WSUS update before Capture Wim

I am trying to understand a process a little better.

In order for me to pull updates from the WSUS i need to get GPO's and be on the domain. However i do want/need a ref image on the domain before the capture.

What is the best way to build a ref image, update it and then take a capture without joining the domain?
