    • Do not capture an image

At this point, the deployment will succeed every time.

Now, edit the task sequence and edit the unattend.xml:

  1. Add the Foundation Package to the answer file
  2. Edit the foundation Package:
    • Disable MediaPlayback > MediaCenter
  3. Save file and close task sequence.

Deploy the task sequence again using the directions above (for each attempt, I used a new, unused VM), and it will fail nearly every time!

Notes:

  • Enabling/Disabling features via unattended.xml is a supported and documented process.
  • I suspect a bug with DISM.EXE v6.3 while operating on Windows 6.1 images.
  • I realize that adding"Install Roles and Features" and/or "Uninstall Roles and Features" task sequence items may be a workaround for this problem (I haven't tried it), but it is not asolution to the problem.

Problems deploying Windows 8.1 Enterprise through WDS (Server 2008 R2)

We're currently running WDS in our environment and have no issues deploying Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

We're currently trying to deploy Windows 8.1 and it was built in the same way as Windows 8 but we keep running into an issue where it gets to the OS install and then fails partway through.  I've rebuilt everything from scratch, copied the exact settings from Windows 8, but it still fails at the same place.  The error is generic and I'm not very knowledgeable in it since I wasn't the one that built it.

Could someone here take a look at the smsts.log and maybe give me a hint as to how to fix this?

Thanks for your help.

This is only the last part since I was foiled by the character limit of this box.

MDT USB Media - "Restart Computer" causes State Restore phase to Start Over in a Loop - E6540

I've been really pulling my hair out over this one!

When my Task Sequence reaches the State Restore phase, I have someCustom Tasks that perform followed by a "Restart Computer" task.

After the computer restarts, it starts the entire State Restore phase over again from the beginning.

This causes a "Boot Loop" of sorts, repeating from the start of State Restore phase until the Restart Computer task.
Over and over.

Now here's the kicker!! - This ONLY happens on our Dell Latitude E6540 when I useUSB Media.
When I use the WDS, it works fine. On all other models (2 other laptops and 1 desktop tested so far) it works fine.

Any troubleshooting pointers would be greatly appreciated!

OSDComputerName = MDT DB Computer Description

Hi,

We have a new working MDT 2013 install and would like to have the computer named to the value of the Database > Computers > Computer > Description field.

In our previous MDT2010 installation we had imported the name into this Description field as well as OSDComputerName field, but would prefer it if we did not have to edit the OSDComputerName field at all (less human error when we have to manually add computers to the DB).

I have spent a number of hours searching, but have not found this exact request. I have used OSDComputerName=%SerialNumber% in CustomSettings.INI, as well as specifying OSDComputerName on the computer in the DB of which both work fine, but cannot find the variable for this elusive Description field!

Please can anyone give me some suggestions!
Thanks
Tim

BitLocker MDT 2013 Deployment Hell!

Hi

I'm having some issues with deploying Win 7 x64 via MDT 2013 and Win PE.

At the moment I am testing this on a Dell Latitude E5430.  The laptop is building fine for everything else but BitLocker is in a suspended state.  When you try to resume it it fails saying "You cannot delete the last key on this drive".

The laptop joins the domain ok but no recovery key has been put into AD.

This is my customsettings.ini:

SkipComputerName=Yes

SkipLocaleSelection=Yes

FinishAction=REBOOT

I have the initial "Enable BitLocker (Offline)" set in the Pre-Install part.

I then have the "Enable BitLocker" TS set at the the very end just before the "Apply Local GPO Package" TS.

I'm learning as I go here so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Kindest Regards

Marcus

Where is the value of %make% and %model% come from?

Okay so i understand one of the method of driver management is to set the DriverGroup to such path :

Windows 7/%make%/%model%

But i cant really tell where does MDT pull this value from? I can speculate that it pulls model from Win32_ComputerSystem attribute "model" (is this correct?) class but how bout %make%?? any ideas?

Driver Selection Profile Question

Environment: MDT 2012 Update 1

I recently created my first Selection Profile and pointed it at a folder in Out-of-Box Drivers expecting that MDT would not pull drivers from other folders at the same level that were not checked. I can confirm that it has pulled at least one driver (Fingerprint Reader) from an unchecked folder and I'm trying to understand why.

