Multiple OS in same task sequence

0
0

Hi,

Scenario:

I have random different computer configurations where any of the following OS can be installed: win 7 HP, Pro, Ult or win 8.1 and 8.1 Pro.

All drivers (apart from lan and USB) are installed as application bundles (grouped by motherboard)

At the moment I have 5 task sequences for 5 different OS, but if any changes has to be made - I have to update all of them. Recent one - I would like to add GPU detection and automatically install correct nvidia or AMD drivers.

Is there any chance to have one task sequence or two (win 7 and win 8.1) where I can select correct OS to be installed. or maybe have something like split task sequence.

Which is better? Install Microsoft Office as part of an image or do a post install?

I've always kept Office as part of the image as I thought it would decrease the total time for deployment. Is it better to deploy it as a post install application?

Importing .wim with three partitions captured with SCCM build and capture fails

I am trying to Import a .wim with three partitions captured with SCCM build and capture task sequence. It imports through the wizard and gets placed into the folder in the deployment share but will not show up in the deployment workbench.

FYI: Its also a captured VM.

How to add disk partition wizard in MDT 2013?

Is it possible to add a step in a task sequence or otherwise, so the installation procedure will popup a disk partition wizard, just like when installing Windows 7 from a DVD?

Some applications are not installed by MDT

Hi!

I'm deploying Windows 7 32bit and most of my applications are installed by MDT, after the image is droped on the target machine. I found myself facing a very odd situation for which I couldn't find an explanation or solution:

- "sometimes" (and that it's a key word), when I dropped the same image using the same task sequence on the same type of hardware (lets 20-30 computers), on some machines all the applications will be installed, and on others I'll miss 1, 2 (usaully the same ones) or sometimes more and I'm not refering to the situation when the TS was interupted and it's aking you if you want to continue. The TS will finish without any error/warning messages but those apps will not be on all the machines.

Did anyone had a problem like this? Can you help me please with any information/solutions regarding it?

Thank you!

PS My MDT version is 6.1.2373.0

Visio 2013 silent install with OCT file not working properly

Hi,

In MDT 2013 I have Office Professional Plus 2013 w/SP1 configured to install silently.  This works perfectly fine.

This version of office does not come with Visio, so I have to install it separately.

I have configured Visio 2013 w/SP1 to install silently with an OCT file the same way I have for office 2013.

When I attempt to install Visio with MDT the "Change your installation of Office" dialog appears.

I have to close it manually, and then it carries on with the installation.

At the end of the install of visio MDT throws up the deployment dialog giving me an error code of 1602 which apparently means the installation failed / exited but the installation DID NOT fail, because I can open and run visio afterwards.

How do I supress this "Change your installation of Office" dialog?

In the OCT file I have supressed all dialogs and it has the default setup of removing previous installations.

Getting the Capture Screen to Show

I am trying to capture an Windows 8.1 image from a VM but the CApture screen does not appear on the wizard. I have "DoCapture=YES" but it still skips past. I have tried "SkipCapture=NO" but I get the same thing. Does anyone know how to get the wizard to show?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

installing RDS Session Host problem

just trying to create a deployment that deploys a windows 2008 r2 server, installs the RDS Session host server, installs some apps.

I am having some issues installing the role itself. I am using a script:

import-module servermanager
Add-WindowsFeature RDS-RD-Server

I add a reboot step after this. The Server reboots and the Remote Desktop Services service is stopped.

The next command i have is change /user install at which point its fails and i am thinking its because the above service is in a stopped state

If i install the role manually Server Manager it installs fine. Is there a better way to install the role?

What partition does MDT 2012 place WinRE on?

0
0

(Sorry for what is probably a simple question; didn't see a clear-cut answer when I searched this forum.)

I want to suggest that we put WinRE in our images, now that we've got MDT 2012, but we need our OS needs to be on the first partition and that partition must be named "C".  We also anticipate using the REFRESH scenario, as needed, and the preceding matches the requirements in the documentation "Verify Adequate Target Computer Resources".  However, if WinRE is added, is that placed on the first partition?  And does that "bump" the OS to a second partition?

Thank you in advance,

MDT 2013 and SMB 3.0

Hello,

I'm building an MDT environment using NAS boxes for deployment shares. The question is:

When running MDT on Server 2012 R2, would the NAS box need full support for SMB 3.0 for the deployment?

