MDT 2013 Update 2 & VirtualBox 5.0.x = Lost Disk During Preinstall

0

I am attempting to move off MDT 2012 Update 1 and step up to MDT 2013 Update 2.  Things have gone pretty well so far and I was able to sysprep and capture my build without any issues.  But when I try to deploy this image (or ones that were already on the MDT server) to a VM (VirtualBox 5.0.x) the disk seems to disappear in the middle of everything.  i.e. If you boot into WinPE off MDT server and run a diskpart, the disk is there, but when the task errors and you return to the command line diskpart says there are no disks.  I am using the ADK that was released last year for Windows 10 ADK 1511, which shows up as v8.59.25584 in Programs and Features. Prior to this weekend my "production" setup was using VirtualBox 4.x as it just worked.  I have been using VirtualBox 5.0.12 without issues and deployed tests prior to beginning the MDT 2013 Update 2.  5.0.14 is the most recent release and it has the same issue.

Is anyone using VirtualBox 5.x with MDT 2013 Update 2 successfully???

Similar thread below (there are several...one mentions Surface Pros, one mentions SSDs, this one below has nice pictures).

Deployment Share Always ask to enter the Deployment Share Manually

0

Hi All

Recently, I have installed MDT 2013 Update 1 on a Windows 2012 R2 WDS Server.

I have edited my bootstap.ini file and boot sequence is working fine without any issues. the only problem that I have is, always it prompts me to enter the deployment share manually. Once I enter it manually it continues the rest of the tasks without an issue.

I can confirm that \\<Server>\DeploymentShare$ has "Everyone" full control permissions. Also I have added the DeployRoot=\\<Servername>\DeploymentShare$ in to my bootstrap.ini file.

Is there anyway to fix this issue?

MDT 2012 Network Share Credentials?

0
0

I've been testing the MDT server with my Domain Admin account.

So i wanted to allow users to PXE boot and install from MDT server, so my question is the credentials needed during deployment is based on Domain Admin account or based on users who are allowed access to the deployment share folder?

My MDT Server is the DC Server as well.

DO I need WDK?

If this has been answered already, please point me to the relevant post.

I have SCCM 2012, I want to install Windows 7 8 and 10 images using it. I also want UDI!

I know I need MDT 2013 that can help in getting boot images and a UDI designer.

Meat of the question is "do I need WAIK/WDK?"

Image Capture fails on Windows 10 version 1511 build 10586

MDT 2013 Update 1 v.6.3.8298.1000. Windows 10 ADK v. 10.0.26624

Capture fails as Sysprep begins with following error:

Logs located here: http://1drv.ms/1Tn9vTQ

Capturing from a VM (Hyper-V). Previous Windows 10 (Build 10240) captures fine.

I have not updated to Windows 10 ADK version 1511 per Johan’s recommendation (http://deploymentresearch.com/Research/Post/516/New-blog-post-Inside-Windows-10-ADK-Build-10586), and I have seen elsewhere that it is not a requirement to capture/deploy the new Windows 10 1511 version?

I have tried the suggestions listed here, but to no avail: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c549346f-d900-4026-8748-2c4f0dd54a83/mdt2013up1image-capture-fails-on-surface-pro-3?forum=mdt

Is there a fix on the horizon, or another workaround to try?

BCDBoot on wrong disk

Hello,

I'm experiencing some issues when BCDboot gets applied. it gets on the Offline usb media instead of the internal disk.

Using a Usb Key that is recognized as a HD (Corsair flash Voyager GTX),  when the process is completed, I need to leave the key in, otherwise the PC freezes. Also, if the key is not plugged in, the PC boots in the UEFI firmware settings.

It seems that the BCD is set on the Usb key as the partition is now hidden.. I redid the key and I still get the same. Then, I tried the exact same process on an HP laptop and the process works fine (and when in Windows, I still see the Boot partition from the USB key). The PC with the error is a Lenovo x240.

I would seem that the MDT scripts are detecting a bootable device on the USB key and rewrites BCDBoot on it. On the left capture is the BDD.log from USB to network share and right side is the offline media  (I can't paste links or add pictures..) :

https://

//onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=69C658418B21AD07!402&authkey=!ACTYIC7syXVZnIU&ithint=folder%2cmst

The behavior occurs on specific models (with UEFI updated to the latest versions). The key is formatted with a Boot partition (Fat32) and a Deploy partition (NTFS).In order to try with only a key that has 1 partition with the whole share, I tried to use the ‘SkipWimSplit’ configuration to False in the settings.xml (our Wim is a little bit over 4gb) but the setting does not seem to work in MDT 2013 Update 2. We are thing to keep away from third party solutions such as Rufus as this seems to be a product issue (1. with SplitWim not working.  2. with the scripts applying on the proper disk but not setting the proper boot manager sequence)

You help is much appreciated.

For the moment the TPM is not activated, it waits for State Restore in the Task Sequence, i have a Bitlocker group folder with Task sequence variable BDEInstallSuppress not equals YES

In this folder i have a couple of applications using cctk version 3.0 that set a BIOS password, enable TPM and activate it.

