Inject drivers - difference between selection profile and ztidrivers

$

Greetings,

I loaded the standard server task sequence in MDT 2012 (Update 1). In the PreInstall phase there is an Inject Drivers step which allows me to select a Selection profile. In the PostInstall phase, there is an Inject Drivers step, but this doesnt allow me to select a profile - it calls ztidrivers.wsf. Why do these two steps with the same name do different things? Can I delete the postinstall ztidrivers and add a proper Inject drivers step with a selection profile?

Thanks

MDT planning and configuration

I have installed virtual machine that has Server 2012, WSUS, MDT, Windows ADK, WDS installed.

I want to automate my reference image building process completely. I have found a good tutorial for this (http://www.scconfigmgr.com/2013/02/14/completely-automate-the-reference-image-creation-process/)  but I need something more. I have Windows 8, Windows 7 (Pro with few languages & Enterprise -version) installation media imported to MDT. I need to build a clean reference image for each operating system media. What would be the best way to do this? Do I need multiple deployment shares for this?

Sysprep error,"Could not determine partition to deploy to"

We are attempting to capture an image for a Dell Optiplex desktop. We set up the task sequence for sysprep and capture and we are receiving an error 7713, could not determine partition to deploy to. I have searched for an answer but have yet to find one. Looking for a little guidance in correcting this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Windows could not parse or process unattended answer file

So I did everything in preparation to deploy the image I captured.  But when I try to deploy the image I made after the disk is formatted and partitioned when the setup process takes place I get the error message Windows could not parse or process unattended answer file c:\windows\panther\unattend.xml for pass [specialize] or setting specified in the answer file does not exist.  What setting in the answer file is it missing?  I looked at a Task Sequence that I know works but I could not find any difference between the two.  I saw many other questions like this but could not find answer

Latest virtual image won't load, but works OK in Production?

Hello again gang,

Time to update my "thin / golden image" but I'm afraid something has broken or I'm missing something.  First my current image installs fine in production, it's just a little outdated.

Some history: So a few weeks ago I edited the .WIM file via imagex and made a few changes to files and folders, all really basic stuff.  I have since tested THIS newer .WIM and it's working fine.  So now all I want to do is load THAT image into my VMWARE and perform additional cleanup, updates and re-sysprep and capture that.

Sounds easy but I cannot get my VM to load this image, am I missing something??  I admit I did some maintenance to the other 4 images and HID them from view (only).   Is it a matter of unhiding? Could it be that simple?

AutoLogon Not working during 3rd Restart? first two autologon works

Hi,

I have created the Task Sequence for Windows 7 x64 using MDT 2010. Have added the step "Restart Computer" before the domain joining (using script) under State Restore. My client environment has a tool which will give change local administrator Password daily. When i run this task sequence, the autologon is not working for the 3rd restart. I have to put in the local daily password manually using the Tool. Any idea why its not working during the third logon. It kills me for long time.

I tried by disabled the 3rd Restart, the image is completed but the machine is not joined to Domain. :(

I tried by moving the Post-Applycleanup to the end, but still i stops and waiting for the password during 3rd logon.

Let me know if you want any log files.

Which should I use; customsettings.ini or Database?

For the past 3 years with MDT I have been using customsettings.ini and am finding it's getting pretty complex to do so.  I feel I could make better use of the Database feature but can find little to no instruction on how to accomplish the same things I do with customsettings.ini. I also have several different task sequences with application bundles and such to do specific images and apps...

Here's my customsettings.ini to give you an example...  from a best practices scenario what do you folks here think?

Capture & Deployment of Windows 8 Pro on Microsoft Surface Pro

Capture & Deployment of Windows 8 Pro on Microsoft Surface Pro

Here is what i have.  I have a MDT/WDS server set up with latest patches and all task sequences configured properly.  I have tested deploying Windows 8 via a Hyper-V virtual machine and am able to deploy the OS without issue.  I have created a basic Windows PE boot disc using online instructions which boots from the Microsoft Surface Pro correctly from USB drive to a WINPE command line.

My situation is this.  The Microsoft Surface Pro does not have an ethernet port or the ability to PXE boot on it's own.  To bypass this i have created a WINPE boot disc that does work and get's to a command prompt.  I have connected a USB hub to be able to plug in both the USB drive and a USB network card.  The WINPE image does detect the network card and I am able to get an IP Address of which i can sucessfully ping the server.

What i need to find out is how can i get my WINPE to launch the MDT gui so i can capture and deploy the OS using the task sequences i have set up.  I usually just use PXE to connect to my LiteTouch images and the wizard goes from there.  I tried copying those files to the generic WINPE disc i made but i'm guessing there is more configuration necessary to get this to work.  Without being able to use PXE i'm hoping that i can use WINPE to boot up while finding the USB nic and have it find the deployment server.  I know there is a way to create a disc that does this but not sure how to go about it.

The goal start to finish would be to craft a custom image on the Microsoft Surface Pro, capture and deploy it's image using MDT, and have the ability to capture & deploy images from this unit using a USB network card and a USB boot environment.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks - Jsalisbu

Error Specified image file did not contain a resource section

I'm looking for some help here.  I'm using deployment workbench.

I have created a model custom image and created a custom wim file.  I have imported it into deployment workbench with source files in operating systems.

I have created a task sequence pointing to that operating system.  When I do properties of the task then into the OS info then edit Unattend.xml, it gives me an error of "the specified image file did not contain a resource section".