Help!

I am attempting to do a XP to Windows 7-64 bit migration using GPO's. The Scanstate and Loadstate commands work as expected when run on the pc while logged in as local admin. When i attempt to run it from AD under a gpo using local system permissions... (same permissions i install all the other gpo's) it fails and issues the error:   "Unable to start. check the log parameter and or process permissions." Loadstate return code 71.

i have tried turning off UAC and that has no effect.

Any ideas?

MDT CustomSettings.ini

I tried putting domain join information in the Default section of CustomSettings.ini but that breaks my capture task sequence. However, if I put it in the TaskSequence like [006] it doesn't fill in the OU. Also, the userid/password doesn't match what I used. Is that information ignored and only pulled from Bootstrap.ini? I also pass in ADGroup in the task sequence but if the OU portion isn't working i'm assuming that won't work either.

Has anyone else seen this problem? It is fine if the domain join portion is copied to each TS so that capture's still work but I would like it to pass the OU and ADGroup automatically.

Task doesn't starts when Lite Touch PE is launched.

Hello everybody:

First at all, sorry for my english, I hope that you understand me correctly.

Few months ago I have configured Windows Deployment Services with Microsoft Deployment Toolkit and ADK 8.0 in the main office and it works really good. This was a success so my boss want to set up this role in the other offices.

Now I'm configuring WDS wiht MDT and ADK in other office, replicating the configuration that I made in the main office. All looks OK but when I launch the Lite Touch PE throuhg PXE appears the command prompt instead the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit Screen.

I've try to look in the Event Viewer, to seach logs in Windows PE but I can't find anything related. I'm really lost with this so I hope that someone can help me with this.

The server is:

Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows deployment services role installed

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2012

Windows Assesment and Deployment Toolkit 8.0

If you need further info, just ask to me.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Kind regards,

Rufino.

Issues with ztibackground and xresolution with Win 8 build

I am using SCCM 2012 SP1 CU2 with MDT 2012.1 (6.1.2373), which I understand support Windows 8. I use SCCM OSD to deploy Win 7 SP1 no problem at all. I'm now testing Windows 8 RTM and SP1 image in my lab. Couple of strange things.

1. I have a Make/Model for VMware workstation which I set to my screen resolution of 1920 x 1200. - works just fine on the Win 7 deployment not for Win8. Strange thing is BDD.Log clearly shows the xResolution and Yresolution properties set up but zticonfigure.log does not update - here's the line "Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup"]/Display/HorizontalResolution not found in E:\Windows\panther\unattend\unattend.xml, unable to update.." In the windows 7 log file =>"Updated E:\WINDOWS\panther\unattend\unattend.xml with Xresolution=1920 (value was 1024)" - I am using the standard unattend.xml file created by MDt during client create TS setup

2. ZTIBackground doesn't set after the O/S is up i.e. ok durinng WinPE but after joining domain setting values to 3 and 4 nothing happens. ztisetbackground.log indicates no issues "Property image is now = 4 and ztisetbackground processing completed successfully." - again no problem with the windows 7 deployment which is using the same task sequence steps

( other than that the image does deploy ok)

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=25175 states that this version of MDT should be fully compliant with Windows 8 RTM so I'm confused why there should be any problems

Any thoughts ?

MDT 2013 replication keeps replicating some files

$

I have discovered a problem with MDT 2013 where some of the Tools files are being replicating all the time. This happens if I replicate a deployment share and then on the target server I do an "Update". The update replaces some files that just got replicated. If I then go back to the source server and I replicate it again, these files are re-replicated. I have checked the source and the target files and I think I know the reason.

MDT gets some if its files from the ADK 8.1 Templates / Source directory. Checking these I found that the files on ADK and MDT once copied are the same but 1 hour off. I don't know how that happens but I suspect it is something to do with the time zone and/or daytime saving settings which of course it is set correctly on both servers. This only started to happen with MDT2013 and ADK 8.1. With MDT2012 U1 and ADK 8.0 this didn't occur.

MDT 2013 - Applying Progress - Time Remaining, inaccurate?