The OS drive was once encrypted so i have ran diskpart and used the clean command already

Could that be an issue with UAC?

MDT 2012 U1 Drivers are not injected for certain model

Hi Community,

I've been using MDT for quite a while and was able to solve any issues by looking up clues in this forum - thanks for all your help!

But now I've run into an issue which really bugs me out. The setup we use for our deployments is the following:

  • MDT2012 U1 incl. Database
  • Separate driver folders for each manufacturer and model ("Total Control")
  • Database roles for storing our custom settings (regional settings, which task sequence to use etc.)
  • The driver group for each model is set in the database entry for each model (e.g. for HP Z240 Tower Workstation: DriverGroup -> Model\HP\Z240)
  • In each task sequence, under Preinstall > "Inject Drivers" the selection profile is set to "Nothing" and "Install all drivers from the selection profile"
  • The second time the "Inject Drivers" task is set to run, is during the Postinstall phase. It executes the ZTIDrivers.wsf

Now this works for any make and model we use, except for the new HP Z240 Tower Workstations. I already checked 3 times whether the WMIC Name for the system is correct. Also the log files show the same name as set in the database:

Property Model is now = HP Z240 Tower Workstation	ZTIGather	15.02.2016 00:15:21	0 (0x0000)

Also I recognized this:

Obviously, MDT can't match any drivers to the hardware IDs of the components.

Now, when I set the parameter "DriverGroup" inside the database role to "Model\HP\Z240", all drivers are installed flawlessly.

I tried to get my head around why this would work via setting the DriverGroup in the database role, but not under "make and model".

So please, if you have a solution or any hint on why this is not working, you would make my day! :-)

Best regards,

Benjamin

How to setup Task Sequence in MDT for installing OS to specific partition?

Hi All,

I have a question for installing OS to specific partition.

For example, I have two primary partitions in one disk, they are OSDisk partition andData partition.

There are many data in our data partition, now I want to install the OS to OSDisk partition without impact to Data partition.

How should I configure the task sequence? Thanks.

Any way to make MDT look at SCCM for Windows Updates?

Hi all,

Is it possible to have a step in a task sequence which instigates Windows Updates, but looks at SCCM software updates folders, and installs from there?

MDT 2013 Update 2 Monitoring errors

We just upgraded our MDT server to Update 2.  After the update, monitoring is not longer working.  The service is running and the settings in cs.ini are correct.  The bdd.log on the client shows an error from the web service - "Unexpected response from web service: 400 Bad Request"

The monitoring service was working perfectly before upgrading to Update 2.  Has anyone seen this issue?

MDT 2013

I am creating a task sequence to deploy offline Windows 2012 R2.  The finished product will be used to deploy physical servers in our remote plants.  The image will be deployed via USB sticks.  I will be testing the process and loads on a VM in our VSphere 5.5 environment.  I have having issue with the WinPe ( I presume).  I have created the image and task sequence.  I have inserted the VMWARE drivers from VMWARE tools.  I have created the offline boot media for this.  To be sure, I have selected the boot media to contain ALL (Apps, OS, Task Sequence, Out oF Box Drivers, etc).  I boot with the image and I select the task sequence.  I fill in the answer file, It gathers the 'Asset Information' and then proceeds to format the disk.  I then spits out an error stating that no storage is found.  My disk controller in the VM is LSI-Parallel SCSI.  Could someone give me some specific steps that would be causing this and how to fix it?  I feel like I am repeating the same things getting the same things.

I am including the screen shots for clarity.

Question about Bitlocker and Re-Imaging.

We are not using Bitlocker through MDT, just running it manually during configuration.
We've been told that any machine that's had Bitlocker on it MUST be decrypted before
re-imaging.
My question is: I can boot to MDT and at the image menu, cancel out of MDT. At the DOS
screen, I do a diskpart and Select Disk 0 and enter Clean. Does this efficiently wipe the drive
or am I actually required to either Killdisk the drive or run a Bitlocker decryption?
If I can just use "Clean" at the diskpart prompt, I can save lots of time decrypting the
drive or running Killdisk.
Thanks!

MDT 2013 U1 - Deployment stops after processing rules

Good morning / afternoon,

I've a strange issue with MDT 2013 U1. The server is new, I'm just trying to build the reference image on a virtual machine. We would like to deploy Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bits. I've a task sequence for the build, in which I have enabled Windows Updates, disabled Bitlocker (won't be used at all) and GPO. I've added a script to cleanup the system before Sysprep, and that's all.

The problem is that I cannot get the deployment working. After the boot in PXE, I see the bootstrap settings processed, I see the custom settings processed.. And the deployment stops at that point. I just have the grey background and that's all. I've no logs in the share created for that. Here is my customsettings:

[Settings]

EventService=http://MDTSERVER:9800

SLShare=\\SERVERIPADDRESS\logs$\bdekey\%serialnumber%-PC
SLShareDynamicLogging=\\SERVERIPADDRESS\logs$\bdekey_dlogs\%serialnumber%-PC

I tried without the event logging, Bitlocker enabled and disabled, tried to make a new deployment share, tried to set the task sequence ID to use in the custom settings, but no luck..