In addition, when I try to deploy this image to a computer, it fails.  I get the error:  Make sure the required files are available--setup failed to applying image\\server share...wim rc=31.  I'm wondering if this has to do with the issue above?  And not having an unattend.xml file.

I have deployed this image wim via Windows deployment services successfully.  Now I'm trying to integrate WDS with Deployment Workbench with this image wim and it fails.

Any pointers would be great.

MDT Deployment for UEFI based Computer for image more then 4 GB

Dear All,

Currently we are testing on deploying Windows 8 image to Surface Pro, HP Helix and etc (UEFI based PC).

From research, I found that UEFI based pc only able to bootup from FAT32 drives.

There is currently 2 solution for WIM files that bigger than 4GB (FAT32 Limitation). 1 is to split WIM files, another 1 is to create 2 drive which 1 for boot and 1 for deploy.

I am following the steps from here.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/askcore/archive/2013/03/20/creating-bootable-usb-drive-for-uefi-computers.aspx?CommentPosted=true#commentmessage

But i would like to know the details on how can I do the 2 drive? What folder should go to boot drive and what setting and folder should i apply on deploy drive.

Anyone here tested and working?  Please help.

MDT 2012 update media content cause bluescreen

windows server 2008 standard with SP2, MDT 2012 update 1, my problem is that whenever I do update medica content, it causes my server bluescreen 0x44. This is my new install MDT 2012, this server also has Symantec Endpoint Protection and WSUS, I hope those apps won't cause an issue.

Anyone has a fix for this? Thanks.

MDT questions

I have multiple different preinstallations and I want to handle them with MDT. These installations are using different operating systems (windows 7 pro, enterprise, Windows 8 enterprise etc.) and all of them are having different MAK-keys, local admin passwords and some other settings. Atm I have multiple deployment shares and it works, but it's hard to manage and maintain. Now I have imported OS files, drivers etc. to all deployment shares.

Can this be done with single deployment share somehow?

Hello,

is it possible to deploy apps for a running OS with MDT without SC Configuration Manager?

Thanks.

Deploy custom WIM with MDT without OOBE?

$

Short-form question: How do I deploy a custom WIM image using MDT without first boot going to OOBE?

Current process/background: A reference computer is Sysprep'd, an image is captured, I import the image into MDT, and I create a task sequence to deploy the image with included Windows Updates and applications. After deploying it, it boots to OOBE. I want it to boot to the Administrator account with the MDT summary window, just like it does after I deploy a thin image.

Do I need to change something when I use Sysprep? Do I need to change the unattend.xml or the task sequence options in MDT? Or is this just something that cannot be done with a custom WIM?

Thanks in advance!

LiteTouchPE_x64.wim - Long Download

$

Hello,

This week, our school went through a major network overhaul. All our old network technology, replaced with new cisco equipment.

Before this overhaul, we were able to deploy multiple units from Windows Server 2008r2. After the LAN boot it took less than 5 minutes to download the .wim file.

Right now, however, the image is taking hours to download. We are using the same exact computers as we were last week but now it is taking forever!

Any suggestions/solutions will be much appreciated.

MDT 2012 update1 machines are not part of the domain USMT

$

Hello all

My current environment consists of windows 7 and xp machines. All machines at this point are *not* part of the domain, and all users log into the machine as "user" they are not logging into the domain. All users do have AD accounts, and they use Citrix to access 95% of all applications. I want to use MDT 2012 using the "Lite-touch" deployment method using USB drives. I basically want to copy the image to a bootable USB drive, pop it into the workstation and upgrade the workstation to windows 7 enterprise. My question is how does USMT work if the machine is currently not part of domain? I need to copy the users data that's currently stored under the "user" on the local machine to the AD domain account.

Example

user logs into local workstation that's not part of the domain as "user". As part of the OS refresh process I need to reimage the machine, join it to the domain, then as part of the USMT process copy all data from the user profile to the users AD account.

is this possible to do, using the ADMT and USMT tools?

What exclusions do I need to use DFS-R to sync deployment shares?

$

I would much rather use DFS-R for replication due to its bandwidth savings over using linked deployment shares.  That said, I'm assuming that I need exclusions.  Right now, I *think* the \Control\settings.xml file needs to be unique per share. Is that correct?  And if so, are there any other files that should be excluded?

Installation runs extremly slow at step Install Operating System

Hi,

My deployments run fine until they reach about 23-28% and then they suddenly starts going dead slow. As the log indicates, they run slower and slower. I have tried deploy both to psychical and virtual computers. I have also tried with several different task sequences with different operating systems without any luck. The server is running Windows Server 2012 with MDT 2012 Update 1.

Have anyone seen this before?

UpdateExit.vbs Doesn't run the STAGE WIM - trying to do a customization in the UpdateExit.vbs during WIM regeneration (MDT 2012 U1).

Hi,

I'M trying do to a customisation to the WIM file that MDT generate when doing a "Update DeploymentShare" command.  I know I read on Michaeul Niheaus Blog that we can use the file UpdateExit.vbs to add stuff during the Stage "WIM".  Unfortunately, it doesn't go in that phase at all !  I did put the Wscript.Quit 1 at the End so I have the output of the script in the Update Depl.Share Status window.  I can see all other STAGE except the one I need !!

Anyone have a solution to that ?
