MDT: deploy from share which is not in domain?

Hi,

I'm trying to deploy a task sequence from a share which is hosted on a nas (not in a domain).
When it tries to connect to the share it says it needs a domain name but there is none. If I fill in a dummy name the connection fails.

Pls advise.

MDT CustomSettings.ini and Priority - how does it work?

$

Can someone explain to me why this Priority thing is not working as I think it shoudl work :) Maybe I dont really understand the logic behind this.

My CustomSettings.ini

[Settings]
Priority=TaskSequenceID,Default

Properties=MyCustomProperty

[Default]
OSDComputerName=Desktop01

[TEST01]
OSDComputerName=Desktop02

From what I understand when I select TEST01 Task Sequence from the deployment wizard, it should set the Computer Name to "Desktop02" because the priority for this section is higher. It doesn't work. Computer name is always "Desktop01".

If I modify the Priority line in CustomSettings.ini and remove the Default

Priority=TaskSequenceID

After this the Computer name is set to "Desktop02".

How to install OS on only C with USB media deployment

$

I have one hard drive with four partitions.The 1st one is OS.

There is an error shows "Unable to determine destination disk" with USB deployment.

And also the error comes out when there is a USB drive plug in during Network deployment.

But it works fine when there is no any USB drive plug in during Network deployment.

Anyone has a clue or a solution?

Somebody help Me out?

please

Windows 8.1 first log in is very slow

I'm seeing an issue where the first time a domain account logs into a system running Windows 8.1, it takes a very long time (up to 15 minutes) to go through the "Setting things up for you" and "Installing apps" screen.

Has anyone else been having this issue?

I've tried disabling the first run animation, but it didn't make too much of a difference.

MDT and skipping locale and keyboard selection during wizard

When I try to skip locale and keyboard settings during the wizard they always revert to en-US for some reason. My customsettings.ini looks like this:

SkipLocaleSelection=YES
KeyboardLocale=fr-fr
UserLocale=fr-fr
UILanguage=fr-fr

Everything works if I just dont skip the locale selection wizard page and only click next to it

SkipLocaleSelection=NO
KeyboardLocale=fr-fr
UserLocale=fr-fr
UILanguage=fr-fr

Why is this happening? I'm deploying Windows 7 Enterprise (English -version). I just want the locale and keyboard layout to change, not the OS language.

Deploying captured image of reference computer - WDS & MDT

Hi, yesterday I set up MDT 2012 Update 1 on Windows 7 computer and WDS on Windows Server 2008 R2. I completed the following tasks:

  • Create New Deployment Share
  • Import Operating System (Windows 7) into Deployment Share
  • Import network drivers for HP Compaq Pro 6300 Small Form Factor into Deployment Share
  • Create Sysprep and Capture Task Sequence for capturing image of reference computer
  • Update Deployment Share
  • Prepare reference computer for imaging - install OS, drivers, apps, patches . . .
  • Run Sysprep and Capture Task Sequence from reference computer
  • Import captured image of reference computer into Deployment Share
  • Create Standard Client Task Sequence for deploying captured image to bare-metal computer
  • Use Lite_Touch wim file as WDS boot image
  • Run PXE boot on bare-metal computer
  • Enter necessary information - computer name, domain name, time zone and so on

I took more than 2 hours to complete deployment of captured image to bare-metal computer. Everything worked well but after this process finished I noticed that computer name was not the one I entered in TS nor computer was joined to the domain. Time zone was not set. It seems that computer name, workgroup membership, time zone can not be altered in TS - they remain the same as they were on sysprepped computer.

KB2918614 Breaks MDT2012 Update 1 Task Sequence "Install Application" Items on Windows 7 deployments

Consider the following scenario:

  1. You have a WDS deployment environment for your enterprise running on Windows Server 2008 R2.
  2. You use MDT 2012 Update 01 to create a Windows 7 Task Sequence for workstation deployment.
  3. The task sequence has an "Install Application" task to install Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 RU4 MP1b.
  4. You either refresh your reference build to incorporate KB2918614 or you publish the update via WSUS and use the Install Updates task in the task sequence prior to the "Install Application" task to install the hotfix.

In this scenario, the "Install Application" task starts but never completes. The Symantec installation executable is never called and does not show up in Task Manager. All subsequent "Install Application" tasks exhibit the same behavior. No error messages are generated. Eventually the Task Sequence itself times out and moves on to the next task.

If you remove update KB2918614 from your reference build or unapprove it from your WSUS server, all "Install Application" tasks in the task sequence execute correctly.

Has anyone else experienced a similar issues with deployments? My hunch is that the problem is not specific to the application being installed, and it may also be a problem for environments using SCCM to install Windows 7. I have not had a chance to explore this more, so I kept my scenario to the facts that I have directly observed.

MDT task sequence do not resume post OOBE step

Hello,

I am new to MDT and have been struggling with MDT default OS deployment Task sequence.

I am using a captured Image from a reference computer for the deployment purpose.

Now during the task Sequence when the Post Install phase is finished and the system restarts, Task Sequence does not resume after the reboot for the State restore step to finish the Task Sequence.

Please help what can be done in this case?

Thanks

SCCM SUP use for patching image build in MDT 2013

Hi ,

I have SCCM 2012 R2 SUP (WSUS) and then i have MDT 2013 for build and capture Images. I am trying to use windows update method in MDT 2013 but my reference  VM failes to get any updates. How do i get the patches that are approved inside SCCM (since now sccm is controlling WSUS now through SUP)? Any pointers will be appreciated

Use the default format and partition step to format disk0 partition 1 in multiple disks sutiation

As we know,we need to disable the default format and partition step in ts to let mdt deploy os on C and leave the other partitions stay safe when there is only one disk on pc,and the way of installing operation system is logical drive letter store in a varible.