Does anyone have an idea ?

Thank you.

Task sequence 'out of memory' error at Windows Update stage, when creating Win 7 x86 reference image.

Hi all,

Tearing my hair out with this one! I'm trying to create a Win 7 Enterprise x86 reference image, and my task sequence fails at the Windows Update stage, giving an 'out of memory' error, though my Hyper-V machine has 4GB allocated to it, and task manager doesn't show it coming close to full memory usage at the time. Plenty of virtual disk space, too. Screenshot attached - have access to logs as well, if anyone needs? The same deployment share creates x64 reference images fine...

Would sincerely appreciate any help you can provide.

Windows 10 v1511 Upgrade Task Sequence

Hi

I'm running a Win 10 upgrade task sequence in MDT 2013 Update 2. I've modified the condition on the "Post-Processing" section so that it runs (to fix the issue with the registry key never being set). I'm using a Gen2 Hyper-V VM and upgrading from Win 7 x64 Enterprise to Win 10 v1511 x64 Enterprise.

In the post-processing section I'm running some additional tasks, such as installing features, applications, etc. I have the following issues:

1. When the post-processing section runs I do not see the TS progress dialog. I'm not sure if this is because the process is still running in the Windows Upgrade Setup phase in the SYSTEM context but it just looks like nothing is happening and then eventually the final summary screen will appear. Is this expected behaviour?

2. If I add a Restart Computer step or something causes the computer to perform a restart (such as installing features), when the SetupComplete.cmd runs after the reboot and runs the Lite touch again I get I get the message "An existing in-progress deployment was found but is not in an expected state.  Would you like to ignore this in-progress deployment and start a new one?" which is odd because the SetupComplete.cmd runs the LTIBootstrap with the /start switch. Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

3. When the upgrade TS does finish (without any additional steps such as installing features or reboots, it sometimes just sits at a blank screen and other times just goes into a never ending reboot loop. Again, has anyone else seen this behaviour?

Mark

MDT 2013 - Windows 10 Deployment Fails Randomly - Incorrect Function

0

Hello,  we've been having issues with deploying Windows 10 since it first became available.  It's becoming increasingly problematic as more users request Windows 10, deployments only succeed about 50% of the time.  The other 50% of the time, the task sequence fails at random points during the State Restore phase.

All that is happening during the state restore is pretty much the norm, some applications are set to install, it sets some variables, joins the domain and restarts.  Windows 7 deployments have no issues with these tasks, Windows 10 is highly unpredictable. Currently the only solution I have for the help desk guys is to reimage the machine until it succeeds.

Now when it fails, the only actual 'error' I can find in any logs is in the smsts.log.  I decided to make every single step in the State Restore phase of the task sequence continue on error so I can get a better idea of what it is doing.  It'll start the State Restore phase normally, but after several steps in it'll skip a whole lot of steps, then it'll successfully do other steps, then skip some more.  Each machine I've seen succeeds and skips completely different steps, and they all skip with the error of 'Incorrect Function'.  Any type of step will fail with this error also.  Though since most of the steps are for application installs, they apply mostly to those, but it also will randomly fail on 'run command line' steps, and also 'set task sequence variable' steps.

For testing purposes I have been reimaging a Dell Latitude E7440 and Latitude E7450.  MDT version is current 2013 Update 2, however this problem was also present in Update 1.  My troubleshooting has resorted to my last ditch effort of recreating an entirely new deployment share using the latest MDT build, creating a bare bones windows 10 image to deploy and test and the results are the same as the normal production deploymentshare.  Reimaging these two laptops will literally either half the time fail out at some random time, or will process all steps successfully.

Logs from two different deployments:

http://1drv.ms/1Po41sF

The smsts.log is literally littered with random steps that either succeed or fail.  the ZTIApplications.log doesn't provide any log information regarding the applications that succeeded or failed.  Likewise, ZTISetVariable.log has no information about the variables it couldn't set, and the ZTIDomainJoin.log has no information (or wasn't even created), as well with ZTIGroups.log and ZTIUserState.log.  These failures are only randomly occurring in the State Restore phase, after the image has been loaded on the drive and the OS boots up and logs in.  The error for any script it's calling in Incorrect Function, I don't know what it's doing and ran out of things to try and do to make it work.  And it's gotta work correctly...  this is all the information I can think to provide, but do let me know if more information would be useful.

Thanks!

Adding Windows 10 to MDT TS.

I've been asking lots of questions here lately.....this one is about adding Win10E to MDT2013.

Right now, I have two separate deployment shares to deploy an OS....one for Surface Win8.1E machines which require a UEFI USB drive, and the other a standard Legacy USB for Windows 7E and Windows 8.1E on anything other than Surfaces. So we have two thumb drives.
I am able to add Win8 TS to my Deploy Share that also deploys Win7 (except for the Surface). Am I able to add Win10E to my Win7E deployment share or must I create yet a third Deploy Share for it? I hope this makes sense. My Co is wanting to start delving into 10. The last thing I would want is a 3rd USB!
Thanks!