Thanks in advance
Brian.

Windows Embedded 7 Standard and MDT 2013

I have seen variables of this Question about and have viewed the video that most people have pointed to (http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/NorthAmerica/2010/WEM301) and found the modified LTIApply.wsf file elsewhere on this Forum.

While this has helped me I also have come across the issue of receiving deployment errors with MDT 2013.  I assume they are stemming from a change in the task sequence wizard.  The place in the video where the modified LTIApply.wsf is inserted is no longer there. I assume the Location has been moved to State Restore>Post-Apply Cleanup; however, I am still reciving the same errors I would without the change

Moving from WDS to MDT + WDS - Problem with computer name

0
0

We previously used just WDS to deploy our images. WDS was setup to request approval for new machines. We used the "Name and Approve" option to name the machines as we added them. If it was pre-existing, it would just use the existing computer name from AD. Then in our unattend.xml file we had Computername=%MACHINENAME%. This picked up the name we gave it during approval and set the computer name accordingly. We are now implementing MDT to manage our images and drivers. But upon testing, we noticed it would assign random computer names. I went into the Unattend.xml for the deploy task sequence and added that value under Specialize > amd64_Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup_neutral > Computername=%MACHINENAME%. But when we try applying the image, it errors out at that point of the install.

How can an MDT deployment be configured to leverage the pre-staged name?

Some additional info:

Error message during the imaging process:
Windows could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass [specialize]. The settings specified in the answer file cannot be applied. The error was detected while processing settings for component [Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup].?

Hello All,

I have successfully tested MDT image of Windows 2012 R2 on VMware and Hyper-V. This image is built on MDT server which is on Windows 2012 with ADK 8.1 and MDT is 2013.

When I run this image on HP Server BL460c G7 - I receive below error. I see the installation of Os is completed properly followed by POSTINSTALL sequence...this error is received during reboot in POSTINSTALL sequence.

I see BDD log file on C:\windows\temp\deploymentlogs\bdd.log but since I am not that expert on MDT, I am not able to find culprit while checking log file....also, not sure if I can take BDD log file from ILO console to my PC so that I can upload it here for reference..

please, anyone has any idea?

MDT 2012 - Tools folder not being copied over post OS install

0

Just started having this issue after rebuilding my 2010 DS into 2012. Using a standard task sequence, I am not doing any special with the DiskPart either. Installing to Disk 0, Partition 1. After it goes through the PostInstall phase, it is supposed to reboot and then go into Windows and continue the task sequnce. Instead, I get a message that it is unable to find the SMS Task Sequencer. The error in the log is basically, could not locate the TSMBootStrapper in the standard locations. I look in the MININT folder and the Tools folder is missing. If I manually copy the folder from the DS and manually kick-off the LiteTouch.wsf it then continues just fine.

I need help figuring out why the folder is not being copied into the MININT folder before the reboot.

This seems to only be happening on laptops. When I deploy to a desktop or a VM, the task sequence proceeds without issue.

Unable to find the sms task sequencer - MDT 2013 on Windows server 2012R2

Hello All,

I have an issue deploying Windows 7 using MDT 2013. About every 1 in 4 times the installation fails with "Unable to find the sms task sequencer". Looking at the logs it shows it can't find the tsmbootstrap.exe file that should be in the tools folder. In fact the tools folder doesn't exist in the MININT. Neither is there an X drive mapped to the deployment share which also contains the tools folder although I don't know if there should be.

If you boot into recovery mode and diskpart / clean the disk and run the deployment again it works. Its not happening on every machine and once you have manually cleaned the disk with diskpart the error does not seem to be reproducible.

The caveats are that I am installing windows to partition 3 on the drive (from reading other posts this seems to be frowned upon when using MDT but I can't really find out why) and the disks I am imaging may have old Ghost images of windows 7 or XP on them.

Anyway - any ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Multicast fails: Cannot find the file specified

I have a deployment share that works great for unicasting, and I've now tried enabling multicast in preparation for a big rollout. The namespace was created successfully in WDS, and I've made sure my switches have IGMP snooping enabled, (multicast with Ghost works), however the process always falls back to unicast.