But what if there are 2 disks on pc,and for a record the disk 0 is always the OS disk,don't need to confirmed this.How can we modify the format and partition step to format only C on disk0 under this condition?then lead the mdt to do the rest deployment by itself.

Thanks

Detect Hardware type "IsTablet" in MDT 2013 (No detection of Surface Pro)

Hello,

I need to be able to separate a tablet from a laptop in MDT2013, currently I can not with the ZTIGather.

The current ZTIGather.vbs is seems not to detect a tablet type hardware. I noticed that the Surface Pro has Chassis-Type = 17,  and is not detected as tablet.

The Property IsTablet (or something else) is not present.

Is there a new version? or and other script that I can use.

Windows deployment service stops at command prompt- W2K8 R2 IBM HS 22

hi,

I'm using windows deployment workbench, and when dropping Win2K8 R2 on an ibm hs22 i can get to the Postinstall section of the task sequence, but when it gets to the end of that section it's supposed to "Restart computer", but instead it just shows a command prompt window.  if i type exit in that window, the machine restarts and finishes the deployment without an error.  I tried adding another "Run Command Line" step to either exit or taskkill /IM cmd.exe, but exit did nothing and taskkill is not available.

Any idea why the machine fails the reboot?  any idea how to fix or work around this?

Script not Found - Unable to find LiteTouch.wsf needed to continue the deployment.

Hello,

MDT is giving the error above after I logging to a PC after the image has been deployed. I had been deploying images from this MDT server without issue until a few days ago. I tried rebuilding the TS, which fixed this problem once, but that didn't resolve the error. I get it with more than one TS.

I don't have the BDD logs at the moment but I can post them tomorrow if they will help.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Coping iso file and mounting problem

$

Hi

I am using Windows Update 8.1 Enterprise 64 bit and Windows ADK.

I noticed that, if I select the "Environment of the deployment tools and creations images" and I click on "Run as Administrator" and I mount on a iso image of windows 8.1 Update, when I run the command

robocopy <Drive_Letter>:\"<Windows_Files_Path>" /e

to copy all its files in a directory and the command

dism /Mount-Image /ImageFile:"<Windows_Files_Path>"\install.wim /Index:<Image_Index> /MountDir:"<Mount_Directory_Path>"

to mount an image volume, this error appears:

Error: 0xc1510111

Not have permission to mount and modify this image.

However, if I copy these files through the "file explorer" window, the mounting of this volume image is working properly. How come?

Thanks

User State Migration Tool v. Easy Transfer Wizard

$

I just started with a new company, and there's been a big debate as to what we should use to backup & restore user data. I recommended USMT or a custom script to get what we want, but many are in favor of Easy Transfer Wizard (ETW).

Truth be told, I never used either (ETW or USMT) at my last company; I wrote a robocopy script to getexactly what we needed which fortunately was really easy because users were good not straying off the beaten path.  Now, I'm open to doing the same here, but the not only is culture is completely different, which means data could be anywhere, the users are furiously adamant, about havingeverything back the way it was.  (This goes beyond like Office settings like QAT's, Outlook signatures, nk2, local & remote PSTs that were loaded etc. - the list goes on.)

I feel obligated to encourage us (myself included) to 'get with the times' and use something mainstream.  From what I've read USMT is the way to go, and itseems pretty easy to customize.  (I'm reading this right now: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd883247(v=ws.10).aspx - some things still aren't clear.) That said, here's a brief summary of what the last few days of discussions have boiled down to, with ETW leading the pack:

Easy Transfer Wizard

  • Easy to use GUI with many options to customize what to migrate
  • Has a direct workstation to workstation transfer mode OR backup to network and then import from the destination
  • Brings over the core user profile settings and documents, but *NOT* MS office settings/customizations. Would be a cleaner migration and therefore a "fresher" build.

USMT

  • Command line utility that would need to be automated to ensure consistency & proper use.
  • Can backup to network or external storage needed for user profile storage.
  • Migrates MS Office settings & customizations.
  • It brings it "all", the good and the bad so issues can migrate from old workstation to new.

Custom Script

  • We have total control over what we backup & restore, so its very precise.
  • Possible to miss something (although I don't see how that would be different from the above)
  • Not pretty - just robocopy in a command window.

What are you all using for backing up & restoring user data?

For you USMT users: Have you all found yourselves making significant customizations to the XMLs?

Multiple entries of "Windows Boot manager" in UEFI on Surface Pro 3

Hi

We are deploying a custom captured image on  Surface Pro 3 using a  using MDT 2013.
Every time i deploy a image there is a new "Windows Boot Manager" entry created and same is visible when you try to boot from a device.

The below post talks about the same issue but option given is to use bcdedit
http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/7817-multiple-windows-boot-manager-entries-under-uefi-section/

The below post says that Dell would be fixing it in future BIOS releases.
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/192596f1-1c68-4c4b-8b0f-21b279a79403/eufi-options-multiple-windows-boot-manager-entries?forum=mdt

Is it a bug with the surface pro 3 UEFI or am i doing something wrong?
We are using the same image to deploy ON Lenovo Thinkpad 10 but i dont see this issue.

BCDEdit /deletevalue might be an option but want to know if it is a known bug or something wrong with the way i am doing.

Wiping a disk with MDT task sequence?

I'm thinking that I could use MDT/WDS to do a secure disk wipe for old computers. Has anyone implemented something like this with MDT?
