model and model aliases

0
0

Hello,

clean mdt 2013. Boot images created. I am following Johan's Total Control for drivers management.

Received 2 Lenovo models : 20DH002QUS and 20DE001PCA (THINK PAD Edge 555 and Edge 455).

Read about problems with Lenovo driver deployment related to model naming.

Many discussions are few years old mention about using Model Aliases specifically for Lenovo.

I am not ready right now for starting to look into Model Aliases and would like to avoid this topic right now if I can prepare successful deployment for 2-3 Lenovo models.

So before starting (for not spending time for nothing) I want to ask if using Driver Group is a valid option for Lenovo's model names above.

In Out of Box I created the structure:

Windows 7 x64 \ Lenovo \ 20DE001PCA and then in Model name folder subfolders Video Audio Chipset et etc

Would it work?      If I will set Task Sequence Var: DriverGroup001    Value: Windows 7 x64\%Model%

I need to set at least those 2 models. Few more coming.

Thanks.

Intelpcc.sys driver error on Dell Latitude E5450

Tried to deploy a Windows 7 x64 image via MDT to the Latitude E5450, but deployment would stop after the unattended .xml, when Windows loads for the first time, with a blue screen driver error for intelpcc.sys. This driver is for the Intel Collaborative Processor Performance Control driver. Drivers are up to date from Dell's cab site. I then tested deploying Windows 8.1 to the same machine, and the deployment was successful. Does anyone have a fix for Windows 7 and this driver issue? Thank you.

MDT - The following networking device did not have a driver installed

Using MDT 6 and WDS

x2 different dell laptops E5440 and E7250 using the same nic card - Intel I218-LM

Booting into litetouchpe_x86 wim

get error

The following networking device did not have a driver installed

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_155A&Subsys_0DE2039&REV_04 - E5440

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_15A2&Subsys_062D1028&REV_03 - E7250

Downloaded the drivers from the intel site and loaded im certain the correct drivers I m loading both x86 and x64 as when i look at the inf files it shows

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_155A and PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_15A2 however the subsys number does not match does this matter?

so in MDT i load the drivers into the WinPE folder then updated the share which completes successfully then updated the image in WDS but i still get the error.

Tried using the Dell drivers as well same problem

What am i doing wrong ?

Any help would be great.

Quick update still having the same problem but i went into winpe and opened the .inf from MDT and I do see PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_15A2&SUBSYS_062D1028 in there dont see REV03 not sure if this makes the difference? so the drivers do match in WINPE folder and still getting the same error.

How to Quickly Wipe MBR in WinPE?

0

As part of our imaging process we need to the wipe the MBR of all machines that have been encrypted.  If I boot a Win8.1 amd64 ISO, select Repair > Advanced > Command Prompt > Run bootrec.exe /fixmbr, it works fine and corrects the issue we encounter when we don't do this.

I copied what I thought were the necessary files into our amd64 winpe.wim, based on the following sites:

And although it appears to run successfully (no errors; it claims it executed successfully etc.) it doesn't seem to be doing anything as the problem persists.

So: What files are required in order for bootrec to execute/function successfully in a WinPE environment?

If you're asking "What's the issue you're encountering?":
We use Symantec Encryption Desktop (aka PGP) and it adds a bootguard to the MBR.
We need to clear this out (wipe the MBR) in order for the machines to boot:

  • Creating a diskpart script to sel dis 0 and clean isn't sufficient to wipe the MBR

  • Converting the disk to GPT then back to MBR during a TS (prior to the format & partition step) will remove bootguard, HOWEVER, it causes the TS to fail once it gets into Windows with:
"Wizard Error: Unable to find the SMS Task Sequencer.  The deployment will not proceed."

I've tried doing this both via a task sequence step that runs a diskpart script (prior to the format & partition step) and by adding 'oUtility.RunCommandWrite oExec, "CONVERT GPT NOERR"' to around line 340 of ZTIDiskPart but the results are the same.

  • Uninstrumenting the drive should correct this, but you cannot uninstrument an encrypted disk and decrypting the drive takes way too long

  • Secure wiping the disk (e.g.: via WipeDisk, DBAN) takes way too long

I'm open to using third-party utilities, but would prefer something I can use in WinPE during the Task Sequence.

Problem with update packages MDT

Hi, when i build boot image with update packages the mdt it give me a error

Error: 0x800f081e
The specified package is not applicable to this image.
Exit code = -2146498530

The wim file is take from win 7 italian iso x64, the updates I push in mdt are the same that I install on test machine with italian iso.

I think the problem is in some script of mdt when "update deployment share"

Can this be done, if so how?

Can I add a recovery partition (not using 3rd party apps) to a hidden drive on an existing install of windows 7 that will restore a custom wim file that was captured using imagex?

injecting driver question

Hi,

deploying Lenovo E455. Downloaded 15 Drivers. Extracted. Some of them are extracts to Setup only. So no way to import.

1. I guess that unextractable (no inf) should be added as APP only. Correct?

2. Some drivers after instructions are in Packages folder.

I drilled up to Drivers folder and deleted Win7 left just Win64 folders. When imported I got some warnings about no support for 32 bit. I think there is no problem with that. Right?

My question is about Drivers in MDT with (1). They look like duplicate. Should I delete them?

Please see the screenshot below.

patch management for Office 2013 on MDT

0

Hello,

on current MDT 2012, Office 2013 is added as an app. MSP was created for customization and placed in Update folder (did it a while ago)

I am preparing new MDT 2013. Deployed OS will be patched with latest updates. So Windows update will not take initially any time for applying patches after deployment from WSUS.

I would like to know best practices for Updating Office 2013 on Deployment Share.

