MDT 'Format and partition ' function

Hi,

If we are running MDT deployment on exiting machine (re- deploying image) , Does MDT 'Format and Partition' just clean the disk or does it clean, Format and then recreates partitions the disk before applying image?

any guidance will be appreciated on default behavior of MDT 'Format and Partition' function. Thanks