Hi All

Just moved to MDT 2013, I've used 2010 extensively in the past and never noticed this issue.

When at the Applying Image stage ( [percentage] Applying progress: Time mins remaining) the estimate seems wildly inaccurate, eg. Time remaining is 40mins when in actual fact it takes 18!

Anyone else had this? It's not a major problem, just a little strange.

Thanks

Matt

Task Sequence (LiteTouch.wsf) does not restart after first logon on Windows 8.1 deployment

Hi guys!

I can't figure out what cause the issue.

First, this is my setup :

ADK installed

MDT 2012 (upgraded from 2010 update 1)

Boot wim regenerated from scratch

LTIApply.wsf edited http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2797676/en-us

Windows 8.1 configured and captured (my first Win 8/8.1 deployment)

New task sequence for that wim.

My issue is:

The task sequence windows won't show up only with windows 8.1 deployment after the first logon. (I tried with a Windows 7 with the same setup, works flawlessly)

I can see the desktop, but nothing show up. I have all the folders and files on the c: (MININT, _SMSTaskSequence LTIBootstrap). I clicked twice on LTIBootstrap, did nothing. I did an LiteTouch.wsf /start, nothing.

I recaptured my Windows 8.1 (it was on a virtual machine) and I did a new TS. The issue still there.

All the SMSOSD logs files are on http://sdrv.ms/18VPSKy

Someone can help me on this? I'll be very happy!

thanks!

I am having issues deploying Windows 8.1 with MDT 2013. I loaded the Enterprise Version and our key in the Task Sequence. Windows deploys and it errors our at step 67 of 88. When the computer is done with the deployment, I can see the Windows 8.1 tiles but the keyboard and mouse do not work. I have searched through BDD.log file but I am a noob and nothing jumped out at me. Anyone have any guesses: (Thank you in advance.)

MDT2013 - Won't sysprep if PC is domain member

I was able to image a machine in 2010U1 w/out issue and now I can't in 2013.

I did find this thread that describes how to sidestep this requirement:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/75fbea0b-cb1e-4404-b281-1acc9f3a4e4d/sysprep-and-capture-domain-member-in-mdt-2012?forum=mdt

I've commented out the section w/in LTISysprep.wsf yet I still can't get it to capture the image.  I still get 7 errors:

Are these errors still related to the machine being on the domain?  If so, is there something else that needs to be done to allow this?  The above link was in reference to MDT2012, so I'm assuming there's something else that's been added that needs to be adjusted.

Main reason for this is because I'm having issues imaging the machine when it's on a workgroup.  I was able to do it the first time, but now every time I try to capture, it errors out saying it can't find LiteTouch.vbs.  I've even gone so far as to map the drive and try to access and then it errors out saying it can't find LiteTouch.wsf.

Don't understand why it's an issue to sysprep a domain machine when it was never an issue prior...

Any help would be greatly appreciated as now I'm stuck...I've got my REF image, but can't get anything going for my GOLD image.

Thanks.

MDT 2012 USB 3.0 Media - "Restart Computer" causes State Restore phase to Start Over in a Loop - E6540

Upgrade from MDT 2010 to MDT 2013

I have a master MDT server and 20 linked deployment shares, which all also have MDT 2010. I want to get onto the latest version and make sure I am doing it in the correct order. I've looked all over here and through the release notes on upgrading and there is not much out there about linked deployment shares.

I know I have to update to 2012 Update 1, then from there to 2013. My question is, do I need to do a content replication to all of my linked deployment shares after updating to 2012, and then again after updating to 2013 or can I just do it after I get the master server to 2013?

MDT2010 and Optiplex 9010 will not sysprep in Windows 7

I'm trying to deploy a WIM image that I created on an Optiplex 960 to a Optiplex 9010.  It goes really well until the last part of completing the setup. Then I get ""windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer hardware" and is stuck in a reboot loop.

The image is Windows 7 Enterpise with SP1. I've added the drivers to the Out-of-Box Drivers section.  I've even tried installing Windows from the DVD, same error. Also used the latest Intel RST drivers (f6flpy-x64.zip). The only install that works is the factory one from Dell which is Windows 7 Professional and not what we want to use.  The SATA setting is the default, RAID.