Please provide a link or instructions: where to get latest O2013 Update Packages (at least security and critical) and how to place them properly in Update folder. Can it coexist with Customization.msp?

1. What is the right thing to manage this? No SCCM in place.

2. Does somebody includes Office 2013 in the image and then use GPO for customization?

Is it a valid scenario? I see at least 2 advantages: no additional time after deployment and full patches for the moment of image creation. Than it could be updated in the moment of image update.

Does it make sense? What are disadvantages of this approach?

thanks.

WDS (for PXE) and MDT 2013 on the same server

Can WDS be installed for providing PXE for MDT 2013 on the same Server 2012 R2?

fingerprint and autoscroll

I succeeded to extract all of Lenovo E455 drivers.

There are 2 that looks like app only.

Autoscroll and Fingerprint.

Autoscroll is not extractable tried different optons. It just "wants" to install.

Fingerprint is extractable but is a bit weird. I will not describe... But I think to configure Fingerprint app will be required anyway.

Could somebody confirm if I am right in thinking to provide those two as APPS in TS.

Or other advices...

Thanks.

Deployment Blue Screens

Hi,

I'm trying to deploy a Windows 7 image to a Dell Optiplex 9010. The install process completes, but on the first reboot, results in a blue screen.

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xFFFFFFFF0000005, 0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFF880035AF7E8, 0xFFFFF880035AF040)

No driver files is specified in the blue screen message, which disappears almost immediately as it is displayed. I booted into a Linux disk to try and see if there were minidump files on the hard drive but there weren't any. The BDD.log files says to reference a log file in X:\Windows, but I can't find that drive anywhere. I take it that drive is used while MDT is running. Since the blue screen happens after the first reboot, neither MDT nor Windows is running at that point. I don't know how else to access X:\. I took a wild guess that it was the video driver that was causing the problem and removed that from the driver store and updated/redeployed the image only to have the same results. I have the latest drivers from Dell's web-site (4/14/15). I am not sure what else I can try. Please help?

Thanks

Windows could not parse or process unattended answer file

So I did everything in preparation to deploy the image I captured.  But when I try to deploy the image I made after the disk is formatted and partitioned when the setup process takes place I get the error message Windows could not parse or process unattended answer file c:\windows\panther\unattend.xml for pass [specialize] or setting specified in the answer file does not exist.  What setting in the answer file is it missing?  I looked at a Task Sequence that I know works but I could not find any difference between the two.  I saw many other questions like this but could not find answer

Dealing with PC's with no Windows 7 drivers

How are you dealing with deploying Windows 7 to your organisation (or Windows 8/8.1) and not having Windows 7 drivers available for a particular model of machine. I'm deploying to mostly Dell workstations, but have just run into a problem with Precision T5400 and some Precision 490 not having Windows 7 drivers. This is causing issues with deployment (where it won't actually start as it throws up a NIC error). I haven't even got to the part for the Inject Drivers task sequence. Any help appreciated?

Visio and Project 2013 silent install returns immediately (before install is finished)

0

Hi,

I am building a task sequence that will include Office 2010 ProPlus (volume license), a bunch of other products (like SQL Server and Visual Studio) and also Visio 2013 and Project 2013.

For Visio 2013 and Project 2013, I have to use the retail media (this is for use in academic computer labs and we have a single retail key through DreamSpark Premium that allows unlimited activations - I don't know why DreamSpark doesn't just give a volume license key).

I managed to get Visio 2013 and Project 2013 to install silently by modifying the config.xml file and using the /config parameter. However, when running my install script (the usual VBScript wrapper) or just from the command line, the command returns before setup finishes (literally within less than a second). Setup continues to run and finishes successfully, but as you can imagine, MDT considers that application install finished and tries to move on to the next application which fails because another installation is still in progress.

I've included below the relevant portion of the VBScript wrapper. Any help in figuring out how to get the wrapper to wait for the installer to finish is appreciated.

sSetupFile = oUtility.ScriptDir & "\Source\setup.exe"
sArguments = "/config vispror.ww\config.xml"

oLogging.CreateEntry oUtility.ScriptName & ": Starting installation", LogTypeInfo

// Check for existence of setup file omitted
// ...

iRetVal = oUtility.RunWithHeartbeat("""" & sSetupFile & """ " & sArguments)

Coincidentally, iRetVal = 0 indicating success.

Thanks,

SA

RDP, UAC, Firewall reset to default in Deployed image

0

In first image deployed from brand new MDT2013 the setting for RDP, UAC and Firewall that were set in the image before capture to Enable, Disable, Turn OFF are changed back to Disable, Enable, Turn ON.

I never saw this on MDT 2012.  Was something changed?

Can we force these settings in TS?

Thx.

PXE boot fail... Worked before for the same model

0

I created USB WinPE key using x64 boot image.

It worked 2 times. I connected to MDT share and deployed images on Lenovo E455 that uses Realtek driver.

MDT server and computers are on the same LAN. (new office with no vLANs)

What is weird that now I am trying to boot the same machine and get:

"A connection to the deployment share could not be made. Cannot reach deploy root.

Possible cause network routing error or network configuration error. "

Don't think USB key is a problem.

When F8, I get APIPA...

Any driver was not imported to boot images. It is fresh MDT2013

In Out of box created DriverGroup001. Updated DS but don't think it could affect boot images.

And as mentioned it worked find I booted the machine. All my Out of box were installed correctly.

What could happen with the Boot image?

Thanks.

How do I make variables from CS.INI available to task sequences?

0
0

So I have created some custom variables in customsettings.ini under the 'Properties' area.  These variables seem to be working in WinPE, but once I reboot and start to install Windows, the variables aren't listed.

I also don't see them listed in the BDD.log (if they should be there).

What am I doing wrong?
